Subject: Women's Dress Shirts
Dear professional women of BT:

Tell me why it is so bloody hard to find dress shirts that actually accommodate breasts, shoulders, and arms and actually look stylish, not like a big square tent?

I've done OK at Banana Republic, but apparently my sweat and their shirts don't like each other...my sweat bleaches the arm pits pink or yellow (I turned a blue shirt pink at the arm pits and at the neckline). So now I have to try something else, but where? I'm tall, 5'10, and somewhat busty, so I can either have the shirt fit in the arms and in the bust, but be massive around my torso...

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get a great shirt, off the rack? Or am I doomed to a life of having to get my shirts tailored? Why is it so hard to find shirts for us? HMMM?!?!

Check out Ann Taylor, GAP, and Limited and see if any of those fit... worth a shot.

If I remember correctly, there is SOME company (and I don't remember which one ) that sells/ sold button down shirts in bra sizes (34B, 36D, etc.) so they fit correctly around the bewbs.

good luck with your search!

(I wear a lot of button downs but am not at all busty so I don't have much of a problem!)

Same problem. I have huge shoulders and not so small melons.

Okay. Pit problems diversion--I use the prescription-strength (but over-counter) Certain Dri at nights, half the time don't even remember antiperspirant during the day, and all pit sweat and discoloration problems have desisted!

As for shirts, Limited (and associated companies) used to be able to fit my upper body, but not anymore. I've actually found decent stuff at Boutique Target. I've also become a fan of thrift stores.

Oh, don't rule out REI. They have lovely collared buttoned down women's shirts, but they are not cheap. However, you usually can work out in them, too, as they are UV-screening and dry-tech.

x2 I gave up on button downs a few years ago and I'm not even busty. They just took too long to iron, keep tucked in, not sweat in, etc. I was wearing shirts from Express - cute but not worth the hassle.

Not as tall as you - but I really like my shirts from Talbots...you can get them in no-iron, they are tapered/fitted at the waist...I like em!

Yeah, button-downs are hard to find no matter what... even harder for us tall girls!  GAP sells Tall sized clothing on their website, and I've had some luck with a couple of those blouses (longer sleeves, nicer tailoring for longer torsos), but you're right- the chest often seems to be the hardest part to gauge.  I often end up wearing button downs with a tank top underneath, and leave the top few buttons open so that the top of the tank shows... it's less formal, I guess, but it's a way to get around looking like you're about to bust through your shirt at any minute.

Ann Taylor used to have nice dress shirts. Try Talbots or Brooks Bros.

Nobody makes nice ladies' button downs anymore.

Well, I had some success. I returned a shirt to BR, and decided to suck it up and go to Nordstroms. I cruised the clearance rack and find a great shirt. Original price? $155. Paid? $45, exactly what I paid for the shirt I exchanged. Apparently, if you want a nice shirt, you have to pay a lot of cash. Bollocks.

x3 or 4?

A nice sweater and knit underneath or cardigan look very nice with dress pants or a skirt.

I can't find any button downs to fit either for all the reasons you listed.

No help finding the right shirts, but my mom showed me how to take in a dress shirt back when I was in HS.  I haven't used those skills in years, but if she could teach me, I'm sure you'd pick it up quickly.

Out of curiosity - where was your shirt manufactured?

I see you had some success, but for the future, x2 on Express.  I am short bodied, but busty (with long gorilla arms) and have had some luck with them.

Oh, and there is an answer to this question.

To increase profits, manufacturers want to spend less $$ in manufacturing costs - labor and materials. China's sales pitch is simple: 85% of the quality for 50% of the price.

Manufacturers also cut costs by using cheaper fabrics, less dense thread count. Stores are flooded with throw-away clothes; it's not as if they will withstand more than a season of wash/wear, they are so flimsy. That means you keep going back to the mall and spending money. Well designed and manufactured blouses are great, but that means we spend less every year on these shirts because they last so long and are classics.

Well designed shirts also require more labor, increasing production costs. A boxy shirt costs less to produce than a tucked/tailored shirt.

To be honest, I buy the shirt that fits my girls and then I get the rest tailored.  The shirt fits me perfectly and no one else.  I spend about $20 extra per shirt to get it tailored.  This is on the pricey side because I really prefer my tailor and have worked with them for a long time.

Otherwise, find one that fits pretty well and get rid of that gap by using double stick fabric tape.  It'll keep people from peeping in that hole that your girls are creating.

Lately though, I've been buying a lot of silk sleeveless blouses with modern prints, cuts or designs to wear under a suit.  They look crisp and well put together.

I was just going to suggest Nordstrom's -- I'm tall and skinny with a rather prodigious rack, and their in-house brand of non-wrinkle shirts is the best fit I've found. Also, they really don't wrinkle!

T.M. Lewin (http://www.tmlewin.co.uk/Womenswear.aspx/Women).  My wife buys a batch from their Jermyn street store every time she's in London.  They ship anywhere.  Proper English shirtmaker.  BTW, my wife is 5'11" and it's the rare shirt that reaches her wrists.

^^^

This.  I always have to buy the shirt to fit shoulders/arms then get it tapered for the rest of my torso.

And I totally disagree with ANN TAYLOR.  They somehow think every woman has Barbie doll arms!!!

I joke my genes were the farmers that survived the Irish potato famine so they needed strong arms to plow whatever fields were there, but honestly not every woman has arms like twigs!

Brooks Brothers and Express work the best for me.  I agree with the Ann Taylor shirts having issues with their arm sizing.  Their arms are cut too short and too small.  If it fits through the waist, I can't move my arms. Argh!

guy chiming in: get tailored/custom shirts.  I have 50 inch shoulders, 17 inch neck, 36 inch arms and 34 inch waist so off the rack is not an option for shirts or suits.  Yes, it costs more but if you are wearing them every day its justified.  not sure if that is an option for women.

I think it is never to tough for anyone to find the apparel for own choice. For Women dress shirt I have http://www.fitcustomshirts.com/

I found it really good in a way that it is giving me the facility to design my shirt and also I can completely customize my shirt.
