Subject: If you were Mitch Kupchak (Lakers GM), what would you do?

Lakers just dropped to 17-25.  Meaning they would need to go 24-16 (.666 win pct) the rest of the season just to get back to .500...and even that wouldn't guarantee them a spot in the playoffs.

Juding by the moral of the team, especially Kobe, it doesn't look like this team has a run in them to make the playoffs despite all of their talent.  So...something needs to change.  I think Kupchak would be an idiot to think this exact same lineup will somehow gel next year into a championship contender.  Howard has only one year left on his contract and it is uncertain if he wants to resign in LA.  Gasol is still involved in trade rumors.  Given D'Antoni's contract...he would "seem" safe for one more year...but you never know.  LeBron could be available in 2014?

The Lakers are a win now team.  If you were Kupchak...what's you're move?

FYI, I'm not a Lakers fan...I just find their situation very interesting.  The only move I see is to dump Howard.  He's not the answer, especially long term.  He never lived up to his potential in Orlando and the dramas he caused there his last 2 seasons hasn't changed since moving to the Lakers.  Howard is definately a franchise player...just not for a franchise that wants to win championships.

This morning's radio said the average 8th seed win record in the west has been 47-48, meaning the Lakers would have to go 31-9 to finish out the season to make the playoffs.  Ain't gonna happen

I agree to dump Hpoward, but I'd also like to see Gasol go.  Can't do both right now.

Frankly, Howard can't figure out a pick and roll.  If you're going to accept him like that then you have to dump Nash because you're basically giving up half a defender with him.

But I think they're better off getting someone who can work with Nash.

Howard was 0-4 with 2 boards last game (12 mins) and 2-5 the game before that in 30 mins.  Wtf.  I don't care if Kobe is hoarding the ball, you should be at least getting some points from offensive rebounds if you're Howard's size.  Lazy.  Gasol outrebounds him.  Send Howard packing and get someone with some competitive fire.

1) Move the Lakers to a state with lower taxes and thereby increase salaries without affecting the actual bottom line.

2) Trade Pau Gasol because he doesn't have an "L" at the end of his first name.

No chance Lebron will move to LA unless he's made whole.  Cost of living differential/tax differential.  He'll be hitting his downward progression age so it's unlikely they'd make him whole.  I think he'll keep his talents in South Beach.  But you can be sure he won't have an ESPN special called "The Decision part II."

I'm in a minority(alone) but I think the season can still be salvaged - not much downside in saying that, because it can't get much worse/acrimonious. The team has played at a fraction of the sum of the parts but no matter how you sliced it, the roster does have some super-star level talent and it always takes time for the playing habits of stars to adjust when they have to share the ball. Clearly, the expectation that this group would coalese just like that was fantasy, but eventually guys settle into their roles...Changing coaches set this process back by at least a month, so that one is on the Busses. Again, I think the team can win as presently constructed and patience is their best friend..still.

As for Howard - he's a one of a kind talent and has been the best big man in the league for years. 3x Defensive Player of the Year, 4x Rebounding titles, 5x All NBA First Team, etc.. He hasn't recovered from back surgery and he's playing hurt. I'm not a fan particularly but there's no denying a healthy Dwight H. plays a lot better than this guy. If I'm Kupchak? I re-sign Howard the second the season is over. At this point, I think he'll(Howard) do anything to salvage his reputation.

In the meantime, it might be too late for the playoffs but some momentum over the back half could really clear the air.

Oh yeah and remind me again: why did L.A. make a grab for D'Antoni instead of rehiring Phil Jackson? Tongue out

He hasn't recovered from back surgery and he's playing hurt.

Then at the very least he shouldn't be starting, or if it's bad enough, he should be inactive.

Update his resume?

There is no real good answer. At this point the trade value for Howard can't be much. The only thing in his favor is that he is truly a BIG man. He can't hit a foul shot and he seems to be hurt often. And he is a coaches nightmare. So, if someone wants him, unload him quick.

It seems like the NBA is "system" driven. With that said, if D'Antoni is the coach and his system is your team direction, you have to find players that fit. So commit to it and stop waffling and letting the inmates run the asylum. Kupchak is the GM, so he needs to either drive that bus or park and get off.  As someone once said, "Lead, Follow, or get the heck out of the way".

Jim Buss doesn't like him.  Plain and simple.  He wants to move on and put his own stamp on the team.  Meaning return to Phil is out

After his last 18 mos in Orlando, I think he rushed back to rehab his image but whether that's true or not, lazy is not how I'd describe him.

And L.A. snagged him from Orlando.

Hm this all sounds familiar
