Subject: Anyone been shot?

With all of the talk of guns I'm just curious if anyone has been shot and what it felt like.  (Okay maybe because I just had a minor procedure and the painkiller is wearing off and I started to think that it was hurting - then realized I was a total wuss.)

So, anyone been on the receiving end of a gun?  Where did you get hit?  What was recovery like?

Please take my mind off the 3 stitches in my butt.

No.  Because, how can we be sure it wasn't an icicle that fell down from the garage?

How about a pellet gun... it did really hurt.

for how it feels with a bullet proof vest on, wrap a thick, woven, blanket around you twice, tightly. Have a buddy haul off and hit you as hard as he can with a baseball bat. That's about right.

For outside the vest coverage, take an icepick, put it on the stove for a minute and jab yourself then you'll have an idea.

You lay on your stomach for a couple weeks wondering if it's more embarrassing to just pee on the bed or TRY to get up to go potty.

    Yes.  Sort of.

    It hurt - a lot.

I got hit - sort of near where you got your stitches.  Just a bit higher up.  Yeah.  A real "manly" scar.  NOT!

Recovery was 2 weeks until I could walk again, a month in the hospital, 6 months until life returned to "normal'.

    ... I wouldn't recommend it for anyone.

    Never shot, yet.

I've been stabbed three times, though... does that count?

just painball. nice scar on my arm from getting bunkered in the snake and nailed right above arm guard onto bare skin - broke the skin and the bruise covered my whole deltoid.

routinely looked beat up from paintball practice - but no real bullets ever

I took a round in the side while in Iraq...lead poisoning (as we refer to it) SUCKS....not a fan nor do you want to know what it feels like! 19 staples across my abdomen. Luckily we had a crack staff nearby who fixed me right up...I was out for about 2 months before I returned to my unit...I was pretty hyped on adrenaline, anger, rage, and shock so I didn't really feel it until about 20 minutes after the fact. The first few minutes I thought I had a really bad side stitch but then things died down and I looked down...don't ever look down!

I'm not one for taking lots of medication but I made an exception for about 3 weeks after the fact. Several years later and I often forget it even happened and then I look down!

Shot at/towards - 2x, had a gun pulled on me (but no trigger pulled) 1x. I grew up in a semi-rough town, but for the most part getting into trouble when I was young mostly meant you risked getting into a fight. It wasn't until I was in my senior year of HS that guns were a real threat. In the span of a year or so, I was involved in 3 incidents. One resulting in a friend getting shot in front of me (he survived) the others just near misses or damn scary moments.

That was > 20 years a go and I can remember the details like it was yesterday. Hope to never have to revisit that type of situation ever again.

Getting stabbed is about the same.  In '96 I got knifed once in the lower back, one in the left side (below the ribs) and one just below the left chest, glanced off a rib and popped the upper lobe of the left lung while breaking up a bar fight. Dude used a freaking steak knife. Felt like a hard punch with a burning sensation in the center of it... other than that, it just felt like REALLY tight muscle stitches/cramps/knots.  Oddly, without even having seen the knife, I knew exactly what had happened the instant the first one went in.  It was kinda weird. Everyone around me was freaking out a LOT more than I was, but I also hadn't really looked at myself. +1 for never look down.  The first couple years, I HATED being in crowds or really busy places.  Today, I typically completely forget about it until I see or feel one of the scars.

Shot, no; rounds  taken by body armor don't count.     Shrapnel, yes, to the face and knee.     Experience and recovery is analogous to any type of recovery from traumatic injury.

Well I served... just not for this country.

And of all the combat experience, the injury ironically wasn't in combat.  'Twas in a pear field and courtesy of a Hezbollah Kautusha rocket.

UGH! More on this - why did he stab you 3 times, did he get convicted of attempted murder? Up here guns are rare so knives tend to be the weapon of choice. I've only had once instance where a friend I was with was "stabbed" but it was a dull jack-knife and didn't go through his denim jacket.

    BB only, not bad.

Although, my brother shot my other brother with a BB gun and we then pinned him down to try to extricate the BB with my Swiss Army knife.  Didn't go so well.  He screamed, there was blood and we had to take him to the doctor.

***  Many thanks to those who served!  ***
