I never saw this thread until tonight. I retired in 2008 on my 58th birthday. Since then I've been a recovering couch potato. Discovered Swim, Bike, Run after watching an IMCanada in 2010. Next year I'll be taking part in Challenge Penticton on a relay team.
Since I retired I've learned:
I can live amazingly cheaply,
I don't know how I ever had time to work! I even have difficulty finding time to work in my wood work shop or paint watercolours.
Every other day is Friday,
Coffee is good (never drank it before retiring),
Volunteering is fun,
Backpacking in SEAsia is a lot of fun (and you don't need to go for extensive durations), gives an excuse to visit Yanti (I'd seriously like to do her...International Triathlon - although riding on their streets might be challenging to say the least).
Polar bears are left handed! Who knew?
My wife only allows 20minutes for lunch and no breaks.
I have to force myself to sleep until 7a.m. because I was getting up progressively earlier to get doing things.
I like working with rocks (6 truck loads so far) so my wife can garden.
I need to check out Kayak building.
Having plans and goals are really important. So are friends and keeping your brain and body active. But most of all you'll love being retired. In my S/B/R and events the best thing besides how good it makes me feel are the people I get to meet and encourage or be inspired by.
Have fun.
Great retirement plan. When I grow up, I want to be like you.TW
