Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My membership had expired and I was torn about renewing it. I've been a paying member for several years and have enjoyed much of what BT has to offer; training plans, articles, online coaching, and a sometimes great online community of fellow triathletes. Lately though, I've seen a shift in the attitude and demeanor of the forums, particularly in COJ. Seems to be more snarkiness, divisiveness, and negativity than I can ever recall. It really gave me pause, but in the end the features available to paid members outweigh the negative vibe. For now. I'm sure most don't give a red rats patootie but I figured I'd just put it out there. Ok, I'm off to start a flip turn thread. At least the TT arguments are more edifying that the COJ arguments. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Surprisingly, I share your feelings about COJ, specifically the TAN threads. While I jump in there every once in awhile, it has become a huge click (sp?) not not as inviting as it once was. The over the top flirting gets old and the 3 page discussions on what to eat are laughable. So the easiest way to not get involved is to stay away and let them have their fun. I think the number of political threads are simply related to the number of very hotly debated political topics out in the world the last several months. The election was very heated with people on both sides of the issues and then taxes and debt were the hot button issue with people having very diverse opinions. Then you mix in the gun tragedy and subsequent political action that's resulting it just seems that everyone is arguing, but I think it's more that there is just a lot of controversial stuff to talk about. I for one LOVE the COJ political discussions because we have such a diverse group of people in the Tri community. Most other places I visit have a "like minded" membership so there's rarely any opposing viewpoints, but on BT we have those opposing viewpoints and I learn a lot. Heck, just today my opinion has swayed somewhat with the women in combat thread. Yes, at times people can get a little heated, but as a general rule I feel people are very respectful of each other here. |

Personally, I don't blame BT for the people on it. I ignore them or the topics that turn ugly. The years of advice, the connections I have made, the training plans, the logs... It's worth the couple bucks to make sure stays around. (to me) |

![]() | ![]() Your complaints will still be complaints whether you pay or not, no? I'd look more at what you get for paying (no ads, access to more training plans, coaching, etc.) because there will always be jerks. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I let mine lapse. I think it is somewhat hypocritical that some people's behaviors will get them banned in TT while the same behavior is tolerated in COJ. |

I'd look more at what you get for paying (no ads, access to more training plans, coaching, etc.) because there will always be jerks. You're right, and that's sort of what pushed me to renew. It was either that or just go away altogether. I am learning to stay out of certain threads and to avoid certain posters, but I never used to have to do that. Maybe the jerks are jerkier than they used to be. I get that there are some hot issues right now, but there have been hot issues in the past too. The Presidential election season in 2008 was potentially more divisive than this time around but that didn't manifest here then like it has now. Sure, there were plenty of debates and disagreements, but they had a more civil tone. Or maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety. |

![]() | ![]() What I've found in many situations is that I will actually AGREE with most of what someone is saying, but their delivery makes me want to punch them in the face. You don't have to get all douchey, aggressive, or personal to get a point across. Which is what a lot of folks seem to be resorting to these days. Some site have an "Ignore Poster" feature where you can opt out of seeing posts from certain users. That would solve so many things here, IMO. Edited by lisac957 2013-01-24 1:04 PM |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Having been around here almost from the start, I can tell you the "tone" of the forum goes through cycles as members come and go. I think the moderators have done a good job over the years in maintaining a decent level of civility, though that doesn't guarantee there won't be a degree of snarkiness at times. As always, one solution is to just walk away if something here upsets you. At my advanced age, I occasionally sense that I am being a bit of a curmudgeon about things and that's usually the time to take a break from the BT forums, or at least from COJ. I've had disagreements or differences of opinion with certain individuals or the moderators a couple of times in the last nine years, but have always been able to work things out in private when need be. I miss at lot of folks from the "old days" who are long gone, but we always seem to have a steady stream of newbies who have lots to contribute. I'm still glad to be here. Mark

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I took particular offense to this.... "Really? Nick "I guess I have to say it. I'm not going to be the Alabama coach." Saban makes you proud? That guy makes my skin crawl." That snarkiness, divisiveness and negativity....gets me too
I tend to agree with tuwood. Even though I've only been here a few years, I think part of the issue is just a sign of the times and the polarity of the issues, being an election year, etc. I enjoy some of the discussion, because it allows other views that I may not typically find in other places, especially since there are folks from all over the country on BT, and outside the US. I can't comment on TAN, as I don't spend much time there. Maybe I should. Three page discussions about eating sound interesting... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Part of the issue might be seasonal as well. Over the years, I have noticed that tension seems to run higher in the winter when people are cooped up inside. The tone tends to improve a bit when spring rolls around. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I like some of the gritty factor you get in coj, good thing about it is you can participate as much or as little as you want. I view it as entertainment for a few min here and there and don't take anything that is said too seriously. I do find it interesting how much time some actually do spend here online posting 10,000 times per week and 9,000 of them are in TAN or singles threads. Just a parting smart a$$ comment...being online 24/7 doesn't seem to be working for some of the singles so try unplugging for a few and get out and meet some people! ![]() |
