There was so much persistent ice I just got tired of it. I've been working on winter riding and have done about 20 degrees I think. I was surprised by how comfortable I could make that with the right gear. Again, just stymied by the ice. |

I just hate it, that's all. Dreadmill until spring, and then I'm back outdoors. I'm no fan of the treadmill either, but I get much better return on my time on it compared to dressing up & stumbling around out in the dark & miserable cold. Winters here are rough, but it makes me appreciate spring all the more  Cheers, Chris |

You seem like a really nice guy and I didn't want to have to say it It doesn't have to be in the dark, I stick to weekend days mostly. In particular I like the LRT trails with the trees surrounding you covered in white. It makes me appreciate the few gifts that living in a wintry climate brings. Once you figure out which layers work best it's very easy to get comfy, especially on the trails which block the wind. Often (not last year...) the paths are cleared before the roads! Awesome. |

New user 39 | Subject: RE: At what temperature do you stop running outside? I actually signed up for the Polar Dash on New Year's Day but didn't run it. I believe it was below 10 that morning. I did buy a bunch of clothes to get me through the cold though. I am cursed as a humongous freeze-baby so I have wuss beat by a good country mile. I think as long as you are training as it gets colder out, you will get used to it. Just like when 70 degrees feels cold in the fall and downright hot in the spring. Love this state! |

I won't run below -5* but it's most often the ice that keeps me inside. Out here in the corn, the roads are not too bad and I can run in the middle of the lane and no one will even know. I also run on gravel a lot and it's pretty nice with a cushion of snow. |

Ice storms and severe thunder/lightning in the immediate vicinity are the only reasons I do not. I've run in windchills up to -55 (air temps in the -20s) before. As long as you're dressed right, you're fine. ETA: I only ride outside when the weather is San Diego-esque, however. Otherwise, I am sitting on my trainer with a nice book or a DVD. I won't ride outside if there is a hint of ice or heavy frost. I've had one bad crash and do not look forward to the healing process again. |

I actually do less true running in the winter and do a lot of snow shoe running. I have a nice golf course right next to my house that is completely untouched in the winter. It is like my private park. My dog and I go out almost everyday snow shoe running. I bought an LED headlamp for myself and a lighted dog collar for the dog and we go out at night too. I actually am looking forward to the cold and the snow of winter. |

I have a touch of asthma, and if I attempt to run in negative temps I'll cough for about 72 hours afterward. I'll echo what others have said, though, it is often more about the footing than the temp. I've run in 20 degrees where you are on a frozen gravel trail and it feels great, but in 35 degrees where a gravel surface is half ice / half mud and it is misery. I'll agree with the majority and say it's the footing not the temp/wc that dictates running outside in the winter. I've run in -25 wc w/no problems. Dead of winter, with no thaws, the bike paths are usually fine. Probably the worst time is late winter/early spring when it starts to warm up enough to get day thaws and night freezes resulting in glaze ice in the low spots. |
