Subject: "I fought the road and the road won"
Yesterday on my way home I crested a hill and a car suddenly stopped in front of me. I braked hard, my front wheel locked up and I flew over my handlebars. Good news is that nothing is broken; bad news is that everything hurts! I went to the urgent care place and they took some Xrays, cleaned me up, etc. They don't think my collorbone is broken but I have a separated shoulder, sprained/stiff/hurt wrist and a boatload of very attractive road rash all down my left side. I was going to get some juicy pics to share but haven't quite gotten there yet. Anyway, could have been a lot worse- helmet is fine (I hit with my shoulder, elbow and hip) and my steed seems to only have a few superficial gashes and a hurt ego. Not sure how I'll be for my next race in 10 days but we'll see.  Moral of the story: be careful!

Sorry to hear that, same thing kinda happened to me (I posted about it about 7 weeks ago) Guy just pulled out in front of me locked it up and I went over the bars. Shoulder, hands and head is the order of my impact.

Glad to hear you're okay

Cars, gravity and physics always win. Heal up quick!

BTW, did the guy stop when you went OTB and was it a sudden stop for real traffic or a malicious act?

Nah, nothing malicious- just a case of him stopping to wait for traffic and make a left turn on a road that is usually quiet. I got a fright because I wasn't expecting it and jammed on the brakes. Actually, people were awesome. They all waited for me to crawl off the road, checked that I was OK, offered to call for help, etc. The urgent care people were just as cool.

louiskie - 2009-08-06 9:14 AM  ...helmet is fine (I hit with my shoulder, elbow and hip)...

I'd recommend replacing your helmet anyhow. It's very hard to be absolutely sure you didn't smack it even if you think you only hit shoulder, elbow, hip. Once they take an impact they should be replaced.

7 weeks ago I crested a hill at full speed only to find a sign just out of view was now in my way.  I broke my jaw in 2 places and had to sit out the HIM I was training for.

When you get to the top of a hill, look around for stuff over the drop-off.

Someone wanted pics...here they are. The hip one is actually about 4 inches long, but if I zoomed out more you would have to check out my butt too! ha

No gloves...how would I get such nice road rash if I wore gloves? :-)

Thanks for all the well wishes guys- Its no fun suffering in silence; far better to spread the love :-)

Thanks man. Yeah, it wasn't overly fun. Now the road rash doesn't hurt much anymore; the shoulder and wrist are no fun though (and, more importantly, get in the way of riding again!).

well this happened to me running....yeah, sidewalks are known for attacking runners in these parts Once cleaned up, major skin peelage and bruises.
Just back from doc. No broken bones but need to rest, ice and ibuprophen. I have a tri on Sunday and he said just ice that knee like hell and should be ok.
