Subject: why drink beer?...
so i constantly hear of people always drinking beer after a workout or after a race. Why is this? do people feel the need to treat themselves to something that tastes good (cause if so, why not just drink something that isn't going to have alcohol or dehydrate you?), or is it out of celebration that they decide that it's ok to have one? It seems like people look forward to having a beer after a workout. Why? In my opinion, it's a waste, something that has no value to me. I'm not bashing people who drink by any means, it just seems to be something a lot of athletes do.....i'm just curious. What's your opinion?

Because it tastes good, plus there is evidence to suggest that it hydrates you better than water. (the amount of beer you need to drink to get dehydrated is a heck of a lot more than having a beer (or two))

I used to run with a group of Hash House Harriers (they do more than just have a beer after a run though) and discovered that a beer after a run is quite possibly the best tasting beer ever.

I did a run with HHH, once!  it was fun but once was enough!

Beer always tastes better after a hard run or bike.  Not to mention the quick buzz.

Hmm...i don't know about it hydrating you better than water... alcohol is contained in beer, as small amount as there is, it's still a diuretic so you dehydrate faster. read this article:http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-242-300--12434-0,00.htmlit has both sides of the spectrum....

That small amount of alcohol comes with a large amount of water. It doesn't dehydrate you.

So let me see if I got this right. You ask why do people enjoy a beer after a race. You then put forth your own opinion that beer isn't healthy and it's a poor choice, but your not bashing anyone. Did I get that right? You may want to title your post what you are really saying, which is "people who drink beer after a race are stupid" as you seem to have an opinion about this you want to put forth.

I love beer. I'll have a beer or two sitting by my pool on the weekends or whenever I feel like it. I like it, you don't. I'm sure there a lot of things you do that I wouldn't do, but so what. Why do you even care? You say it's a waste and has no value to you. Who cares? You are looking for people to justify something they do that you don't agree with.

Here you go found this article on where this all comes from..http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,307518,00.html Although I do rarely drink now, trying to lose lots of weight, a beer does taste damn good after a solid workout (Not often but mmmmmm). OK but with all this talk I'm going to pop a top.

"why is a tree good, why are sunsets good" "life is a garden, dig it". Beer drinkers drink beer for the same reason coffee drinkers drink coffee and swimmers swim, runners run, triathlete's.....well, you get the point. do it, cause you enjoy it. I drink beer, cause I like beer. After a run, after a race, during a football game, when doesn't matter, what does matter is that I enjoy drinking what I enjoy drinking, sometimes it is beer, sometimes it is Amino Vital. Sometimes, its chocolate milk.

I would like to see the study about the hydration, because I have always heard the opposite is true. I love beer, so for me, it's something I enjoy and it's celebratory. I am trying to lost a few pounds, so I try to limit beer, wine, or whiskey to special occasions, many of which are to celebrate athletic events or milestones. I would not have any alcohol immediately after though, I would wait an hour or two. There are a few studies that show that alcohol can impede muscle recovery when consumed shortly after a workout, so I go for some good ol' post race nutrition, then the beer laterLaughing

I was stating forth my opinion, but I was also asking other's opinions as well. That's why i posted it. I really don't care, i just want to know what other people think and why...which i now see, it tastes good. Gotta love other people's disagreements....haha. Without them the world would be boring....

Beer.  It's not just for breakfast anymore!

I suppose some people start thinking of pizza or ice cream when they are on mile 25 of a 30 mile ride (or mile 95 of 100 for some of you...), I think about beer.  Good, healthy, yummy beer.

you want my opinion?  I drink it because I like it.  It does have value to me.

No problem, it just read a little judgemental, that's all.
Beer, especially a fine ale, is wonderful stuff.

ummmm, water is not free. At least not if you mean drinking water. I suppose you could just scoop up some water from the river, but I'm not going to drink it.

People drink for the same reason kids spin around to make themselves dizzy. Humans like to be altered. Some people use alcohol to be altered, some use drugs, some use adrenaline, others endorphins, it's all feeding the same beast. Some of us like to use alcohol and endorphins in combination.

your original post made no mention of spending money, you asked why do some people have a beer after a hard workout or race, i merely provided an answer.  Water, at least here, is not free. Cheap, yes...free, no.
