I tutor high school math students one evening a week and needed to get myself back up to speed in a couple of areas, Fourier series for example. My girlfiend is an avid reader, so I go to her every time I am ready for new book, tell her what I want and she picks me out one. Recent great reads include (sorry, no authors, I'm horrid at that)... Lovely Bones (quick read, well written) Enemy Women (Post Civil War Era coming of age story of a girl in rural missouri) Big Stone Gap Hubby is currently sucked into The Hades Factor I hear KiteRunner is great as well. Next on my list is a reread of Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, then a Vince Flynn book (political thriller) then probabaly Life of Pi or a brainless beach read. Please understand, this list will take me to summer, easily. I'm a slow reader. |

I like anything that elicits an emotional response, whether it be sadness, laughter, disdain, whatever. If a book moves me greatly, it's a good book in my mind. "My sister's Keeper" is about a 13 year old girl who seeks medical emancipation from her parents because she doesn't want to donate a kidney to her sister who is dying from leukemia. It is loosely based on an actual case that happened in California a few years ago. Makes for good discussion. |

| Expert 798 Potomac, Maryland | Subject: RE: Looking for a good book I'll second "Into Thin Air" which is a true harrowing account of an ill fated assault on Mt. Everest. Also recommend "The Discoverers" by Daniel Boorstin, a highly readable account of how society and science have shaped history. See Amazon for a description that does it justice. A sort of romantic Northwest U.S. World War II era mystery/love story is "Like Snow Falling on Cedars" which is nicely written. "The Once and Future King" by Theodore White is a great mythical novel that tells the tale of King Arthur, Guenivere, Merlin,and the Round Table. Read some of James Michener's classics like Hawaii if you really want to get into historical fiction. Larry McMurty and Tom Clancy are also authors that I've read and recommend. |

On the Road by Jack Kerouac is my all time favorite book. for "newer" stuff, might I suggest "Wicked". Its about the wicked witch of the west, it's pretty good. |

I loved this book and passed it on to my MIL, who gave it to my FIL and then 2 of her coworkers and her boss. Everyone enjoyed the read and agreed that it is an interesting topic. |
