Went for a ride yesterday at 430 and my god was it hot. Does anyone else here ride in the heat or do you wake up early and do it? I have to be in to work by 630, so I am up at 530. I am not super serious and I do enjoy going out and doing things sometimes at night so waking up at 4-430 is not realistic. I feel like my riding days will just be sat and sun mornings when I dont have work. But yesterday was a bad workout...almost ralphed from the heat, the breeze was added resistance which made it tougher. Oh and I fell twice at a stop light with my new clip in pedals. Had them for two months now and have not fallen til yesterday...quite embarassing.

I did bring some cold water...but how do you guys handle the heat?

I typically ride in the afternoons and into some evenings. I bought a headlight for the bike and ride at night now too which is fun. For the heat of the day I typically just live with it and adjust my effort accordingly. i.e. not as much hill climbing or intense interval work.

I had to do a 35 mile AT interval ride yesterday afternoon. It was 107 in Fountian Hills. I went through about 4-5 bottles of fluid and 2 gels and still was crushed by the end. You just have to be VERY careful, drink a lot and moderate your pace. Unfortunately for me, I had to push for the intervals and my effort slowly got less and less as my body said no mas!

I hide in the garage, on a trainer, at 4:15 in the morning.  It's still way to hot, you are braver than I to battle the sun and wind at 4:30 in the afternoon.

Currently my long rides are the weekends when I can get out early, and I'll do my weekly stuff on the trainer. I can't take the heat either, I went yesterday for a run at 6:00pm and the heat still crushed me. I've got a Nike dri fit long sleeve on order to try, to see if that helps. If it does, I'll get a set of coolwings for the bike.

Last I heard, Paulette had other "burning" sensations to worry about...

It is ussually semi-light at 4:30 am and typically real light by the end of most morning rides - just have a light to keep those landscapers from running you over!

Afternoon rides are warmer, but if done often you do acclimate.  You can also take a spin class in an air conditioned gym.

Final option - move to Canada.

I hear the air smells like maple syrup and free healthcare all year up there.

Freeze your bottles and get a cool neck wrap.

You can get a cool neck wrap at Walmart for around $5 or so.

With the frozen bottles, put them in your jersey pockets and if really hot, one down the inside of the front of your shirt. The front of the shirt one is great.

As you get to needing more drink they will already be melted and will be cool.

You also need to back off on the intensity a little.

I did this last year while riding in the 110+ temps.

Also remember your body will get better at working in the heat as you do it. But hydration is really really important during and for hours after the ride.

I've been trying for a while now....

What does free healthcare smell like?

This is why I chose IM St. George over IMAZ. I don't wanna train for such a long event in this awful weather. If I could move somewhere cooler, I would.

for those hot rides and even when the UV is high, I like to put on the long sleeve Under Armour heat gear under my jersey, once it is wet, it turns into an evaporative.  seems to get me through the rides.
