Subject: Male numbness..... for 24+ hrs?
Yesterday was the first day I took my road bike out of my neighborhood and on a ride for over 30 minutes. I have ridden my mountain bike on longer rides before and have experienced the occasional numbness in the male extremeties, but it was very short lived.

However, after yesterday's ride I noticed I was completely numb. A little odd, but nothing to worry about. The problem is I am STILL having some numbness today, almost 24 hrs after my ride. Not completely numb mind you, but still having any numbness down there is concerning me.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? I do wear bike shorts with adequate padding and am riding on what looks like the stock Trek seat (bought the bike used). When can expect this to go away?

Get with your local bike shop. You're going to have to work on position, saddle and shorts. Some combo of those will give you better results. You should not get numbness or not get it for more than a couple minutes at most.

Believe it or not it might be an issue of too much padding. That's just something to think about.

Been there, but not for more than a half hour or so after a ride, including my longest ride.

It could be the type of saddle, the tilt, the way you are seated, You could try a proper fit to make sure that you are seated correctly on the saddle, then you could try some different saddle designs.

Best of luck.

Every time I read about this subject I laugh when I remeber Bear's reply to someone who said this was 'normal'.  Bear wrote, "This is NOT normal numb nuts....."

Funniest reply I think I ever read on BT!

Sorry, I know this is no help....all I can say is, something ain't right.

In addition to position (which is probably the root cause), do you get out of the saddle at all while riding?  I have found that about every 20-30 minutes of riding, I get up out of the saddle for 10-15 seconds and allow some renewed blood flow to circulate down south.  It aids in fending off the dead wood experience.  Good luck!

LMAO at the "numb nuts" comments... how appropriate!  Definitely not normal!

Don't worry about it.  A few more days, it should just fall off by itself.

OK.  I don't think it's anything to panic about yet...

My stuff went numb and stayed that way for a couple weeks after my IM.  But it DID go away.  I read that it happens, but it's not 'good'...

What worries me a little more for you, is that it was only after 30 minutes or riding.  You REALLY need to look at your setup/seat position...

Some damage happened and you will heal.  But it's something you don't want to keep doing.  No need to go to the ER, but if it doesn't go away soon, a visit to your doc is in order.

Seriously, drop that kinda nugget and then run... don't be skeered!  Just ask!  It just might make for cheap entertainment anyway!

LOL agreed. I check my junk for numbness every 11.75 seconds just in case.

Okay - where does your junk go?  I never figured that out.  I know where I sit (albeit slightly more forward than I should) but how can you sit comfortably when all your "stuff" is up front?  What about in aero?

There.  I said it.  I've been wondering for years - and now it's out there.  I'm only slightly embarrassed...

If it's any consolation the ergonomics of how girls can sit on the bike saddle for long periods baffles me.

I'll let someone more experienced try and explain how it works for the guys.

hhahaha love it.

ok true answer. i sit far enough forwar on my seat that the junk is off the front of the saddle, ie i sit on the front 2in or so. if i slide further back i am rolled back enough that its on top ok. sometimes have to slide stuff to the side....

OK, for everyone who is wondering how the other gender manages the saddle, I have a suggestion.  Join a Naked Bike Ride. Then when you are caught looking, explain that you are just trying to understand the mechanics of how/where people manage the saddle with their respective "bits".  Really, it's all just in the name of research!

Niiiiice!  That would just about clarify that question... and then some!  Okay, so I have seen (not actually of course - suuuuure he says!) the naked runs, and now the naked bike rides...mix in a skinny dip and you have a totally new phenomon... nekkid tri's!  Anyone?

Back to her question (reality) ~ yes, the bike shorts and a quick adjustment to lift the boys up and out of the way and we're good to go!  Ride on!

Way to be brave and ask the tough question! Cool

If you really are looking, I think there is one, somewhere on the East coast.  I know they have a link on ST, but I think someone on BT has even done it.  Or at least a nekid run.  JeepFleeb maybe?

ETA: somebody beat me to it.

Last year at Steelhead I wound up getting my winky wrapped tied up in my drawstring.  I was so excited about the race that I didn't realize it until things went numb about 25 miles into it.  Thank god I figured it out or it could have been really bad had I gone to the end.  Seriously!  I'll try not to let that happen again.  Hope things get better, I imagine you will get used to your seat and position on the bike so that doesn't continue to happen for yo.

Hey..I did my first ever 50km ride on Sunday and had the same problem..it's Monday morning here and still a little numb..

I guess with this being my last week before my first sprint next Saturday...I won't be doing many long ride...but I will have to get it looked at....

I was wearing full padded bike knicks...might try next long ride in tri shorts...
