Extreme Veteran 464 Louisville, KY | Subject: How bad are diet cokes? First off, I am not and never have been a coffee drinker. How you people get that stuff down is beyond me. Weird though, I love the smell. I am a total zombie in the morning until after I have that shot of caffeine. On the upside, it used to be a regular coke (gasp). Now it is just a diet coke. I try very hard to limit it to one in the morning, although occasionally, another in the afternoon when I hit that mid afternoon I can't push any further, falling asleep wall. How bad is this really? If it is? Does anyone have any alternatives? I try very hard to get as much water in there during the day also. I'm one of those people that just always has to have something to drink in their hands. HELP. |

Elite 3395 Raleigh | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I'm with you M-Shell, except I don't like the smell of coffee. I have never even had a sip. I drink diet pepsi vanilla. About 2/day. One in the AM on my way to work. I have stopped from time to time and have never suffered any adverse withdrawl reactions. I know sodas are a diuretic, but I have never had a problem that way either. I try to drink a lot of water every day. I would like to hear other's responses too. |

I saw that they have some caffeine in those as well. The peach is goooooood! |

Master 1609 Gold Coast Australia. | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? It sounds to me you have low blood sugar issue during the day and caffeine is a good cover up, but I would rather look at other ways to lavel it. With proper, well spread diet you shouldn't have any serious lows during the day. In my case I tend to eat something easily digestable between the meals (like bread with a bit of cheese) every 2hrs or so. And while I love 2 cups of coffee in the morning - it's just for the taste of it. |

Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? Two issues here - caffeine and diet soda. Sort of related, but not necessarily. I don't drink either for various health reasons. Coffee makes me violently ill with the level of caffeine it contains, so I've never been addicted to it (since I can't drink it). And diet soda tastes nasty plus, it's made with artificial sweeteners. No one has quite ruled on caffeine and artificial sweeteners as being 100% safe or not; caffeine is even touted to have some health benefits, including benefits in endurance training. So I guess it depends what you think about those issues. Personally, I can get through the day without "needing" caffeine, so it IS possible (though no one seems to believe me ). You could switch to any variety or blend of black tea, and to an extent, green/white tea (green has less caffeine than black). I actually drink a lot of tea, though not for the caffeine benefits, and I drink mostly herbal, which are caffeine-free by nature. There are lots of tasty ones, many of which make great iced tea, and you don't even need to sweeten some of them. |

Master 2946 Centennial, CO | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I was in the same boat, except I used to drink 4-5 regular cokes per day. Now I drink 1 maybe 2 diet cokes throughout the day. Usually like you just one in the morning. It can last me until 10:00 or 11:00 (I get in at 5:00am). While diet coke might not be the best for you, it is certainly better than regular soda. So I wouldn't worry about it in small amounts like what you are drinking. Just my $.02. |

Extreme Veteran 464 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I might try adding a little tea in there as wurkit girl suggested. I have cut waaaaay back. Used to be regular cokes, several a day. I then gave those up for diet, and only have a couple now, would like to eliminate completely from my diet. If only I could figure out a way to wake up in the a.m. I think I could do it. |

Master 1718 Loughborough, England | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? Don't forget it is not just the chemicals and additives that are included in coke and diet coke. Carbonated drinks have been shown to reduce bone density which in turn increases the risk of fractures. Given that runners/triathletes are far more likely to get stress fractures anyway I try to limit the amount of carbonated drinks that I consume for this reason alone. I probably don't even have one carbonated drink a week now. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Bainbridge Island, Washington | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I'm in the same boat - HATE HATE HATE coffee! Blech! Nastiness!!! But, I do drink one diet coke a day (only during the week though, at lunch). Just seems so trivial - one per day if that's the only caffiene I get? Those Crystal light thingys are good, but the chemical additives seem to make them just as bad if not worse than a diet coke. Seems like all we'd be left with is water, which I drink all day too, but at lunch I want a little flavor and something different. Really, how bad can one be? |

Expert 925 Timmins, ON. Canada | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I used to drink lots of diet pepsi, mostly at work, but up to 3-5 cans an 8 hour shift. I have pretty much kicked the 'can' on that habit but still drink coffee. A fair amount too, which I need to stop. What about the things I am reading about your body being tricked by drinking an artificial sweetener...that worries me a little and was enough to turn me off diet/any kind of pop, well actually I have the odd ginger ale. This carbonated beverage/bone density thing upsets me though because I love carbonated water and figured it was much the same as drinking normal water. I will have to look into this. Is water the only good thing to drink?....maybe it is, we survived on it alone for millions of years...along with every other life form on earth. |

Extreme Veteran 502 Mayville, Wi | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? i can't handle diet sodas, and never could - health risks (or perceived health risks) aside, nutrasweet (aspartame), splenda (sucralose), acesulfame K, and other chemically manufactured sweeteners leave a horrible taste in my mouth that doesn't go away for hours, and they give my wife migraines. The "Good Earth Decaf White Tea Vanilla Blend" is also VERY good. |

Master 1548 Perth, Australia | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I just steer clear of soda, especially diet ones, its all just chemicals in a plastic bottle! Bleh! Its possible that the reason you're getting so tired is because you're addicted to caffiene and your body is trained to expect the next hit. Why don't you try getting off caffiene completely? I find I've got much more energy and I'm much more balanced when I avoid caffiene, sugar and alcohol. Yes you'll be super tired for a few weeks and probably get some withdrawal headaches but you should feel better on the long run

Veteran 427 | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I typically have coffee in the morning, but it's not so much that I need it as it has become part of a routine. Also, my coffee is not black and it's become more of a shake...lol....3/4 coffee/ 2 hazelnut creamers / the rest skim milk. Tastes good to me! I drink an average of 4-5 diet drinks a week. I figure it's one of the few vices I have left with watching what I eat and drink 90% of the time and how much I exercise. I also like tea and will throw it into the routine every now and then. Similar to an earlier response, I also eat something every 2 hours or so. It keeps the metabolism going and the hunger at bay. It also helps with my energy, but not as much in the afternoon as in the morning. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? rnner66 - 2009-05-17 8:57 AM Seems like all we'd be left with is water YUP! Two weeks ago I eliminated coffee from my morning routine. It had come to the point where I was dependent on it. Something I am not interested in being, on anything, ever. I had headaches for 2-3 days. But now, I am sleeping better, waking up easier, and overall feel great. As for diet soda, personally I don't think there is much of anything in diet soda that should be put in our bodies. Chemicals and artificial ingredients? No thanks. If you need an idea to spruce up your water, try squeezing a lime wedge, orange wedge, or even putting some berries in your water. Water is good for you! Put good things in your body. |

I haven't given up coffee yet and I probably have a diet Coke about 2x per month but the vast majority of what I drink is water. |

I don't drink coffee, and don't have soda unless it's for my Beam mixer. Water, 100% juice, InfinIT, and an occasional Gatorade is my high. |

Elite 3490 Toledo, Ohio | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I seem to remember reading an article about how diet sodas trick your body into thinking you're lacking sugar, fat, calories or something that makes you want to eat/drink more foods on the 'bad list'. In other words, you think you're saving calories by drinking diet but later in the day you're craving worse things as a by-product. |

26 | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? Well, you can also add Propel mix to your water. i love water with lemon. It's a great taste. There are times when I will still have a coke or diet coke, but know what the coke is doing to my body: carbonation, etc... with a coke, you can flush a clogged up sink! It does work and that's what is happening to the body. Try to drink other things if water gets a bit boring. Moderation is key too. I would rather have a glass of wine or a piece of chocolate then a soda,, but trying to limit those too so I can be more focused with my training and weight loss. Take it day by day. see if caffeine is the issue or mental, which another person said. |

Extreme Veteran 785 Indiana | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? I Don't know if this helps but we stopped keeping sodas in the house period. We have two children ages 9 and 11 and made it a point not to let them have it except for special occasions, like if we go out to dinner. By doing this my wife and I stopped wanting it all the time. We turned to drinking iced Green tea, very lightly sweetened. We truly don't miss it! |

Master 2477 Oceanside, California | Subject: RE: How bad are diet cokes? Here are my soda alternatives. (more than one diet soda in a few days, and I get headaches). - Seltzer with lemon/lime. - Arnold Palmers (1/2 tea, 1/2 lemonade) When I am watching calories it is more like 80/20. - Occasional Vitamin Water - Fruit juice spritzer 1/3 juice, 2/3 seltzer. I live in the desert, so I am always craving water. |
