Subject: Dick Cheney - A Winner Indeed
From a short item inside the Times' business section Sunday: "No matter how one feels about this particular conflict, war always has winners and losers - on both sides." Some "indisputable winners" so far? Defense contractors. Courtesy of the Times, here are six top defense contractors and the percentages by which their profits have increased since 2004: Boeing (37.4 percent), Lockheed Martin (44.2 percent), General Dynamics (19.1 percent), Northrop Grumman (29.2 percent), Raytheon (108.9 percent) and Halliburton (292.9 percent).

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) recently asserted that Cheney's stock options which were worth $241,498 a year ago, are now valued at more than $8 million-- for an increase of 3,281% . Cheney has pledged to give the proceeds to charity. Cheney continues to received a deferred salary from the company. He was paid $205,298 in 2001; $162,392 in 2002; $178,437 in 2003; and $194,852 in 2004.

I guess that was a darned good "option" for old Dick, eh!  How could he have know that his stocks would rise so meteorically?

This would be SO juicy...were it not for blind trusts and actually earning the now deferred salary previous to even being considered for VP. Damn the man for not falling conveniently into our conspiracy theories!

Is Halliburton considered a defense contractor? That's just curiosity, though I do like how you mention profits without specifying them as gross or net. Oh, how the statistics can mislead!

FINALLY somebody that get it. If this is such a no-brainer deal of a lifetime for Cheney and Haliburton, mortgage your house and put the kid's college fund up, and buy all the stock you can.

Can anyone point me to another company that provides the same services as Halliburton? Now either go out and start your own company to compete with Halliburton or shut the hell up about how much Halliburton makes.

Now you've done it - the BEAST has awoken and he will not slumber again until he has tasted the ripe flesh of a BT transgressor. He will crunch your skull and suck the marrow from your bones as he dances an evil jig on your remains. Damn.

....but to your point: start a company and do what they do? Do you mean war profiteering?

Marmadaddy, don't you recognize the advance debate and argumentative technique as outlined in the Socratic (as in Socrates) style of...oh, wait.  That was the Sopranic (as in The Sopranos) method.  Never mind.

Sorry, I don't have the same pull with the Vice President as Halliburton apparently does... Halliburton before the war was the 19th largest military contractor. Now they are numero uno. You don't find that suspicious? Take the blinders off.

I'm just saying the man lacks integrity and has no problem lining his own pockets with our money, you know, the money of the people that he was and has elected to serve. He is a true "Orren Boyle". I'm sure you know he only decided to donate that eight million when he was called on it.

This was the reason, I had to leave Raytheon. And they didn't give me any stock options.

Awesome.

Thank you.  And once again I've managed to involve myself in a debate without actually addressing any of the issues, or expressing an opinion.  I continue to impress.

Halliburton does a whole lot more that energy.

Give me a list of companies that can provide the service's, on the same scale, that Halliburton provides in relation to the Iraq conflict. Logistics management is the main service the Army "buys" from Halliburton. Give me a few names.

I'll have to do some research. BUt for arguments sake, say there isn't one company that does everything Hallibuton does. There have got to be plenty of companies that specialize in one of the things they do. So why not hire them? Who says all the contracts have to go to one company?

I could careless.....

Related to the above statement. It's more of a frustration with people complaining with no follow through.

As a example, I knew a guy who would complain about Hentz Corporation profits. I told him not to contribute to their profit, ie not buy their ketchup. But, he couldn't do that because he only like there brand of ketchup

People love to complain about "this and that" but they do nothing about "this and that".

Here is another.... Blackwater... several divisions.Training, security and consulting. I was offered a 125K  1 year contract federally tax exempt with them providing security in Iraq a couple of years ago.

Of course you have to come back with your head still on to spend it. I was a Marine scout sniper (STA Platoon) for 6 years and still would not take this deal. No freekin way I'll ever go back to the middle east.

Don't diss marmadaddy. And if you could care less, he'd probably be glad to boot you from the site for not playing nice with the other kids.

AS far as "complaiining with no follow though", that's a pretty big jump if you're talking about people on this board. You have really no idea what we do when we're not on BT.

And anyway, this is a discussion board, not a call-to-action board.
