Resident Curmudgeon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have a little marathon coming up in December, spending four nights in the place where "what happens here, stays here" (no, NOT the confessions thread!). Haven't been there in 30 years so looking for some sightseeing/what-to-do tips. We've booked rooms at the Tropicana, looked like a good compromise between cheap and outrageous, right there at the start/finish. Thinking about doing the traditional tourist stuff, Folies Bergere, Penn and Teller, maybe a day trip to Hoover Dam. Would definitely appreciate any tips on other shows, palces to eat, best buffet, other sights to see, |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Bear - can't offer you any Vegas tips but look forward to your race report. I had contemplated running Vegas last year but training up to it did not work out. This year I see they have changed the course so I look forward to reading peoples reviews. Personally I think I would have liked the run through the desert. Good luck! |

Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bear, I wanted to see Penn and Teller but they weren't playing when I was there. I really liked Blue Man Group, my dad really liked it and he's not a big theatre/show kinda guy, and all of the Cirque de Sole (sp) shows are good. May I suggest getting re married at the Viva Las Vegas wedding chapel? For food, the Manadaly Bay has good seafood, lobster, king crab, etc. Not like where you're from though so you may want to skip that. I thought the Aladdin buffet was great for the price (under $20 I think). Circus Circus was good too I hear. Edited by TriComet 2005-10-31 12:10 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() there is a little italian place inside Circus Circus that has, hands down, the best ginger ale on the planet. and i do consider myself to be a ginger ale connoisseur. thats about all the help that i can offer. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No food tips here, but.... Hoover Dam is definitely pretty cool (even though they no longer allow you inside the dam like they used to pre-9/11). If you want hiking-cool-scenery kind of stuff, Valley of Fire (about an hour's drive) is a good place to go. All sorts of red rock formations, and if you hike in to some of the spots, you can see pictographs that were carved into the stones. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looks like you don't plan to see any of the cirque du soleil shows. Well, if you want to see at least one Cirque show, I would recommend "O" at Bellagio. As for buffets, I like Bellagio's the most. MGM's breakfast buffet has very tasty bacon at the carving station. Mirage buffet sucks, despite the fancy decor. The French bakery inside Paris has nice flaky croissants and strong coffee. |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go to Battista's Hole in the Wall. Best Italian in the city. It's been there forever and is and old Rat Pack haunt. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go to the Coke Complex (the building with the huge Coke Bottle in front of it) and starting at 1:30 (or somewhere around there) each day you can get pretty steeply discounted tickets for some of the B shows (and the occasional Blue Man Group/P&T). Personally I think that some of those shows are more entertaining (and since they're smaller you have a better change of getting to be one of the audience participants). If you don't mind dropping 75 or so bucks a head (actually it'll probably be a good bit less than that if you don't drink), get reservations at the Olive in the Bellagio. I don't think you can call them in, but if you show up about 2 in the afternoon and wait in line 20 or so minutes you can get reservations for a table on the balcony looking out onto the water show. Don't sit at third base if you don't know how to play Black Jack, especially in that town. And stop by New York/New York and tell that damn $100 slot that I haven't forgotten that it owes me 3 bills. bts Edit - P.S. I've never thought the Bellagio's buffet was worth it. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We saw Lance Burton at Monte Carlo two years ago...ok show...Make sure you don't get stuck walking around too much before the Race. (you can get alot of walking miles just in some of the casinos) |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stay away from the foleys, I seen it last year and all I can say is if it was totally nude it still would not make it exciting. The hot thing right now and what I wish I would have seen was zoomanity, it is part of the circus de sole (whatever) and it is mostly topless or nude and the do amazing stunts and stuff. It is always packed. |

Brett, if Bellagio's buffet isn't worth it, which would you recommend? |

Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Circus Circus. Aladdin. Not too expensive, wide variety, pretty good for buffet food! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() While you wouldn't know it by looking at my 230 lbs frame, I'm actually more of a quality over quantity guy when it comes to food (hence the Olive recommendation). I can't say that any of them have really blown me away. I would usually leave the tables around 2 am so they're all pretty steeply discounted at that point, and for $10 I'm never going to complain about an all you can eat spot. I know there was one that I liked a little better than the rest, but I can't remember which casino now... I'll ask one of my gamblin' buddies and get back to you. So I guess my main point would be: sleep all day, catch the late shows, and then eat on the cheap. bts |

DAMN I MISS VEGAS!!! :( This was in front of the Venetian. Edited by tri_it_cajun_style 2005-10-31 8:49 PM (100_1264a.JPG) Attachments ---------------- 100_1264a.JPG (16KB - 29 downloads) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh.. The Delmonico steakhouse at the Venetian's is pretty good. We went there for lunch one time. When you visit the Coke museum, check out the half price ticket booth on the ground level. We got half price tickets to the Star Trek Experience at LV Hilton. It was a fun show, for a Star Trek fan like me. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For the buffets go to Treasure Island or Mandalay Bay. Delmonico is awesome but look to spend about $100 per person with tip if you are having a drink or two. I definitely recommend indoor skydiving right off the strip if still available.....cost about $40. I did a Humvee tour once and it was not worth the money, in my opinion (about $120/person). Hoover Dam was pretty cool and cheap but I would drive yourself if possible. The only show I have been to is no longer available. It seems one of the main guys gotten eaten by a lion.........if not for that I would recommend the show. Most shows are pricey as well. If you are considering these you might be able to find some cheaper tickets beforehand. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bear, I did like the buffet at Bellegio (not much personally to campare to but was told it's the best one). The ladies seemed to like the gondola ride thru the Venitian. The aquarium at Mondalay Bay was pretty cool. Agree that Delmonico was good but pricey (being from NY that doesn't happen often) Mirage has the best sports book. The craps tables at NY NY were very very good to me!!! Have fun (oh and enjoy the race too) Mark |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, having lived here for the last 12 years, I'll give you my .02 worth. Best restaurant: A.J.'S steakhouse inside the Hard Rock Hotel. Best food I've ever eaten, hands down. Second best rest.: 2nd Street Grill inside the Fremont Casino in old downtown Vegas. Awesome food, best blackend Ahi Tuna ever created. Ask for Gloria as your server, she is fantastic. Buffet: avoid the smaller casino's, the food is usually very bland and not worth the price. TI has an incredible buffet, downtown I would go with Main Street Station or the Golden Nugget. Sites: The usual Hoover Dam tour, but if you can, get out to Red Rock Canyon. It's about 15 miles west of the Strip. It is amazing. I live 6 miles east of it, and the biking and running are the best in the city, if not the entire Southwest region. Also Lake Las Vegas is very, very impressive. Hope this helps, and have a great marathon, the new course should be really good. I'm still considering doing it. I have the Silvermann IM in 2 weeks, so we'll see how the recovery goes. Best of luck, and let me know if you need any further info. Randy Shows: "O", Blue Man Group, Mamma Mia, Danny Gans (comedian-impressonist). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think restaurants in Strip hotels, whether it's a causal or upscale place, tend to be more expensive than they should be. Those Chinese noodle houses charge freakin' $8-10 for a bowl of noodle. There is a Chinese dim sum restaurant on the north end of the Strip, across from Stardust that offers good dim sum at reasonable prices. I think it's called Chang's. But cabbing there would set you back another $8-10. Rachel Ray did a $40-a-day show in LV one time. I think she ordered mostly appetizers from hotel coffee shops. Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() See Danny Gans! Great show, I think he's still at the Mirage. I would also suggest just walking aroung the Venitian, it's unreal. Great shopping for Mrs. Bear as well. As for places to eat, the days of cheap Vegas food are over, but the Buffett at Cesars and Rio are great, still not all that cheap, but heck after 26 miles, you will get your $$$ worth, I know Cesars has great sushi on their buffett as well as a varitey of crab, seafood, etc. Outside of that, if your not into the gaming stuff, it's pretty much shopping and golf. Or you could just hang out at the Hard Rock's pool and watch that show. Of course you can view their webcam from the comfort of your own computer, so... I would also suggest the car museum at the Imperial Palace, the gardens at the Mirage, dolphin show is free as are the tigers, the Ferrari dealership, I think it's you who has a thing for red. VEgas is great, but you're staying the right amount of time. I've been there a lot over the years, it's best seen in about 4 day time frames. Good Luck, Jay |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I loved Red Rock Canyon. It is a bit of a drive through the city but worth it. I enjoyed the lions at the MGM, the car museum at the Imperial, aquarium at the Mandalay, the dueling piano bar in NY/NY. Oh, the rides on the Stratosphere when done in the dark are really cool. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The Piano Bar you're talking about, is that Nine Fine Irishmen? If so, that place rules. bts |

Resident Curmudgeon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have located all the vital necessities on the strip: Subway, Chipotles, etc. Still welcome any additional info, though. |

Queen BTich ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The gellato in the Bellagio, behind the gardens at the front entrance is great. Full gellato bar. Heaven, I susgest getting a couple scoops then walking around the lobby and taking in the pretty sights in there. |
