Subject: Logging bike time, what do most do?
I noticed a comment in someone's blog yesterday that biking on a stationary bike should be logged in the sports category and not under bike because it is not the same thing (and there is a stationary bike category under sports). I guess the same could be said for riding a bike on a trainer too. But some of us (especially in the winter), can only ride indoors. I think logging indoor riding under biking is ok because then I can see how much time I have spent doing something similar to road biking. I've just started making log entries, so I guess what I am trying to get at is what do most of you do. Do you count your indoor bike workouts under bike time or do you log it under stationary biking?

I guess the same could be said for treadmill vs running outdoors. Winter will be here some day and indoor workouts will be the norm.

Just trying to follow whatever is customary on BT since I am new here. (Or maybe it's just do whatever floats your boat....LOL!)

Before I got my bike I would log my stationary bike time and the estimated miles (although i probably shouldn't have) under my bike time.. cause it was the best I had to offer. I've never riddent on a trainer but from what I understand it is WAY more similar to riding on the road than to the stationary bike.

It kinda depends on what you have to work with..

If riding outside during the winter is not an option.. then log your trainer miles under acutal biked. The only problem I can see with this though is that you should be careful when you are comparing bike time/distance during months on the trainer and months on the road. Different stuff.

Just my view on it though...

anyone else?

The option of listing rides in the bike or sports category is up to each individual.  As far as I am concerned, whether I ride a bike on the road or on roller or ride a stationary bike at the gym, it's all cycling time and I enter it in the bike portion of my blog!

Here's how I look at it:

If it's on a real bike it gets logged as bike time, whether it's inside or outside. If it's on a stationary/spinning bike it gets logged as exercise, primarily because the speed and distance on those things just isn't accurate, and the effort just isn't the same.

Treadmill seems to be more accurate/realisitc, so I log that as running.

Regardless, it's your thing, do what you want to do.

Thanks all for the input!

(still haven't quite decided how I want to do my log, but I'll think about it some more. )
Anyone else who wants to chime in too, feel free.

I have a spinner bike in the basement and use it in the winter and for specific cycling training like isolated leg training etc. I log my time on the spinner as cycling, but don't enter any distance. It isn't "sports" to me, it's tri training so it gets logged as such.

I just want to thank you for asking the question because as our weather has turned colder I've been wondering the same thing. Thanks for asking it. I think I'm going to log it under cycling time with a note that it was indoors. That way next spring if I'm looking back to compare distance/times I'll know which ones to compare them to. Of course, I plan on being SO MUCH FASTER that I won't even want to look back. Ha!

Stationary bike time goes under biking for me too - I usually just put a note in the comments what level I ran it on - I've gotten to the point where I've figured out which level most closely approximates my road pace so it's not too terribly far off from my road distances/times.

Stationary bike time and trainer time go in the biking category for me. I figure it's at least triathlon-appropriate muscle use, even though it's obviously not the same as riding my bike outdoors. I save the sports category for stuff that can't possibly be triathlon-specific, e.g. yoga, elliptical trainer, aerobics classes..... stuff like that.

But that's just what I do. The police don't come, either way Do what works for you.

Excellent question, and it's timely as well!

My plan it to continue to log both spinning classes and any structured indoor cycling (i.e. not just spinning while reading a mag or watching TV at the gym) as "BIKE" time. I won't estimate distances, but I'll log the hh:mm spent cycling/spinning just as I do with my outdoor riding.

Too bad outdoor cycling isn't practical year round here in the Northeast,
but maybe I will buy a used bike-trainer for the fall/winter ahead...hmmm.

Cheers, -Sunny
