what's the rules on this in a USAT race? Say you had a bike problem that you could not fix and had to walk your bike. Or say you came to a hill that you just did not have it in you to climb so you walked it. What would be done about it?

I ask this because in my HIM training I have done some very hilly rides and after 30+ miles of hills I have had some I just did not have it left in me to do it again so I walked them. Also I got to thinking "what if I was a mile out from the bike end and I broke something that I could not fix right there"? Sure depending on the race I could wait for the SAG van but that could be a lot longer then walking a mile with the bike. So would I have to wait or walk and face a DQ?

It's legal.  It hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood), but I've heard stories of people who have had to walk their bike into transition and still go out and finish the run.  And a lot of people will walk their bike on hard hills.

You can walk alongside it or carry it - both are legal. You are certainly welcome to walk up a steep hill if you choose, and, quite frankly, it might make sense to do so on a long course if you are not at the top of your AG. The Xterra and cyclocross crowds routinely carry their bike for efficiency rather than ride over the really rough terrain.

in the midst of a half ironman, i got a flat on my new tubular tires. i could not, for the life of me, remember how to change them. i sat there and goofed around and just couldnt get it......

i had 10 miles to go, so i started run/walking cause i knew i might at least make the cut off time....

saftey vehicles showed up, and asked if i was ok..........said yup, i just cant think right now, so i am going to run till i remember what to do...;-).....they got on the walkie talkie and called up a police motorcycle escort.............

so that went on for a whle till the head ref shows up on the back of a motorcycle.......

head ref asks me waht the heck i am doing/what is the problem........i tell him, he laughs, he's an experienced triathlete, he knows the "no outside help rule" and discusses that with me.....

sooooo, he turns his back to me and starts talking out LOUD with his back to me and basically explains what to do.....

i was back up and running................no penalty, no dq and actually placed in my division...

There's a famous example of a guy in the 2005 Kona Ironman who crashed with around 10 miles left on the bike course. He put his wrecked bike on his shoulder and walked, in his socks, the 10+ miles to T2, then ran the marathon.

So, yeah, it's legal.

As long as you keep your bike with you (push or carry) and don't impede other cyclists, you can walk/run as much as you want.

I think if you take mechanical assistance from SAG ("unauthorized assistance") you're subject to penalty, and if you accept a ride you're done.

I saw a dude at Alcatraz walking with his bike...he had no chain.  Lucky for him he had toe cages and was wearing running shoes!

He eventually passed me on the run...probably because he was able to coast down the big hill and go quite a ways towards transition.

----well let me continue..... :-) because what the head ref said, had me laughing still to this day...

so i have the tubulars glued on to the rim..............all of which were expensive and i paid for, so i was in that debate of being confused, more or less knowing that i somehow needed to get the tire off the rim BUT not wanting to ruin my wheels by doing it wrong. i had forgotten what they told me to do in the bike shop and i was using a tire tool to try to get the tire off....

i explain all that to the head ref.........he turns his back and says.....and i do quote:

"stop being a mother f$^Y^ing little girl, grab that tire with two hands and rip that mother f#%ker off that god damn wheel"..........

sweat in my eyes and laughing, i gripped and ripped.......got it off.......

i had tools every where on the road and in the grass and i reached back and sat the sticky glue rim in the grass and it picked up about a pound of grass that is now stuck all over the wheel.......

the head ref turns back around and looks and goes "aahhhhhh you f#$%ked that all up"....

i am still laughing.......

long story short, i get the new tire back on with this "hay stack" of grass sticking out from the sides of the tire..............so much for "aerodynamic" at this point.....

he's laughing....i'm laughing........the support team and cop is laughing.......

head ref yells as i roll on.................."just freakin ride it off!"......

and i did......after the final 10 miles i just had a well trimmed "lawn" hanging off the side of the tires...:-)...

Good for you!.

After watching Kona last year, when Chrissie W. had her flat and no CO2 cartridge and the other rider gave her one. Isn't that outside help? I would do the same thing (and have) but outside help is outside help.

Not sure how you interpret that in that way. I'm under the understanding that assistance from a fellow competitor is no different than assistance from a spectator or coach.
