Subject: What you don't eat

What don't you eat and why?  As athletes, we are supposed to listen to our bodies when we train, but do you do the same when it comes to what you eat and how it makes you feel?

This is not about your taste-buds, but more about food choices based on health.

For me about 90% of the time or more I don't eat/drink:

Soda: Gave it up at the age of 16 after a massive sugar high and crash

Cheese: Gave up at 22, it just doesn't agree with me

Dairy: makes my skin break out

Bread, cereal, rice, oatmeal, pasta and fried food: throws acid reflux into a tailspin

Caffeine: realized I sleep better at night when I stick to decaf

Sugar: Try my best to tackle this one on a daily basis because we all know sugar is not good for us

Sodas: Pretty much never, though I do occasionally allow myself a ginger ale (Reed's or Gosling's only).

Alcohol is the one and only thing that I absolutely never ingest.

I started to write a half dozen other things about processed foods, dinners out a box, fast food, etc... but then I realized that I eat all of that at one time or another.  Heck, I had a slice of cheesecake this morning for breakfast.

Fortunately for me, I have no foods that I *can't* eat. My family says I'm part goat because I can just eat whatever you put in front of me and it doesn't faze me.   I do try to LIMIT the amount of junk, however.

Based on health, nothing. Based on choice, meat except fish and seafood.

Aside from mother's milk and water everything else is an  acquired taste.     Go through survival training and everything is fair game.    Starvation is a wonderful appetite stimulant. Cool

I tend to draw the line at consuming our canine and feline friends.

I almost never drink soda, and I don't really eat fast food. I don't have any allergies or dietary issues, so nothing's off-limits, but I try to stay away from those two things.

No wheat, rye, barley, malt...a.k.a. gluten.  Not one crumb of it in over 3 1/2 years.  I highly recommend it!

I stay away from most vegetables because they taste awful and I don't drink Dairy because it always tastes spoiled to me.

Everything else, I pretty much consume on a weekly basis.  There is no such thing as a food that is off the table.

I'm still a recovering fat boy so my diet choices aren't the best.  I do now rarely drink soda, but I'll still have an occasional sugar binge day.

I just have to work out enough to compensate for my bad diet.

I tried a gluten-free beer once.  It was like eating dairy-free "cheesecake."

To the OP, there's nothing I don't eat that isn't taste bud related.

For health reasons, I mostly avoid grains (especially wheat), sugar, and processed foods.  I limit dairy and legumes.  And I totally abstain from alcohol.

For other reasons, no CAFO meat.

I eat everything in moderation, try to eat fruits and veges over half my plate with every meal but I also listen to my body. I'm generally good about being happy with one little chocolate for my sweet tooth but  I ate too much pie and too many cookies over Thanksgiving and felt really bad for a couple of days after.  Now I'm going sugar free until Christmas. Well not sugar free like reading every label but no extra sweetners, treats or chocolate. I've done the same with coffee and dairy but dropping sweets really seems to have the biggest effect on how I feel.

The other thing I should try to do is cut out salty snacks. I do good all day until 3:30 or so and then I have a snack attack and crave salty snacks like crackers, popcorn or tortilla chips.

Fish.   Well, most fish.  I like the milder types sushi, but cooked fish makes me gag.   Anything with a fishy taste (or smell, ugh!) is OUT.

Pumpkin pie or anything with that same consistency,  OUT.  I almost gag watching someone eat it.

We try to stick to the paleo lifestyle as much as possible, but that's by choice and not due to necessity.

Even if we weren't doing paleo though:

I don't drink pop/soda

I very rarely have cheese because if it's in the house I will eat ALL of it

Pretty much no dairy other than that little bit of cheese I allow myself every once in a while

No bread, rice (other than the occasional sushi night) or pasta

Coffee, however, is a MUST and will be consumed every morning.  I only have one cup - but if I don't get that cup... bad things will happen.

With a 15 year history of colitis, I've figured out that fiber is... uh... EXTREMELY effective on me. Quickly. So I avoid pretty much everything that's high in fiber:

Whole wheat. In most any form. Bread, cereals, oatmeal, whatever.

Apples.

Any greens-based salad. Jello salad? Bring it on. Tossed salad? Toss it out the window.

Corn. Though funny enough, corn CHIPS are just fine.

Chili. Well, I'll do it in moderation.

You get the idea.

Brussels sprouts. Just can't stand the flavor. Ditto coffee.

Not by necessity but choice I try to stick to "real food". It is a large time commitment since this mean I cook many things from scratch and things we do buy from the store I try to stick with items with limited number of ingredients that I recognize. I eat meat but in limited portions and not everyday. Do I think it is worth the time/effort/money? Yes. I feel better, my husband dropped a few pounds that with his condition dr's said would be near impossible and my fairy extreme ADHD son has shown responded well to the changes.

Ha - I had a bowl of stone ground oatmeal with chopped apples, nuts and ground flax seed for breakfast and a lettuce salad for lunch!

I have a terrible time with beans though. Things like hummus or chilli make me absolutely miserable.
