I'm in a hotel tonight on the first night of a 3 night business trip...

So, my best friend's brother used to manage a Hyatt Hotel and he's told her all kinds of stories about the weird things that people do in hotel rooms. So now she's no fun to travel with because she wears long pajamas and socks and brings her own pillow and the last time I traveled with her, she even brought her own sheets!!!

And then I read that thread in COJ a few months ago about all the weirdos who pee in the shower. (and I didn't pack any flip flops to wear in the shower....)

So... now I'm sitting here in the hotel and worried about what kind of weirdo stayed in this room the last time....

I'm half ticked off at my friend for telling me those stories....

Does anyone else have a hotel-phobia?

No, most places clean pretty well.  Unless you are staying in some cheapo place, don't worry.

want another story????

lift up the mattress and see if there's any bugs swarming around.   I saw this on the news somewhere, a resurgence of bedbugs. ewwww...

I have heard of folks who bring air mattresses or sleeping bags to hotels.   When I was a teenager, there was a place on US 90 called the Tivoli.......   stopping now.

Ewww - hotels gross me out too. Even fancy ones like The Ritz or The Breakers. I just try not to think about it. I do like to bring my own pillow and if I forget I sometimes have been known to throw one of my t-shirts over the pillow or something. I also don't like to sit on the blankets because they don't wash them very much - I peel them back and sit on the sheets (after checking for bugs/hair.) I swear I'm not that paranoid or germaphobic - it's just hotels that freak me out. I must not be that bad though because baby #3 was conceived (surprise) on a 5th anniversary visit to a nice resort. Alcohol definitely helps calm your fears.

I had a friend who worked at hotel chains (Hyatt & Raddison) - she says to never EVER EVER sleep with the bedspread/comforter. They only get washed like once every 6 months. Seriously - even in high-end chains. The only wash the SHEETS every day, not the blankets.

She said you should immediately throw the comforter on the floor as soon as you step in the room and never touch it again. If it is cold, sleep with the blanket, but be sure you have a sheet between you and the blanket.

I will not sleep with their covers. I would rather head to Walmart or something similar and buy a cheap set for myself. Don't take a black light into the room, you will find all of the nastiest things.

Hotels are really gross. Never place anything on the bathroom counter--most of the cleaning crew uses ONE cloth/rag to clean the whole bathroom and they don't necessarily start with the counter. I always place my stuff on a towel.

Supposedly the TV remote is the single most infected/disgusting thing in the room. I always find a plastic baggie to slip over the remote (the ones covering the plastic drinking cups work well) if I'm going to watch TV.

Yeah, I was going to ask if you guys only travel to posh places. I can share lots of stories about backpacking through Asia.

Stuff like this doesn't really bother me. I mean I can lie on the sand on the beach with bugs crawling around me, why not on a bed in some hut with a thatched roof?

I used to make my living in cover bands playing in clubs and at functions etc.  Most clubs would put the bands up in the same place week to week. I have two words for you that make your hotel stories insignificant:

"Band House"

I need amoxycillin just thinking about it.

Unless you packed your very own plastic bubble, this is a train of thought that is guaranteed to make you unhappy.

BTW - don't go in the hot tub. Trust me.

This is true, gross but true!

I don't want to think about it! ha!

This the last day of this 3 day trip...I found out on Wednesday, that the hotel that I stayed in on Tuesday night is supposedly haunted. Gosh! Here I was worried about germs while I should have been worried about ghosts! ha!

After 3 nights at 3 different hotels I should have a a stonger immune system, eh?

I used to laugh at my friend, though. She would dress like she was going into the bird flu ward of the hospital when she got ready for bed at a hotel. When I would make fun of her, she'd just say, "You don't know what I know..."

Agreed. In Honduras, I slept in a shipping container, the nicest accomidations I had for the price! No pretentions, nice folks, skeeters & malaria no extra cost.
