Subject: If you wear glasses, how do you find them?

How do you cope with the swim portion?  Is there a table?  Do you keep them at your bike?  Any other tips?

My vision is about 20/100.  I can function, but not good enough to go without.  Not bad enough that I have felt the need for prescription goggles, but maybe I should.  Contacts are not an option due to previous eye surgery and severe astigmatism.

I went ahead and got contacts, but before then, I did get a pair of aquagoggles (aquagoggles.com).  They have lens that partially mimic your prescription, and are probably good enough for you to locate your glasses.  I kept my glasses in a hard case inside my bike shoe.

get contact lenses my friend.  Never had an issue with them in a race.  I keep a set of sports glasses in my transition bag just incase however.  You can get goggles with perscription lenses too.

If you can function without them, just keep them at your bike in a very specific spot so they're easy to find.

If it's a big enough problem that you're worrying about it now, maybe prescription goggles aren't a bad idea.  They're surprisingly inexpensive (I think I paid $20) and work great.

I wear the optical goggles from Speedo.  Cost about $20.  While I can swim fine with regular goggles, finding the buoys in open water is much easier with the opticals.

You won't find a glasses table at most triathlons.  You can run with the optical goggles on all the way to your bike, but I usually don't.  I normally just scope out the transition area well before the race so I know which row my bike is in without having to think much other than counting rows.  I often have a problem finding my bike in my row, though I'm not sure that has much to do with poor eyesight (just lots of bikes).  I bought some blue tires this year; maybe that will help.

I have prescription sunglasses that I leave in my helmet in T1.

I wear contacts in a race but I do own Speedo optical googles that were previously mentioned. I thought they were pretty cheap from swimoutlet.com. It might help.

I have very few patient that are not able to wear contact lenses even post-surgical and high astigmatism. I would talk with your optometrist about what you want to achieve with the contact lenses. Your vision may not be 20/20 with the contacts, but you should be able to ride and run safely with 20/40 vision or better.

Corrective goggles are a must for me, just to find my way around the transition area and to the swim. I was surprised at how cheap they were.

I may consider getting contacts as then I could probably keep my head down more for the bike (now if I put it down too much I am looking over my glasses and can't see).

They're not exactly prescription, but close enough.  You probably shouldn't read or drive with them, but excellent for pool swimming (I can recognize faces and see the time clock!) and triathlons.  More details here:

In the swim portion, I generally follow the crowd.  If you can catch a draft off someone about the same speed as you, sighting becomes that much easier.  You pretty much don't need to see much beyond the next buoy anyway.  If you are absolute FOP or BOP, then the swim might get a bit trickier.

As far as where I leave my glasses in T1, I just set them in a case in my helmet.  Takes a couple seconds to get them out and put them on -- no big deal.  Just note any landmarks next to your rack (bathrooms, etc) ahead of time to make finding your rack easier after you exit the water.

One thing I learned about ordering goggles, is not all of them have + corrections available (for farsightedness).  I contacted aquasphere, and they recommended Hilco.

My husband wears the speedo corrective goggles and says he can see really well with them and just keeps them on until transition.

Some races have glasses table after you exit the water, check with your race director.

One of our daughter's has very bad vision and the corrective goggles don't help with her prescription so we find a way to get her glasses. Often the race director will let us hold them and hand them to her after she gets out of the water. Other times she puts them in her helmet.

She wrote an essay about triathlons and the big issue for her was finding her glasses...it was very informational for me as I never knew what a hassle and concern it was of hers.

I have some of the near-prescription goggles now but before I got them it was sometimes a challenge. I can't see well enough to recognize faces more than a few feet away but I could find my way to the bike and kept my glasses there, in the helmet. The only time I've seen a table for glasses was at IMC so, in my experience, they're rare.
