From mrs. alltom1:

"There's an opening for a volunteer Girls on the Run coach at Woodward Academy (and other schools, both public and private, around Atlanta) for this wonderful program centered around running/exercise and team games/discussion focused on promoting pre-teen girls' self-esteem/healthy living/healthy body image: http://www.girlsontherun.org/default.html.

The commitment is for one afternoon a week for about 12 weeks (plus one Saturday race), can do just one or both semesters a year.

Please feel free to pass this along-- this is a good resume-builder for teaching/PE students in undergrad/graduate programs."

Our daughter has done GOTR the last couple of years and we have pretty strong opinion of its value....

If there's anyone on the board interested, please PM.

x2 on the value of the program - our daughter has done GOTR the past couple of years and really enjoyed it!  hopefully her middle school schedule will allow continued participation...

I'd love to help out but as I'm a weak runner I wouldn't be much of a coach.  I'd be happy to assist someone.

It's not about the running as much as it is about helping these young gals find value in themselves through encouragement and living a healthy lifestyle through an athletic endeavor like running.  Running is simply the delivery vehicle.

Check out the GOTR site to learn more: http://www.girlsontherun.org/

Also, re specific volunteer oppts/roles, check out: http://www.girlsontherunatlanta.org/volunteer

I think I'm going to work with the program at Mt Paran.  I'm excited!!!

BTW, for those that might be interested, I worked at the actual event last year with one of the race sponsors and the girls are soooo cute!  It's a really good organization!

I'm not ready for the time committment of a coach, but I just filled out the volunteer application for one of the other opportunities. This sounds like a great organization and definately up my ally - I miss working with kids and I'm a big fan of encouraging them to get active! Thanks for posting this.

Great job, Heather - in whatever capacity, I know you'll be a big source of encouragement for the girls (and their parents)!

Way to go, Courtney!  Were you at the 5K on the really cold day last year?  I ran into Chris (alltom1) down there and saw the orange tent, but never walked over.

This is right up your alley...you'd likely have a blast, as would the kiddos.

Yes, was there.  It took me at least 5 days to defrost!!  But it was fun and the girls are sooo fun and cute!
