I posted this on NAMC club website but for those of you that are not members:
At the beginning of tonite's Roswell Ride it began raining.  We all decided to HTFU Yell and left on the ride anyways.  The group was going slowly and being very careful.  Karen was out front (as usual for this speed demon).  Unfortunately when we were heading down (I think) Coleman Road which is very steep and where you must stop and turn left in front of the daycare center (the road it is scary to stop and turn on in dry conditions) - Karen's bike slid out from under her and she went down hard.    She went to N. Fulton hospital via ambulance thanks to a major bump to the head (helmet did it's job and I am sure it saved her life) where they checked her out thouroughly and sent her home.  No broken bones and  lots of road rash.

And just so you know what is important to Karen 26.2 she called me on the way home and wanted to know that her Garmin was safe!  She also asked me to tell everyone how much she appreciated all the concern and care we gave her.  As if we would have it any other way!

So glad you're ok Karen!

Aw crap, Karen you're not allowed to crash!  Did your wheels get on the paint in the road?  That stuff's the evil spawn of satan when wet...

Regardless, glad you're ok and VERY GLAD you wear that helmet!  Yet another reminder that anything can happen on these rides.

(I admit, the threat of rain made me chicken out of joining.  Kept thinking I don't have anything big to train for right now, so no reason to HTFU.)

Thank you for this update, Lisa.  Went to bed wondering about her condition and hopeful that she was OK; really glad to learn that all is (reasonably) well.

Update
Just talked to Karen's husband and he said she had a good night.  He had to talk her out of going to work this morning!

Turns out her doctor last night was the LTF swim coach Susan's husband which was good cause he was very understanding.  She is not allowed to bike for two weeks just in case she would fall again.  But she is allowed to swim and run as she feels ready.

Again, so thankful you're OK Karen!

I'm so glad she is okay!  That was really scary but it really demonstrated the importance of a good helmet.  Glad to know they do their job.

Karen, I hope you feel better soon! (I'm sure you're still hurting).

We're definitely not going to be riding in the rain again.

Lisa,
Thank you for the update on Karen.  After seeing the crash just in front of me, I know that everyone on the ride was very concerned last evening and relieved to hear that she was up and around at the hospital last evening with no bones broken.

After the crash, while Karen was on the ground, and we were trying to determine if she had any serious injuries, one of the first things Karen said is "How is my Bike?"
For some of us, it's all about the bike... "Karen the bike is ok, but how are you???"

Karen,
I hope your road rash heals quickly and look forward to trying my best in a futile effort to stay with you again on the flats down Riverside in a few weeks.
Congratulations on your big win in the Velogames TdF Fantasy League!

Justin

x2 - though rain is definitely not optimal conditions, you simply need to be more careful...several years ago I rode the annual Six Gap/Three Gaps ride and it started pouring at mile 5...climbing in the rain was definitely not an issue, but descending Neels and Wolfpen was not fun, esp. with so many other people around.  However, keeping the brakes covered allowed for controlled descents and all turned out well.  And halfway to Woody, the rain stopped and the sun started peaking out...turned out to be a great day.

I'm so glad to hear you're OK. That helmet (and the pieces of it we picked up off the road) can retire sure in the knowledge that it gave it's all fullfilling it's purpose in life!

Karen I am sorry to hear that you crashed, but I am glad that you are OK. There is a saying in cycling "There are those that have crashed and those that will crash". Think of it this way...you have yours out of the way now!

To echo Lisa, you can't control the weather on race day so you really should ride in the rain (within reason of course).

Heal well, Karen! While sticking to your sheets is no fun ... the road rash goes away quicker than you would otherwise think!

Hang the helmet on teh garage wall as a reminder of how important those things are.

Wow, feel better. Lots of tegederm for the road rash.

On the whole riding in the rain thing, I avoid it mostly because it will really wreak havoc on your bike and it's components. If I get stuck in an unexpected storm or in a race, so be it but I did a mountain bike race in a downpour and it cost me $130 in repairs afterwards. Expensive race.

... sounds like we could have a whole thread on riding in the rain.  I try to avoid it because I am so sweet that I am afraid I may melt.

BTW, I spoke to Karen during lunch today and she was at all3sports getting her bike checked out.  ... now there is a hardcore cyclist for you.

Hardcore cyclist - or just insane!

Thank you all for the kind words and thoughts.  And thank you to everyone that stayed around to help me while, as Lisa puts it, I was lying in a heep.  I don't remember anything, except all of a sudden being at the hospital.  But the paramedic said I was talking to him, so of course I told him I most certainly was not!

Thanks to Lisa & Steph for coming to the hospital to check on me.  That whole time frame is a blur too, but I do remember you both being there and I appreciate it.

I appreciate all the posts, inspires, phone calls, etc.  You all are a great group of people and I feel lucky to have met up with each and everyone one of you.

Andy loaded my bike in my car and we took it to All3 today.  They looked it over and found just the shifter(s) needing repair.  It's going to be $99 for that, and I need a new helmet.  I have not seen the emergency room bill yet, but considering what could have happened, I think I got off cheap!

The road rash will heal, my bike will get fixed, the pain in my ribs will go away, and I will get back out there soon! Laughing
