Subject: Top Three Things for a Retiree To Do

If you were to be retired on January 1, 2013, what would be the top three things you would want to do that first year of retirement?

I am going to do this. I am dropping out of the gainfully employed workforce a few years younger than I expected, but I am healthy and financially secure.  I do have a few family responsibilities that preclude long trips.  So, I want to do fun stuff that is worthwhile that keeps me in town.

I will probably be regular at Habitat House construction.  J already gives the money for three or four houses a year.  I will tutor math and science at Grady High School in Atlanta.  I will ride bikes and swim a lot.

What would you do with more free time?

Finally finish all the projects around the house that I don't have time for.

Volunteer at the Golden Retriever Rescue.

Probably drink more coffee while I do things I like - work on bikes, build some more kayaks, take more pictures of things.

Learn to sail.

If travel was an option, I would do a lot more diving and camping. If I had grandkids, I would spend a lot more time doing things with them.

K spends his time riding bikes & doing laundry/keeping the house clean. It makes for a happier home.

Tutoring: great idea! You could always stroll over to the Tech athletic dept and volunteer on the grounds crew. That's pretty fun

Volunteer for sure - put all those years of wisdom to good use! And knitting...I'd do a lot of knitting. And I'd also have the most awesome garden ever.

You and Janice are in cahoots on that housecleaning idea.

Congrats on your achievement!  Will be in your shoes one day.

Learn a new hobby: Cooking, photography, clay, golf

Take weekend trips (RV, camping, hotel...mix it up)

Finish all those projects that never seem to get done.

Enjoy your freedom!

I'm not retired yet (I'm turning 60 this year).  My plan at this point is to work until I'm 70, but hopefully easing into more of a part-time situation with my practice over the next few years.

I've been involved with our local Habitat affiliate for about 15 years, so I'll no doubt continue doing that in some role.  I've been on the Board of Directors for the past six years, but am looking forward to going back to be just a "worker bee" and volunteering at job sites in the future.

I also tutor math & science one night a week at a free tutoring program at our church, so will likely continue to do that.

One thing I enjoy but never seem to have the time for are my wooden ship models - some can take years to complete.  I hope to have more time for that in retirement.

Of course I'll be out S/B/R until I physically can't do it anymore.

Mark

Start shopping for my farm house.  I intend to strip one down to the rafters and renovate it in my retirement.

Volunteering - good stuff.

Sleep in until at sunrise each morning.

I never saw this thread until tonight.  I retired in 2008 on my 58th birthday.  Since then I've been a recovering couch potato.  Discovered Swim, Bike, Run after watching an IMCanada in 2010.  Next year I'll be taking part in Challenge Penticton on a relay team.

Since I retired I've learned:

I can live amazingly cheaply,

I don't know how I ever had time to work!  I even have difficulty finding time to work in my wood work shop or paint watercolours.

Every other day is Friday,

Coffee is good (never drank it before retiring),

Volunteering is fun,

Backpacking in SEAsia is a lot of fun (and you don't need to go for extensive durations), gives an excuse to visit Yanti (I'd seriously like to do her...International Triathlon - although riding on their streets might be challenging to say the least).

Polar bears are left handed!  Who knew?

My wife only allows 20minutes for lunch and no breaks.

I have to force myself to sleep until 7a.m. because I was getting up progressively earlier to get doing things.

I like working with rocks (6 truck loads so far) so my wife can garden.

I need to check out Kayak building.

Having plans and goals are really important.  So are friends and keeping your brain and body active.  But most of all you'll love being retired.  In my S/B/R and events the best thing besides how good it makes me feel are the people I get to meet and encourage or be inspired by.

Have fun.

As I was driving into work this Saturday morning, I resolved that one of the first things I would not do is go to work on a beautiful, fall Saturday morning.  This morning, it was that sort of foggy morning, clearing to a clear blue sky fall day in the low 50's.  I was driving to work and pulled up to the last stop light in town heading into rural, hill-valley East Tennessee.  To my right came, four bicyclists in full kit.  Nothing unusual except the ages, all about 70. I recognized two as recent retirees.  I resolve that I will never miss another fall day like this in an office in the pale glare of a computer screen typing words no one will ever read.

Agreed. I"m not wanting a farm house, but I'd like to live in a small home on a lake. I'd love to sit on the dock and veg.
