Subject: Ring-tones

Finally broke down and got a new cell phone, one that doesn't come with a bag that weighs ten pounds. This one is the first I had that can accept downloaded ring-tones, which is a pretty cool novelty IMHO. Looked through Cingular's meager selection, narrowed it down to "Blitzkrieg Bop," "London Calling," and " Raw Power" before deciding on "In-a-gadda-da-vida" purely for the schmaltz value. Do have a couple of questions:

  • Are there sites out there to download cheap or free ring-tones, maybe with a more extensive selection?
  • Can you create and download your own ring-tones, say from MP3s or other source files?
  • What's your current or favorite ring-tone?

There is a website where you can change MP3s into ringtones for free. My boyfriend used it for his cell phone. Unfortunately he is at work and I don't know the website, but I will post it as soon as he gets home. I don't know what provider you have, but we just went with cingular and got a gigantic bill for downloading ringtones. It wasn't the ringtones themselves, it was the internet usage fee. So be careful when buying one!

Can you also program specific ringtones to individuals?  That feature is cool.  For example, someone who had an annoying wife - (NOT ME, hi honey) might program their wife's phone to ring with 'Bitch is Back' by Elton John.

Some people take these things too seriously that their ringtone is some kind of 'statement' which is why I have the Sanford & Son theme song as my ringtone.  Everyone just cracks up when they hear it because everyone knows it but how often do you hear it?  Another good one is the opening of Crazy Train.

Alllllll Aboooooooaaaaaarrrrrrddddd!!!!!

That's mine.  I do have to change it when I'm working though.  You should see the looks on the faces in the hospital when that thing goes off.

Well, I don't have a cellphone, but I see banner ads a lot that say if you can pick which one is Lindsay Lohan or punch president Bush, you get a free ringtone. You might wanna try that.

I use a program called bitpim and a USB cable to make my own ringtones and transfer them to my phone. You can also store a phone directory on your computer and then upload everything to your phone. It's pretty cool. The USB cable was about $40 and the program is free. You can check it out here

I do the same thing.  If your phone has bluetooth and you have a laptop or computer with a bluetooth stack, then you can skip the $40 cable and link wirelessly.

it's okay.. i'm ALWAYS cranky before noon.. i find them irritating in a professional setting.. i also find them irritating in inappropriate places.. i.e. church.. weddings.. resturaunts, etc.

(i'm sooooooooooo busted again for hijacking yet another thread)

What about on public transportation? Of course, I find that just listening to some people's conversations while riding the regional rail lines can be either A) Entertaining, B) Disturbing, or C) Erotic. Depends on the conversastion and person, I guess.

Sounds like y'all have a problem with discourteous people, not ringtones. Get over it.

Thanks Jen and Matt for actually answering my question. Doesn't look like that bitpim software is compatible with my phone (MotorolaV557) .

I have a USB cord ordered, $11, www.cellphoneshop.com . Also have Motorola Phone Tools, wondering if that will facilitate creation of ringtones.

If, by discorteous, you mean people that have yet to discover that their phones vibrate, and I don't need to hear the Black Eyed Peas, or Kelly Clarkson, every time some nitwit calls you, then yes. I have a problem with those people.
