I have eight Google Music Beta Invites.

They will go to the first eight people who I deem to have sufficiently good taste in music.  You will demonstrate this in this thread by listing at least four musical artists who's work you like and what you like about it, followed by a short note explaining why you should get the invite.

Note that there is absolutely nothing subjective about this. It's all about what I think of your taste in music.

I only listen to this band called IV Gone Bad.

Nothing else.

Do you even need to ask WHY I like them?

(do I win?)

Actually, we changed it to 4 Gone Bad. Turns out people don't get the whole Roman numeral thing.

And yes, you win. PM me your email address.

Don't know if you'll like my taste in music, but it is defiantly unique (at least as far as i can tell)

1) The Greatful Dead--- They play like they love to play I know most if not all of there music was acid induced, but the way there jam sessions go on you can tell these dudes just have a passion for music, I like that.

2) Justin Townes Earl--- If you've never heard of him you should YouTube him.  His songs are story's the way they were in the old days, not just loud noise.  I like his old time blues sound.

3) The Rolling Stones--- These guys are just classic.  If you don't know why i like them then i don't want the invite anyway.

4) Gillian Welch---  She has a beautiful voice, and does not have a giant band to cover her sound up.

Why I should get the invite?????

Well maybe i shouldn't based on my taste in music, but me and my girls (4 and 5) love music, they sit in my lap and we listen to music on YouTube for hours on end.  Listing to music with them in my lap is like being in heaven.  It is better than anything on earth.

4 Musical Artists:

-Jimmy Buffett - easy & fun to listen to, relaxing.  I love the frame of mind this music puts me in.

-AC/DC - great workout music plus I can sing along.

-George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic - great beat to run to

-Van Halen- classic rock just can't be beat

Why?

Google Music will enable me to easily get my music onto my new phone.  This in turn will remove one more excuse for me not to run.  This will help me get off of my butt and back into shape, which will quickly lead me back into triathlons and therefore, BT.com.  Help me, help you.  Win-win.

The Grateful Dead put you immediately off the list. I just don't get them. At all.

However...each subsequent artist further redeemed you.  Ending with Gillian Welch sealed it. I've seen her live both with and without Dave Rawlings. Her new record is awesome. If you're not familiar with the Dave Rawlings Machine I recommend that you listen to them.

Yes, you get an invite despite the hippie thing.PM me your email address.

I am pretty eclectic, I like what I like, but here goes:

Motown - is any explanation necessary?

Bruce Springsteen - Because he's The Boss. Plus I'm a Philly boy and used to live in Joisey

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Great workout music and my teenage boys and I have something in common here.

Pink Floyd - I had a misspent youth, what can I say?

Stevie Ray Vaughan/Eric Clapton - Sometimes I just need loud blues guitar!

And I love jazz too....

Pat Metheny - best of the current jazz guitarists, been a PM fan for 25 years.

Miles Davis - especially older Miles. So much talent and soul.

T. Monk - Straight, no chaser. Unbelievable pianist, unbelievable life.

I should get the invite because I'll use the heck out of it! Music is always on at home and in the office. And it get progressively louder and edgier as we chase deadlines.

Another entry that starts lame and gets better. Jimmy Buffet is the equivalent of the hair metal band Poison, just with an acoustic guitar and a Hawaiian shirt plus the marketing schtick of Kiss. Boring.

But...anyone who lists AC/DC and P-Funk can't be all bad.  The motivation to run thing is also good.

You get an invite. PM me your email address.

Pearl Jam - their early music was when I was in college and brings alot of memories   great to see live

REM - I grew up listening to them and they changed music in many ways

Guns and Roses - great pounding music to workout to  some of their songs still get me motivated

Led Zepplin - early listening to Zep with my sisters in the 70's  only thing we had in common  they also changed music

Well what chat think?

Queen - what's there to say

Linkin Park - I can take them or leave them.

Zac Brown Band - A friend who's opinion I greatly respect recently engineered some recording they did and he said they're really nice guys, very professional, great musicians.

Ke$ha - What are you ten years old?

Queen - nothing else need be said.

I am impressed with the breadth of your tastes, however you do lack some depth.

You just made it, as I'm hoping you'll use this as a tool to find some more music that requires some deeper listening.

1) Airborne Toxic Event --- Recent obssesion, I've been aware of them for the past couple of years, but didn't give them much attention till I stumbled across their cover of Book of Love from their concert DVD. Still not all that crazy about their commercial released stuff, but they made accoustic, one take videos for all of the songs off their latest album that are fantastic. Search for Airborne Toxic Event Bombastic videos on youtube. Numb, All at Once and All for a Woman are my favorites.

2) Kings of Leon--- Sadly, they seem to be imploding via "Lead Singer Ego Syndrome". Love their origins of travelling with their (questionably moraled) preacher father to revival camps all over the south. Unlike many of their core fans, I like their more refined last two albums better than the rawness of their earlier offerings.

3) Robert Plant --- I'm listening to more of his newer stuff (esp with Allison Krause) more than Led Zepplin lately, but I'll cheat and include both. They way his music has evolved is a pretty good parallel to my musical tastes as I get older. I still like the heavy, loud older stuff, but have more appreciation for the more mellow music. The fact that he's been able to do both is still creating at such a high level after all these years makes it even better.

4) Red Hot Chili Peppers ---  Have to include them based on how often they are played on my favorite radio/XM stations and how much space they take up on my ipod/mp3 playlists. Except for a brief time when Under the Bridge was first released, they've never been at the top of list, but they've remained in the top ten for almost two decades now. That has to say something about my musical tastes.

5) (you said "at least four") Death Cab for Cutie --- Hate the name and Ben Gibbard isn't the most charismatic lead man, but they are from my home state and I have to admit Ben can crank out songs that I really like. I think my favorite alternative station is playing 3 or 4 songs from Codes and Keys in their regular rotation right now and I like them all. I even like his Postal Service stuff, though the drum machine gets to be a bit much for me by the end of most of the songs.

Why I should get an invite -

I'm in the process of switching over my workout music from my ipod to my Android phone. My gen 3 Nano is getting flakey on me (probably due to me sweating like a pig). I just got a waterproof armband for my Evo to use with both swimming and running and would love to see how Google has integrated music management between web, desktop and mobile.

Amazon Cloud Player is interesting, but I'm not thrilled with the interface, especially playlist management. If Google has a better offering, finding out now would be much better than after I've gotten fully switched over to something else. I'd greatly appreciate the chance to find out about it.

Great list, although I haven't felt the need to get any new Pat Metheny music is quite a while. The Seneca quote in your sig also helped.

You're in.

Two invites left.

BTW I have a good Motown related story:

I'm a bass player and I bought the Book/Cassette package called "Standing In the Shadows of Motown", which was about James Jamerson, the bass player on most of the old Motown songs. This was iin 1989. I didn't know anything about Jamerson but I knew I loved the bass playing on those Motown tunes. Plus Geddy Lee was in it. It had to be good, right?

I was tending bar in a hotel bar in Boston's theater district at the time and had the occasional celebrity sit down. One afternoon after the lunch rush, the bar's dead and 4 guys in really nice looking track suits and with expensive looking watches sit at the bar. Very low key, nice guys. They definitely looked familiar. After getting their drinks I had to ask who they were.

The biggest of the group answers in a deep voice "We're the Temptations. In town to do a corporate gig."

The Temptations? It hit me that I was looking at and talking to Melvin Franklin. Otis Williams was sitting there too. No idea who the other two younger guys were. I told Mr. Franklin I was a bass player. He immediately said "You and me, we're brothers man, we're both all about the bass." Then I told him I was a fan of Jamerson's playing and I was currently reading/listening to the book. It floored him that I actually knew who Jamerson was. He was really, genuinely surprised by that. Until relatively recently the musicians on those recordings were almost completely unknown. They spent the next hour telling me stories about the old days.

They were just killing time in the hotel bar before another corporate gig. I got one of the most incredible afternoons of my life and some great first hand reminiscences about Jamerson, the Funk Brothers, etc.

White Stripes - awesome, awesome workout music. So sad they have split

Mumford & Sons - it just makes me happy to listen to

Aimee Mann - one of the best voices out there - the "Forgotten Arm" album was/is remarkable

Wilco - hard to describe, but truly a fantastic band. I've seen them twice live and will now attempt to see them any time they get close to Maine (which, unfortunately is not terribly often)

Brad - Shawn Smith (the lead singer) is a god. Enough said.

Hmmmm, I guess Country AND Western, along with Muzak, is out of the question.  Darn.

Well, I'll play and try:
1). One eskimO
2). Anything that Marmadaddy likes.
2 (revisited)).  Robin Trower (specifically the Bridge of Sighs LP)
3). Deep Purple and Rainbow
4). Pink Floyd

One eskimO is obviously much different than the other three selections, but I like how every song in their CD had such emotional meaning and love - their music was extremely relaxing and pleasant, too, which is a nice change of pace after listening to a lot of hard, angst tunes all day long.
The classic bluesy, power riffs produced by the next two choices just feeds my soul.
Number 4) needs no reasoning due to great musicianship and song-writing talents.

I believe with my evaluation that I would be a great candidate to receive Marmadaddy's Google Beta invite, and would appreciate the honor.

Thank you.
