Subject: What kind of restaurant is this?
So....last night, we asked our client to recommend a restaurant (in Wisconsin) and they recommended some place called "Hereford and Hops". We thought, "steak and beer. Cool." Here's the concept of this place: When you go in, you pick out your steak from the butcher counter that they have by the door and YOU COOK IT YOURSELF over some grill they have set up! In addition, they have a salad bar and a potato bar. I said, "What kind of restaurant is this where you have to COOK your own food AND get your own salad and potato? If I wanted to cook, I'd stay home!" Luckily, they had an option where they'd cook it for you. But this whole thing has me puzzled. Seriously. What is the point of going to a restaurant if you have to cook your own food? (and get your own salad and potato?) It did occur to me that maybe it's a "guy thing" since most of the people gathered around the grill were men. What am I missing here?

That's weird. Maybe they are just trying to find a niche with a different idea for a restaurant.

This type of resturant is very common in asian cultures.  You get everything yourself and cook it all yourself.

There was a restaurant like this in Atlanta when I was in highschool. I thought it was kind of cool, not unlike shabu-shabu at a Japanese restaurant, or fondue.

My own surgery. Hmmm liposuction. Maybe I could make myself taller. Extra set of lungs for those serious climbs on my bike. Long legs for running. Gills for swimming. Not a bad Idea...

There is a similar restaurant (Howie G's) here in 'sota that offers the same deal. Went there once, don't think I will go there again. The portions are generous. The NY Strip was as big my forearm, but it tastes awful (I have them cook it for me cus I don't want too fuss with the grill and the smoke). I notice that a lot of guys like it. Just hang out around the grill, talking, watching the meat being cooked. I guess it's a substitute for outdoor BBQ in the dead of winter. I mean, I don't mind cooking my own food at a restaurant, such as Chinese hot pot or Korean BBQ. But the food has to be palatable, for goodness sake.

About 15 years ago, I went to a place like that in Illinois called Alexander's. It was kinda' fun, standing around the open pit, beer in hand, sizzling my steak, chatting.

I was about to make a joke about you being able to drink a beer in a restaurant 15 years ago, but then I realized that I could have been drinking one next to you.

F*&k...

Indeed... it's migrating slowly east.  I know there are a few in Hawaii.  Not sure it'll catch on as well in the U.S.

I do see the benefit though... having worked in the food service industry there is something to be said for not letting strangers handle your food.  And that way the chef's can't screw up your steak.

Champagne-Urbana? Cool!

Hey, McFuzz. Do you do the Effingham Tri? I just bust out laughing when I saw Effingham had a Tri. My goodexhusband is from Sullivan, so I'm somewhat familiar with the area.

There is a place in Memphis called the Butcher shop where you can do that. I always just had them cook it. And by cook it I mean basically make it stop being cold. If it's a good steak I like it rare.

Hey you and Max may be on to something. We could operate, screw it up, then sue ourselves. I'll second the heart/lung transplant. Then I'm going for the bionic legs.

In Texas we have U R Cooks.  It's the same idea you pick your meat and cook it yourself.  Never been to it and not sure that I care to go to it.

My husband was in a similar rest in California.  They went as a work team building event, each person had a specific item to prepare and cook.

If I'm going to cook something give me the comfort of my kitchen.  If I am going out to eat I want full service so I can relax and enjoy the company.

We have a few places like that around here, although they don't seem to be as much work as standing out over a grill.

The one place brings your food out on a hot, flat stone (the stone grill). It's about the size of a plate. Your food has already started cooking when they bring it out and you just cook to perfection and eat it. I love getting the Filet Mignon there, because I can eat when it's at perfection. And, since the stone is flat, I can cut it right there while it's cooking - so, I eat it from a range of really rare to medium rare (of course, you can just take the filet off the stone when it's ready and the whole piece will be cooked the same). I love it. You can cook seafood on it too, but I am always afraid I'll undercook. They season it really well.

Then, there is this place, which is just awesome:

http://www.meltingpot.com/

It's a four-course fondue dinner - good and fun!

And, of course, there are the coffee shops that let you make your own S'mores. But, personally, I don't think a smore's a smore unless you make it yourself anyway.

Happy dining!!!

Good and fun and incredibly expensive...

It was awesome, but go looking to spend a pretty penny.  I spent more there than I did at The Olive in the Bellagio.
