molto veloce mama  9311   |  Subject: best comedian of all time?there are a lot of greats (lucy, mel brooks, gene wilder, steve martin, robin williams, jim belushi, eddie murphy, al franken, peter sellers, andy kaufman, jim carrey (yes, i said it!), bill cosby, the whole monty python crew, george carlin, richard pryor, jerry seinfeld, emo phillips, maria bamford, and carrottop - okay, i'm kidding on that last one)... ...but, my vote would have to go to christopher guest, the man behind 'this is spinal tap', 'waiting for guffman', 'best in show', and 'a mighty wind'. of course, michael mckean, harry shearer, parker posey, eugene levy, michael hitchcock, catherine o'hara, and fred willard are also brilliant in the guest films. I think there's a big difference between a comedian's abilities as a performer to entertain as a stand-up and their ability to write/produce material. Some can do both. It's hard to name one when there are so many different greats who do so many different things well. How do you compare Richard Pryor's stand up to the Monty Python's group sketches to Johnny Carson's deadpan looks and timing to...well..... the list goes on.

Wife and I saw him last year about a month after our son was born. Although, even FUNNIER, was the next weekend we saw TIM CONWAY and HARVEY CORMAN live. YES, i meant john. how embarassing! i'm amazed at all the people i forgot - lenny bruce, johnny carson, bob hope, red, etc. and i agree that it is hard to group all of these people together. i don't think christopher guest does stand up, for example. still, he is a comic genius. maybe that's what the thread should have been called 'best comic genius of all time'. and what about will farrell!? |

One of the funniest things I saw on TV was "Inside the Actor's Studio" with Robin Williams..OMG I split a gut .... I caught a Kathy Griffin show recently.....she was pretty funny too..
