I've been running for 6 years and never really run with music unless it's on the treadmill in the winter. I just recently started running with an iPod on longer runs (an hour or more) to help me get thru it (I'm not a fan of running) . It would drive me crazy though, cos I had to stop every 15 minutes to start it over after I was getting into a song. Well...

I bought an iPod Nano yesterday and I LOVE IT!!! I ran for an hour without having to futz around with it. it fits perfectly into the little key pocket inside my shorts and I kept getting smiles from people as I ran along air drumming my hands. it made this one of the best runs I have had in a loooooong time.

If you run with an iPod and can't deal with the skipping, this was made for you - that's why it's $$$ but it is SOOOO worth it.

Just had to share.

Curious how the Nano will hold up if I am sweating all over it?
I have a pretty high sweat rate when I run...
Did you buy a case or armband? (waterproof or otherwise)?

I don't think it would hold up if you held it the whole time you were running. Like you, I sweat gallons. I use armband on my Ipod Mini which kind of keeps it away from the sweat. However, I am going to buy a cover for it to make it even better. The wife is going to get a Nano in the next week or so.

There are armbands and covers for the Nano, so it seems like it would be great for running. Thinking about getting one myself for that. The 40GB iPod I have is just too heavy.

I have not purchased a case or armband for it yet. It is SO TINY and light I couldn't imagine wanting to hold it as it mioght slip out of my hand. They do have a headphone/lanyard accessory that hangs around your neck (although it would just bounce around too much I would think). I was running with a 40G on occassion and it drove me crazy. I'd go with the armband or an iSkin type case and drop it in your pocket.

I use an armband for my (now out-dated) Rio MP3 player and love it. Keeps it out of the way and I don't even really notice it on my arm at all. If I were to get a Nano (not that I need a new MP3 player....), I'd get the case and the armband holder.

I have a nike/philips mp3 player that I use sometimes. I imagine the armband is similar material to the apple armbands. It didn't chafe me at all on my bare arm, but it would a bit when around a sleeve.

Ha, too funny. I've run for a year or so with my 3G 20gig iPod, and I just run with it in my hands (alternating hands for long runs). It doesn't bother me at all, I just must have gotten used to it. I've got a MarWare neoprene wetsuit on the thing, it gives me something to hang on to and keeps the sweat off while protecting the screen and back.

I don't use the armband or the velcro lid, those just come off, and I run with just the neoprene sleeve on.

I assume that they'll be coming out with something similar for the Nano soon . . . when I got my iPod, all I could think of was, "It's soo cute and small!" Now that the Nano is out, all I can think of is "my iPod is so ugly and bulky!"

I bought the iPod Shuffle 6 months ago, and just wish I had waited for the Nano! The "Mini" was bigger and heavier than I wanted for running, which is why I went with the Shuffle. I love it, and have the neoprene arm band to hold it. I have the $99 version, which is 512 MB, and holds 150 songs! I could run all day and not listen to all of them....

Hey, I own all kinds of Apple products, so far from objective... but couldn't you achieve this with the Shuffle ? I know, fewer songs and no way to select them but pretty cheap, lightweight device for workouts....

Ditto. I use my shuffle for long runs and bike rides. It really helps enhance the workout. The armband's only weakness is that you can't enclose the shuffle in a waterproof case. So if it rains you're screwed. But the thing is so light it's practically not there.

i have had www.macmall.com minimized on my desktop for about two weeks now... How i have kept myself from dropping the $250 for the nano for this long is beyond me.

One question... i've always hezitated to use old mp3/cd players while biking... i have enough trouble staying out of cars grills w/o earbuds in my ears... i cant image jamming out to the beastie boys on the bike would help that much... is it still safe? or am i just being rediculous?

All I hear without the ipod is wind noise anyway. You still hear honks, screeches, etc just fine. You really can't hear vehicles approaching from your rear regardless so I haven't found it makes a difference. I wouldn't do it in heavy traffic but out on a country road it seems to make no difference. I don't blast it but do keep it loud enough to enjoy.

That is all.

if it were possible to actually put one's child on pause i'm sure that'd be the biggest selling item in the history of item selling.

I suppose, but when you have a music collection that far exceeds 3,000 cd's and a commute on the subway, having options is important (to me at least). I also like to see what the song or artist are cos sometimes I forget. I don't like that I can't see it on the shuffle.

If I understad the Ipod website correctly, the technology in the Nano is similar to the Shuffle. I have a shuffle and just hang it around my neck when I run. I too sweat a lot, expecially in the humid Minnesota Summer. It has never been a problem with my Shuffle. I leave it home when I run in the rain, but sweat hasn't been a problem. Neither has dropping it. The only downfall has been the rope that comes with the Shuffle, it stains with sweat.

Good Luck,
Jay

I have a Sony Cassette Walkman. Circa 1987. I'm not kidding. I have a belt/pouch I wear around my waist. It's so heavy and non conducive to long runs! Am planning to get a computer and a Nano this winter. And a digital camera. (!!!)

((RANT ON))

DO NOT wear headphones of any kind while riding your bike. Seriously. This will get you immediately disqualified in a race, obviously.... aside from that it's DANGEROUS. If you are on a path, you won't be able to hear pedestrians, other bikers, skaters behind you.... and you won't hear them when they say...(sometimes not loudly) "On your left!"

Riding a bike with a music headset on the road is twice, maybe three times as dangerous! You need to have all your faculties surrounding you while you're riding on the road. Many drivers don't care if they come too close, approach you from behind too fast, or generally get in your space. You need your ears on the road just as much as you need your eyes. I'm no prude, and I'm no Suzi-safety... I'm just exercising common sense after having ridden 1400 miles on the road this summer alone. Wearing a headset is about as smart as going out without your helmet.

I'm basically with Laura on this, I never wear headphones while on the bike, but that's just as much due to personal preference as anything else. I like the mental exercise of focussing on pedalling, my form, my level of effort, etc. "Do what you are doing" as the sage said.

Having said that, in NY state it is legal to wear a listening device in one ear while riding a bike on public roads. Check your state laws before putting on the headphones while riding a bike on the road. You may not get a ticket, but if you get hit by a car you may be giving the driver's lawyer all the ammo they need to make their case.

For my iPod shuffle I bought a silicone cover with a clip. It attaches quite nicely to my shorts. I bought it on eBay for about 5 bucks, comes in a variety of colors. Mine, of course, is pink.

The only pain about the shuffle is when you're running and really want to hear a certain song, or even a certain TYPE of song, it's really hard to find it quickly. Other than that it's awesome.
