Bryan and the rest of you in Phoenix, fill us in. How bad is it? Can they still swim or will they change up/cancel IMAZ?

Not in AZ but reading That Forum That Shall Not Be Named

Too soon to tell. I'd say SOMA is a maybe, IMAZ a definitely. They'd find another (swim)venue, if they had to.

Someone school me...

I have seen that lake, and know it is man made.

So, and please don't flame me if this is a stupid question, aside from letting nature refill it with rain, how would they "refill" the lake?

I can't imagine that Tempe gets a whole lot of rain in the summer

Oh, they'll fix it and have the lake filled way before IMAZ. The lake's water volume is controlled by the Salt River, so they can control the flow water volume and flow.

My concern is that there isn't another swim venue. I was messing around on Google Maps this morning and there isn't another body of water for many, many miles. Lets assume they magically fixed the dam today. This lake is manmade and sits in the middle of a desert. It could realistically take a year or more to fill back up without the help of some freak storms or something. Right now they are saying its down to 3 ft, which is about 13 feet low. Here in Houston a few years back one of our lakes got about 5 feet low and it took a year and a rainy season to get it back to normal. I bet the WTC folks are on a plane right now to AZ to try and figure out a solution.

The lake is filled by a river which is controlled by a dam. They can do conrtoled releases of water to refill the lake once they repair the dam. There are no other options for the swim unless they move the whole race up to Lake Saguaro, which is way up the BeeLine.

That would be interesting. Swim, bus shuttle to T1. T1 times will be astronomical. :D

But, they will have it filled way before then. Too much money rides on it.

If the next lake is less than 112 miles, you now have a point to point IM.  Actually might be kind of neat, as the current race is multi-loop, correct?  Some changing scenery could be fun.

Is an inflatable dam a good idea?

Well, it allows for them to release water to the easy side of the lake into the dry river bed, which they do from time to time. The rubber bladders can be deflated in a more controlled manner than this!

Can't believe I am watching a live news conference about a lake in AZ, but I am and the guy just said he expects the water to be at normal levels and back open to normal events by Nov 1st.   He specifically mentioned IMAZ.  Let's hope so.

That won't bode well for Nathans and SOMA.

Actually, with the lake being empty, it will kill all that horrible algae and dry out all the mud. When they refill it, the lake will be as claen as new!

So at the press conference they are saying 90 days to repair, 2 weeks to fill. It's going to be cutting it close for IMAZ but I bet theyget it done. I say move SOMA and Nathans up to Sagurao. I feel bad for Red Rock Co. First the Bran Burner MTB race is cancelled due to fire in Flagstaff and now this.
