Has shark week on Discovery Channel got you scared?  Me....Just a tad.

I was actually wondering how many people have encountered a shark while racing or training in OW?

Saw a shark while standing in knee high water at the gulf at Anna Maria Island this May.
4-5 footer.  Scared me stiff.  Didn't tell my wife (who was in the water next to me and saw the "fish" also) until the drive home.

I was like, "Uh, ya know the only 5 foot "fish" that swim that close to shore in shallow water are sharks right?"

The look from my wife was priceless.  This was also only a few days after somebody got bit by a shark in Clearwater (which I still haven't mentioned to my wife).  Sometimes having murkey water like in the atlantic has its priveledges!

We watched as a research boat yanked a 12' shark from the water as we surfed Campus Point in Santa Barbara a few years ago

shark?  nope, never seen one

Seriously.  You have nothing to worry about.  You should worry about driving to your open water swim, much more likely to be hurt doing that than swimming.

Those hammer heads don't count.  They have handlebars to hold onto to keep them from biting you.

I used to live on an inlet of Tampa Bay.  Little black tip sharks would bump into me as I did my open water swims...

I has a race this weekend so intentially did not watch. Now I have to see if I can get through On-Demand. I did not need any additional negative thoughts in my head.

Don't worry.. I just tried to get into the water at Ocean Beach (New London) over the weekend.  Those sharks won't bite.  They are too busy huddling by a fire to keep warm.

Their little mouths were so small I doubt they would do any damage if they bit you anyway.

Remember the chances of you getting attacked by a shark are MUCH lower than you getting into a car accident on the way to the tri.  The chances are basically nil...

Logically so true - I am just convinced the shark will attack from below (like the sharks in South Africa) thinking I was the injured slow swimming seal !LOL LOL LOL - sad part is - I do not even think sharks breach in my neck of the woods? so irrational. I know.

It's nice of Discovery Channel to program Shark Week right when the annual big crop o' newbies in LA are hitting the ocean for the first time to get ready for Malibu Tri and LA Tri...

I seriously think the movie 'Jaws' scarred everyone for life.

I used to be really afraid of sharks, but after having read things on BT and read other people's accounts of shark encounters, it seems that sharks' main purpose isn't to attack humans when they have the chance. I have no solid evidence on this guess and don't have the time to research it, but it seems like if you are minding your own business and don't freak out if you see one, your chances of surviving are pretty high.

Easier said than done, I'm sure.

But why are we so scared of them? Whales are bigger, yet if I saw a whale in the water I wouldn't be scared at all. Yea, sharks have hurt people before, and they have teeth, but the teeth aren't GINORMOUS or anything...seriously, I blame 'Jaws' for everyone's trauma.

Not bad mouthing the movie though - for a movie to have such an impact it must be pretty good...

Not training, but out surfing I've seen at least a half dozen.  Mostly bulls, which are very scary to see.  Not fun to arrive at the "secret spot" only to see everyone out of the water b/c there are so many sharks roaming.  I am more worried about the sharks I don't see rather than the ones that I do.  Still scary none the less when you see one splash about 3 feet away.

oh I am pretty sure seeing a whale while swimming would freak me out - don't think I would get eaten but sure it would stop me dead in my tracks. LOL.

I agree, they are not there to eat us per say - but when swimming I think we have too much time to "think" about things -the more I OWS the better I get with my fears of being attacked by sharks or hell even the man eating catfish they have reported in some parts of the world. Its still startling to think of an encounter. Atleast for me it is.

Florida - I grew up in south Florida and we used to swim in canals after school - never any encounters with gators which I am sure where there. Yet somehow you could not get me in a canal in FL now for the life of me. Go figure.

For me, I just view most animals as being unpredictable.  I would get out of the water if I saw a large school of 'cuda, tuna, shark, jellyfish or ill-tempered sea bass.
