Ok in reviewing the GFT results from last weekend I noticed that the guy who came in 6th overall had the following splits: 1:24 swim, 6:30 bike, 2:46 run.......what's wrong with this picture? I am not saying that the guy cheated but getting off the bike and running a marathon that fast after being so slow in the other events just looks fishy to me.....have any of you ever seen anyone cheat (i.e. turn around before the turn around on the bike/run, cut the course on the swim intentionally)....just curious.

I'd call that shady but possible. I have a pal who is what you might call an "elite" age grouper who is barely average on a bike. His marathon PR is around 2:35 but on the bike he can't keep up with me for a 15 mile ride, it could just be that this dude is a runner by trade who happens to be giving this sport a tri... I'm so punny.

I have a freind, "One arm" Willie Stewert. For the first few years of tri'ing he was constanly being DQ'd because in every race he would have the slowest swim split, but would have the fastest run split of everybody. He would have to dispute the decision with the RD and tell them he only had one arm, that's why he was so slow in the water.

Also, this guy could just have been saving his legs for the run ...or maybe he cheated

It very well could be....and I am assuming that the race officials verified that he indeed ran 3 and not 2 laps around the lake (and given the state of confusion and disorganization there that is assuming ALOT!).  That being said even if he is an elite runner after banging out 112 miles on a bike I would be shocked and amazed if he ran that fast. If he did good for him though, it just sparked a discussion here at work about cheating in tri's and I wanted to get everyones opinion here.

Brett, I thought about that on the course. They should have had a timing mat around mile 25 so they would know if everyone went over it 3 times.

Either that or wristbands of different colors to denote each lap....it could have been a misinformed volunteer sent him to the finishing chute not knowing that he only had done 2 laps. Am I wrong in questioning this result?

No, question it. His swim time was slower than mine! (or about the same)

Wristbands would have taken too long. I think a timing mat would have been better. I was more worried (and this coudl be the case) of my mental state, I was fuzzy, and not remembering what lap I was on.

I googled the guy. Could be legit unless he cheats in all his races. He ran a 38:16 in a Oly distance and a number of his other just regular 10k times are in the 30's as well.

Running a 10k after an Oly and a marathon after 112 is completely different....Like I said before though good for him if he is able to run like that. Hell get him a coach and he could win some big races with a run split like that.

Ohhh, You didn't say there were 3 loops. He cheated for sure, whether it was on purpose or not, i'm not sure, but when he finished his marathon about 2 hours faster than he should have. You think he would have noticed.

Say he did cheat (which looks like the general consensus here), will YOU personally do anything to follow up on your discovery?

Mention it to someone else and hope that they go to RD?

LOL Get in contact with #7 Overall and see if S/HE goes to the RD?

Shame on #6.

Actually, those 10K splits tend to make me a bit more suspect. If he was running mid to low 30's maybe. But high 30's? That means after doing an extra 85 miles on the bike and having to run more than 4 times the distance his pace fell off less than 10 seconds per mile. A 4:05 marathon seems like a bit of a drop off, but it's a lot more likely.

But to be PC along with the other Brett, good on 'im if it was legit.

  • Could be that ... towards the end of the race I believe everyone's faculties are a bit rattled - even more so during a longer distance race such as this. Couple the problems some have mentioned with the volunteers ...

But also consider my less than stunning splits for the Hiawassee Okotberfest race:

    Brian .... (37) place: 11 time 37:17 -- place 7 time 59:44 -- place 4 time 31:23
    total= 2:08:25

The times and placement progressively got better ... but not because of some great endurance miracle, but because I stink that much at swimming!

I'm sure the #7and on have looked though...I've looked at my competitors splits already.

I am personally not going to do squat about it, if I had missed a World's slot as a result I would have raised hell about it, but if you will recall I didn't finish the race so that is a moot point. It just struck me as interesting that the guy had such poor swim and bike splits and the ran a world class marathon (for a tri). Peter Reid who is arguably the fastest pro runs a 2:40-2:45 normally so I just don't buy that this guy has that great of a run. Just stirring the pot on a Friday!!

Now you got me curious, I found a 1:18 Half Mary Split (4:06 total) at last year's Eagleman for him, so maybe he's just a heck of a runner...

    bts

Edit - Also found a low 30's 10 K split coupled with a 1:04 (23 mph+) bike split at last year's Tri-America in Clermont. So maybe he just had a crappy day on the bike and then went nuts. Or was holding back significantly on purpose. And every race I find on him he's consistently very high in the rankings, so if he did cheat he's made a career of it.

Strange though that his time is nearly an hour faster than the fastest times for 2003 and 2004.
    But..who knows.
Sorry but I had to go back and look at the numbers again. No way. He missed a lap. No way he ran a 2:46 based on his swim and bike ability. Unless God "miracled" his ass for 26.2 miles, he skipped a lap. Add another 1:30 to his run time and it falls in line with his swim and bike times.
