Just curious. I have never finished last in a race, though I have been closer than I'd like to be! My first tri ever may do it for me. Laughing  Obviously, I hope not, but I'm just in it to finish when it comes right down to it.

Well my first tri ever last june I was dead last in my Age group and BOP for the overall. granted I know if 2 factors had been changed (with me not the course) I would have been MOP for my AG and probably overall (navigating on the swim and having a different bike but that is what we save our money for right!)

DFL is still always going to be greater than DNF and DNS

I finished last in the bike portion of a super sprint last fall.  I was riding a mountain bike and people were flying past me.  It was a small group so I think my overall score was 26/29.  It's not really a big deal.  I find everyone is supportive and I still got a little medal!!!  For me it's about the experience and having a benchmark to measure my own personal improvement.  I might finish dead last this weekend!  If I do I'll let you know how it feels   Have fun with your race!

but those are the races i'm proudest of. first one I did w/ no swim training on a borrowed mtn bike I passed some folks on the run but not many. Timberman 02 was hot and I lost some food on the bike and suffered from a good bonk and cramps. it was brutual but I finished sometime during the awards ceremony. I carry that medal on my keychain as a reminder

There is a local Oly that I've done two years now where I am practically last out of the water and have been second to last in my AG (last year) and last (this year, 3/3).  I'm rethinking if I should do that race ever again!  Sometimes I'm way further up in the standings, though, it really varies.  It can get a lonely at the back, though   Good luck!

No I never have.  But I have a feeling that will change tonight as I am planning on completing an aquaman event (1-mile swim, 5k run).  Pretty low key...maybe 30-40 participants.  I am pretty certain that I will be the last one out of the water.  I just want to get the open water workout so no worries.

DFL > DNF > DNS > doesn't even try.

No, I've never finished DFL in any race.  I usually have dropped out before then as it would mean I was seriously f'ed up (injury, sickness).

But there is absolutely NO shame in finishing last.  And if someone holds it up over another's head, they shouldn't be in the sport.

in my first Tri, I was last in my age group, but I was not last in the over all men's field in any of the events.  I set a goal to 1. finish, and 2. make it in under 2hrs, 30 minutes.

It was my first open water swim, and I did swallow half the lake, but I did very well on the bike, but left not much for the run.

Where I live we have no hills, the largest is a speed bump.  The area where the race was was mostly up and down, with a couple of climbs on the bike couse of around .5 to 1 mile in length.

I lost a bunch of time in transition, but it gave me a chance to settle down, and so it gave me a lot of room for improvement on the next one....

In my first tri I finished last in my AG (F 20-24) but not overall.  I did not realize that my crappy $40 wet suit wasn't made for speed.  Tongue out  I finished the race, and I've gotten better with every race.  My most recent finish earned me 1st in Athena and 6th overall.  Smile

My first Oly was 4 years ago almost to the day. I was DFL. Actually one of the race organizers (also participated) was a mulitple IM finisher and stayed with me until I finished and he insisted finishing behind me. It was really inspirtational.

I came from years on the couch, ex-smoker. I was undertrained because I didn't really know how to train. It was still a major accomplishment considering I couldn't run arount the block a few months before the event.

In my first 3 tris I was one away from finishing DFL.  At first I felt pretty bad about it but then I thought out of all the other AGers that could've done the race in San Diego, I was 1 of the 40+ AGers that choose to get up before 5am and do something healthy in my life.  The other point that made me appreciate finishing almost DFL is that I get my moneys worth out of the race.  If I pay $65 for registration and I finish in a hour, I'm paying a dollar a minute.  Now when I finish around 1:40 I spend a lot less per minute.  So with that being said, I don't like wasting money and I like getting my moneys worth out of things, and I get to enjoy the course a little more.  Don't get me wrong I wouldlove to finish in the MOP, but for the time being I'll enjoy my time in the BOP.  You get better pictures anyway, I've never had another person in my picture that the photographer took of me at a race.  Allows for some good pictures.Wink

My 2 cents.

Came in 2nd to last out of the water in the NYC Tri a couple of years ago (and trailing the pack by a good distance).  Felt pretty good that I finished MOP overall, though - made up a lot on the bike and run.

I'm a slow runner, but not the slowest, and getting faster.  For me the sport is all about self-improvement.  See what I did last time, try to go faster the next time.  If I'm first, last, or somewhere in the middle, whatever.  Don't sweat the position (good, bad or otherwise), because that totally depends on who else shows up for the race, right?  If you do your best, and you keep trying to improve, you have to be satisfied with the effort.

I finished last on the run at my first tri (in June this year). I was last in my age group (40-44) but not last overall (3rd to last I think). I didn't really care because my goal was to finish and I did. Hey at least I'm doing something, I know a lot of people my age that don't do anything and are not healthy. I'm proud to say that I did a triathlon and finished

I've never been DFL before...but I've also never done a tri before.

I know I'm gonna be DFL on my swim (I'm averaging about 3:45/100 right now).

I was considering embroidering "DFL>DNF>>DNS" on the back of my sports bra :-p

Have completed four Tri's.  Dead last in the swim on one of my Tri's.  Last in my AG in two of my Tri's.  On the opposite end I have two 3rd place AG placings (and yes there were more than 3 in my AG!).

I was DFL of my age group in my first Olympic distance. But I FINISHED.

It took about a day or so to let go the ego and be pleased that I finished at all.

I was DFL in the swim one time. Had a whole flotilla to escort me to shore, and then a crowd to cheer for only me as I came out of the water. No problems finding my bike, either. It did feel a little squirrely on the bike to have the SAG wagon right behind me, but ended up passing a couple of people on the bike later.

At the Chattanooga Waterfront triathlon last Sunday, they had a "designated" last place finisher who followed the final people from beginning to end so none of the participants would finish last. It was kind of cool.

I'm always BOP .. and finished DFL in an off-road trail run a few years ago ... I was soooooo naive - thought "Trail Run" meant nice chip trails - wrong! Trail run really means off-roading thru the bushes, up a mountain then back down again.
I was so undertrained. I did the 6K course, and was finishing around the same time as the guys that did the 10K course.

I'm totally cool with it - for me it's a huge accomplishment to just get out there and get it done! I don't care how fast I am ... I work as hard as I can, I do my best, and I finish, and for me that means I won.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I would kinda feel bad if they hired someone to be slower than me.  I mean, I know I'm slow, I've accepted it...you don't need to pay someone to be slower than me!!! (maybe they weren't paid - I guess I'm just saying I'm OK being DFL - just as long as I'm not DNF, I don't actually care)

Yes.  My first tri. DFL in my age group (Clydedale) and 2nd from the bottom overall. I was OK for the swim & bike but the run( or should I say shuffle) was horrendous !!

But I finished and I'm planning on another in Sept.

I'm always surprised that I'm not DFL in the swim as slow as I am, but luckily for me, unluckily for them, there are always a few people whose 1st OWS is the race and I manage to finish before them.

I finished WORSE than DFL on the swim part of my first triathlon.  In the 2007 Austin Triathlon I came out of the water for the Oly distance in 49:24.  When the 40-44 AG swims results came out I was listed as 100 out of 99 triathletes.  That's right!  My swim was so bad that they didn't think that DFL was appropriate.  Up until that point I was only worried about being DFL.
