Subject: Extended training breaks...

Does anyone regularly take long breaks in thier training, say more than a week of complete rest?  I'm having a lot of nagging issues and I'm thinking that a week or two of either complete rest or just swimming is in order to give my legs, hips and back a break.  But to be completely honest, I'm a little scared to just take all of that time off.  I don't want to gain weight, altho I could probably manage to keep my diet ultra clean for a couple of weeks.

Mostly what I'm afraid of are the mental results.  I'm crabby and  grouchy after 2 days off.  Two weeks and I'm afraid somebody's gonna get hurt.

For those who do this, how do you handle it?  Any strategies?

I don't necessarily take long breaks completely away from training, but I do pursue other interests during the off-season. I still train, but not with the same intensity or frequency, just enough to stay in my idea of reasonable shape. The rest of the time I use to get out to the woods and go hunting with my bow, hiking with the family, and just enjoying nature.

If you're really concerned for the safety of others, don't take a full break.  Instead, redirect your energies.  Use the elliptical instead of running, take spin classes instead of riding outside.  Try raquetball or basketball for a little while.

And as long as you keep the swimming going, you won't noticeably lose fitness.

I am in the midst of a month long break right now. I have those nagging injuries not to mention burnout from IM training. I usually take a month off between Thanksgiving and Christmas and get back to training after the start of the new year. A break though consists of some unstructured training (i.e. its a nice day lets go run/ride) with no specific training zones or mileage. Take some time off and recharge your batteries.

I am taking about 3 weeks off and more for swimming. As Brett said, light unstructured training would be OK but with my nagging injuries, I am done for a while.

Thanks,
Tony

I'm just finishing up 4 weeks of mostly rest.  I ran a 5k in there, went mountain biking once or twice, and swam once.  But other than that, it was nearly complete rest.

I feel very refreshed, as I had a couple nagging things after my last season too.  They are cleared up now, and I'm mentally ready to get back into a training regimine.

I may have to for my trip to ireland...I dont know if I can afford to ship my bike or if I'll have a place to swim . I don't want to come back and be completely undertrained, but it might have to be so.
