Veteran  216  WICHITA FALLS, Texas |  Subject: Pinehurst Triathlon : Official ThreadHello everyone. If you're reading this I'll assume that you're heading out in a few weeks to Pinehurst. I am absolutely new here. 1st thread to be started, 1st time memeber, 1st Tri, it's been a while, and will likely be longer, before I will be 1st again! Name is Michael and I'm pushing 50, recently retired from SF after 26 years. I like to say "Broken but not dead". Anyway, I thought I'd start this up and see I could obtain any information from those of you who have run this before. After reading some of last year's comments, should I bring a cycling jacket?! Also, here's a good one, if I have a 3/2mm wetsuit, but it is not specifically made for Triathlons, can I still use it? The thickness is within USAT regs but I'm curious how out of place I'd be if I wore it rather than rent one because I don't want to spend $100+ on one right now.... Master 1741   Chapel Hill, NC | Subject: RE: Pinehurst Triathlon : Official Thread Welcome (back)! Pinehurst is a very nice venue and can be tough due to hills. I wouldn't recommend a scuba or surfing wetsuit, as it will increase your drag in the water. That will slow you down and suck the energy out of you. Might be better to just skip the wetsuit, depending on water temps. Some years this race is cool, and a cycling jacket is a good idea. I think usually it's fine without one. |

I used a trispecific suit because i', a weak swimmer and love their speed and float a suit gives me. I say no to a cycling jacket. The only thing you need on the bike course is an extra water bottle (as one gets ejected crossing a bridge) and som strong legs for the hills in the end. And the run- bring your legs again..hilly! |

Extreme Veteran 374 Hattiesburg | Subject: RE: Pinehurst Triathlon : Official Thread I went no wetsuit last year and was just fine. The mornings can be cool but you won't need a jacket for the bike. Both the bike and run course are tough, last year there was a lot of carnage on the run. Get your run in shape or you'll be walking. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time in the morning, the parking area is a little ways away from transition. Love this race! Met a good friend there!! "Hi Carol!!" |

Hopefully the running I'm doing now will help me out. I underwent nine major surgeries this past year trying to rebuild myself and although I'm don't feel that I've recovered to my full potential yet, I will enjoy the challenge the course will present. It's going to be a challenge without a doubt. Does anyone spend the night in Pinehurst or do you drive there the morning of the race? |

The Pinehurst bike route is ALL hills with no variety..nothing too steep or hard but pretty constant ;-) And the run is either up or down. Nothing steep but as you crest one hill, you go down the other side...and then up the next one, and then back down. Rinse and repeat until the dam wall where it is flat. That is 0.5 mile and then you are done :-) |

When I get back to riding, I'll likely hit that section for a good hour or so every few days. I know this is going to be hard on me but I'm ready to do it. If anyone sees me lying on the side of the road, do me a favor and kick me on the way by to make sure I'm till moving forward!! I had nine major surgeries within the past 15 months and I'm still working on getting everything operational again. I'm really looking forward to this and making some new friends! Thank you all again! |

I ride the Pinehurst bike course every Saturday...this past Saturday I hit the wall for the first time on the hills....wanted to get off my bike and throw it!!! LMAO...doubt you'll need the jacket but I will second the suggestion of an extra water bottle!!! Have a great time!  |

I wore a wetsuit that I bought at a dive shop. I'm not a strong swimmer and it was fine for me. However, I expect to be slow in the water (and didn't disappoint on that front). I agree about the bike and run course...hilly. Good that you are getting in rides with hills now. I recommend starting some bike-run bricks to get used to running after the ride, particularly with a hilly course. |

I use various terrain with lots of hills, although it isn't the same as a real bike. When I return in 11 days, then I will begin hitting one of my routes that has a good amount of hills with varying degrees of climb and descent. I am soooo looking forward to this!! |

I had switched out my seatpost for an aero that has a slight fwd lean.... BAD idea... I'll be switching it back before my next ride!!! Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!! |

I hit the gym on Tuesday and swam on Wednesday. Thursday was pure pain. BUT... it's coming around now. Still sore but I'm going to get back at it. I think the swim is going to be my worst event and I'll be very slow. Thats fine though because I'm going to have fun and to complete my first Oly. |
