Subject: Realistic goal, or set up for defeat?
Here’s my story – facts/figures/specs, etc.

I did a few sprints back in ’07. Basically relapsed in ’08 to the couch potato lifestyle. Starting exercising again in Dec of 08. I have sprints coming up in July and August. I’ve just completed the 16 week 2X balanced program, and am in pretty decent shape now. I’m still carrying around some extra weight at about 230 and am 5’11”. Kind of stocky/pudgy in places.

Swim – Is the least of my problems. I’m certainly not the fastest person in the water, but I’m like the Energizer Bunny when it comes to swimming. I have a pretty good stroke down (at least I think so). My longest swim to date is 3000 yards. I’ve done an 750 m OWS already, and am doing a 1500 this coming weekend. I’m very confident in the water, and am also very confident that I’ll have lots of time to do nothing but improve even more between now and then.

Bike – Well, I’m no speed demon on the bike either, but I’m getting better. My longest rides until this past weekend were 22 – 24 miles or so. I did 30 miler on Saturday. To date, my total volume hasn’t really been that high, but I’m working on really getting it up there. I know I’ll have to concentrate on riding a lot between now and then, but it shouldn’t be a problem.

Run – This is where my “weakest link” really is. I’ve been fighting mild shin splints, and Plantar Fasciitis. I seem to be getting better, and have been able to run 2x/week for the past 2 – 3 weeks without the shin splints being a problem. My longest run this year is still only 5 miles so far, but seem to be getting better at doing at least 4 miles w/ no problems. I know I’ll have to put up MUCH more impressive numbers than that before being course ready on 10/10.

SOOO – with that said… Is the next 16 or so weeks enough time to ‘get there’, or is this unrealistic for me – or maybe cutting it too close? Should I give some thought to putting it off until next year, or give the ‘ol war cry and git’er done?

I know this was a long question, thanks for reading!

If you can run 5 miles at one go you are in decent enough shape to finish a sprint. Probably not podium but finish.

Why not go ahead and do it? What's holding you back? You?

I, personally, would look at a 3X balanced plan.

Sounds like a sprint should be no problem at all.  Not sure how fast your moving but it sounds like you doing it.  Are you saying you want to go longer than a sprint though?  I feel like I'm missing part of the question...

Sounds to me like you could do it tomorrow, if your goal is to finish.

I would just continue to increase bike volume and cautiously increase run volume.  Sounds like injury is your worst enemy right now, so studiously avoid it.

Just my reaction...

Recently I was listening to a TriPodcast talking about run injuries.  They talked about studies regarding run injuries and the best methods to continue your run training by simulating running.  They found in most studies that using the elliptical trainer, even after a two week break from running to allow the injury to heal, provided enough and the best run simulation to maintain run fitness over those two weeks.  I say this because it seems to me you need to deal with the question of why the run injuries?  Are you doing too much too fast?

That being said....I went from couch to Sprint Tri on an 11 week plan and did fine although the swim was a 1/4 mile not a 1/2 mile.  So in 16 weeks even taking two weeks to let your injuries heal some you should be able to finish.

Good luck and hang in there.

HAA! I looked back at it, and realized that I missed the main part of the actual question (bare with me, its Monday). My goal is to run an International distance on October 10th. 1 Mile Swim, 30 miles on the bike, and 6 mile run. That's what I'm wondering if I can be ready for....

With the right training plan and dedication, certainly.

I think ignoring over-use running injuries like you have been, is setting up for failure.  Without that caveat, you seem fine, but the injuries are not something you can just push through.  Plantar fasciitis is a tear that needs repairing, not re-tearing (which is what you do every time you run).    It will make training miserable and you probably won't be able to do the run training the justice it deserves.  Deal with that first (see a Sports Dr. or an ART Chiropractor) and then see where you're at.
