Subject: GARMIN UPLOADING IS NOW A FREE FEATURE
Way back in the dark ages of 2008 when we first introduced uploading Garmin data to our training logs it was a novel feature.  Very few online training logs had this ability and it was something you had to pay for across the board.  Given this and the expense of developing and supporting device uploads, we made it one of our Performance Member features. This was reasonable.

Since then it's become more common and athletes such as yourselves have come to expect it to be a free feature of any decent training log. This is also reasonable.

Given this, uploading from Garmins to the BeginnerTriathlete training logs is now a free feature. Enjoy.

We've been aware for some time that this would have to happen. Features like this tend to become commodities and we like it that way. It forces us to keep getting better.

Please note that this pertains to earlier models, not FIT file devices.  This is 310XT and earlier. You may have to login and logout and/or do a cache flush (Ctrl+F5) to enable this.

This also brings up a few questions:

What about new Garmin models like the Edge 500 etc.? What about mass uploads of workouts? What about other manufacturers like Polar?

We've got you covered. Once we have a couple of minor things from the Custom Training Plan Creator worked out and the version 1 of iPhone and Android apps out (I'm getting what should be the final iPhone demo in a few hours) our next big project is increasing the device upload capability to handle FIT files, mass uploading and include other brands.  We don't want to give a release date, but it will be worked on starting in January. And once it's live, it will be free.

This is a great feature, and I am really glad it is a part of the site, but how do I stop the site from asking if I want to grant access to my Garmin device?

I keep getting a pop-up asking this question when I am in the training logs.  I don't have a Garmin training device--only a GPS for my car, so I obviously don't want it downloading from that!  Someday I will step up to the Garmin running watch, but until then, is there a way to turn off this pop-up?

Thanks!

The next update to this will prevent the pop-up. I may be able to add in a short term fix over the next couple of days. I agree, it is annoying.

It won't recognize my Forerunner 305   And I tried two different browsers, latest software, and both work with the Garmin site.  Sigh.

just a tip to users of the Chrome browser, it says that Garmin Communicator is not compatible.  this is not correct (per se).  Install the "User Agent for Chrome" extension, add a permanent spoof in the prefs for beginnertriathlete.com to use Safari for Mac and viola, you can upload Garmin workouts from Chrome.  Previously I had to use Safari just to upload workouts.

haven't tried on Windows, just Mac, but if the Garmin Communicator for Windows doesn't work there, then this should fix that too.

now just waiting on the FIT file compatibility

What about loading BT workouts ONTO your Garmin device?:

I am looking into the 305, since it is now available at such a good price ~$130 from Amazon, Sears, etc.  One thing I would like to consider before the purchase is whether I can load workouts from programs I selected at BT onto the 305.  I know the Garmin Training Center can be used to program workouts on the device.  Can BT workouts be transfered onto Garmins, either directly or via the Training Center?

I have searched the BT website, and all I can find is references to saving completed Garmin workouts in the BT Training Log.

Thanks

Are you following the instructions in the original post?  I just uploaded my workout and it was a very simple process.  I find it hard to understand how you are not able to do it when everyone else seems to have no issue.  Additionally do you actually have any workouts to upload on the particular day in your logs?

Very cool.  Automatically uploads the minutes in each HR zone.
Reminding me that I'm running harder than I should have been.

Thanks- this is great. One question: my lap data didn't transfer over. The total time, overall HR data, etc. transferred fine but the lap data (mile splits, HR for those splits, etc.) did not come through. I am working from a GArmin 405. Browser is IE8 and my computer is running Windows XP Professional. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

This is great news... but would be better if i could see my lap times in the chart below the line graph.  It's there when I first upload, but magically disappears after that.

Have a Garmin Forerunner 305 with updated software but get message saying device not found and plug in was not unlocked successfully.  I am able to transfer my info to Garmin Connect from my Foreunner with no issues.  I know I'm probably missing something obvious but this stuff is all new to  me.
Thanks for your help.

the most common cause of this is a mis-typed url.  Make sure that you're going to 'www.beginnertriathlete.com'. Note the three w's.  Check your bookmark to make sure it doesn't have two or four.

Should non-performance members be able to see the uploaded lap data or is that still a pay feature?  My wife can now upload runs from her 305 but the "Lap Data" option doesn't show in her training blog (for her or me when I look at her logs).
