![]() Swim
Comments: Had a great swim, nice and steady and relaxed, got out of the water with HR around 100 and felt like a warm up. didn't get bodyglide high enough on neck so I got a nice wetsuit "kiss". Went out quick for 100 yds since I had a great slot, then backed off. Had hardly anyone kicking me crawling over me as a result. Caught a few great drafts and hardly had to sight, since there were so many people in the water. Got out of water with Luis Alvarez, 41 time IM finisher. What would you do differently?: Should have brough bottle down to waters edge then tossed it, they had no water/gatorade and waters edge. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Volunteers were absolutely fantastic. They handed me anything from me special needs bad I needed and sent me on my way. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Bike
Comments: I drank not stop and still got dehyradated. After 95 miles I stopped to go the bathroom and my pee was almost brown. That really freaked me out so I spun the last 17 miles while trying to dump as much fluid in me as possible. The course looked like a battlefield, bikers sitting on the side of the road cramped up, dillusional. Heat will really mess with you if you're not careful. What would you do differently?: Drink, drink, drink. It is never enough. Also, I definitely need more hill training, and some lower back strngthening (which was killing by the end of the bike) ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Volunteers again to the rescue. They basically dress you if you let them. I took my time in T2 to eat some solids and drink more, plus the Air conditioning was lovely. Baby wipes in the T2 bag was also a great idea. Helped to get the salt mine off of me. ![]() Run
Comments: Ran the first mile and realized decided to stop since my kidneys region felt like someone sticking a butter knife into them. Decided to walk for an hour... which turned into walking for 6 hours. I shuffled a little, but found that my run was only about 1.5 min/mile slower, and the walk felt a lot better. Drank a ton of fluids as I walked and ended up starting to pee and again... and lite yellow. Saw Heidi and Brad twice each and urged them on... they looked strong. Had huge blisters on my feet but one popped with about 4 miles to go so I started running again. Ran 3/4 of the last 4 miles and finished with a huge smile on my face. What would you do differently?: Put a pair of dry socks in my special needs run. ![]() Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat, heat, heat. Event comments: They don't kid around at these things. Volunteers and organizers were top notch. Given the conditions (slowest win time ever and highest # of DNF's ever), I was happy. I accomplished my goal and that was to finish and be an Ironman. Not bad for my third triathlon ever!!!!
