Subject: new addition to the family
yesterday we brought home a new kitten. well, he's a young cat/older kitten. we adopted him through feline rescue, a no-kill rescue shelter, and the same shelter where we got otto, our other cat. we had planned on getting a female, but the only female cat they had at the age we wanted (6-12 months - old enough to have had most of their shots, already altered, etc) was one named wendy who was VERY bonded to her brother and mom, who were all at the same foster home. even though i know they will probably be split up at some point, i couldn't be the one to do it, especially since those two kittens were still nursing. the handsome kitty we brought home had a sister and mama at the same shelter, but was already more independent and outgoing.my husband wasn't sure about getting another cat, but when 'drew' (litter name) started licking his hand and purring, i knew it was all over. there was one other kitten who was very sweet, named loli, but he was a black cat, like frida, and i didn't think i was ready to see another black cat in our house just yet.

anyway, here he is! if anyone has name ideas, feel free to post them. we're thinking we'd like something that is a bit princely, since he has a regal quality to him. personally, i love the name rufus, which means 'red-headed' but he's just NOT a rufus. maybe fergus, which was one of my favorite boy names when we were pregnant with ella (and this might be the only red-headed boy i get!). diego - after diego rivera, since our former cat was frida after frida khalo. 'weasley' and 'percy' are in the running (having just seen harry potter 4 yet again), as is 'ludo' (then we'd have otto and ludo (bagman)). searched the encyclopedia of arda (LoR), but most of the names are either too hobbity for him, or too hard to pronounce.

his litter name was drew, but his foster mom called him 'orangie'. hee hee. so, of our three pets, the each had silly litter names 'orangie' - to be renamed, 'goldie' - renamed greta, and 'uh-oh' - renamed otto.

Congrats!  He's really cute.  I have a male, orange/white tabby who kinda looks like him.  I'll have to take a few moments to think of some good names.  I named my kitty Baxter.

OMG - I had to look twice because I'd call him 'Mine!'  He's a ringer for my Purr-Chance/Chance in a Million kitten!  He looks so happy and relaxed for just getting to his new home!  These red cats look just like the golden tabby tigers pictured on www.tigerfriends.com.  They might have a 'regal' name, but I do like Fergus.  Is he vocal?  Mine 'talks' all the time - a red tabby trait.  Best of luck!

Napolean is good.  And when he sleeps on every surface in your house, you can call him "Napster."  I'm holding onto "Baffles" for my next cat ... after the look so many of them seem to wear so often.  If Chance could name himself, he'd choose "Boss."  Orange cats rule!

What is it with orange kitties squinting from the flash!  Chance does all these cute things, I take the picture and when I go back to review .... bang!  Squinting from the flash!  Black and Grey kitties do not squint from flashes!   Still soooo cute though!  The girls like to drum .... Bongo?

What a little prince!  My Mr. Bob is a lighter colored version of an orange tabby!  How does he get along with your other cat?

Name ideas:
Antonin
Leopold
William
Maximus
Henri
Bartholomew

My parents have named all their cats with "human" names (Hannah, who just passed, Jonathan, Katie, Daisy, Amelia, Agatha).  Yes, they had 6 cats.  I suppose now that Hannah is gone (so sad), they'll do their best NOT to get another one, but they just keep showing up on their doorsteps.

He is a handsome kitty. I like the name Duke. But Napolean seems a good fit for this guy! I just want to hold him and squeeze him. I love cats!

I don't recommend that name.  A dated a guy who had the name 'nuff said.  I still think Oliver is a cute name.  Napolean is too!

What does he want to be called?  Sometimes I think mine think their names are 'HEY, get off the ... .'

Your new guy is just so pretty ... when I got Million, he was just 5 weeks old.  Someone found his mom and the litter and turned them into my vet.  He purred at me when I first picked him up and I knew I wanted a 'Purr' name - Haps, Suade, Chance.  He was my first 'kitten' and I figured he was my best/last 'Chance.'  Since then, he's my Chance in a Million, my lucky kitty lottery ticket.  At 5 weeks, his personality tended towards 'Sleepy,' 'Beanbag,' and 'Yes, it's time for food.'  I need to load my camera software and post the picture of him sleeping in a tissue box his second day home.

Bartholomew is pretty - Bart!  Get off the ... works.  But he might like Drew.  Give him a fuzz and look in his eyes.  He's a smart kitty ... he'll let you know.

But then, a black hat with a feather, some black boots .... we have Antonio/Bandaras - PUSS IN BOOTS!

What I did I limited the names down to 2 final ones- Oliver and Baxter.  I would call him both those names for s very short time, and then I realized he was more of a BAxter than an Oliver.  So in some ways, cats earn their final name   Just give it some time and his personality wil decide for you. I personally like Napolean- it's cute and has character
