REVOLUTION3 Triathlon
88F / 31C
Overcast
Total Time = 6h 11m 49s
Overall Rank = 285/592
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 33/55
Pre-race routine:

Went to bed early and was asleep at 9:30. Woke up at 2:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. It was pouring out early .The worst part though was I woke up with a realy sore back from the bad. That coupled with having bad body position on the swim due to the contact and straining to spot really cost me later.
Event warmup:

400 yard easy swim.
Swim
  • 43m 22s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

With the warm water temp my goggles kept fogging up and with the chop and high level of contact it became impossible to spot.I stopped 5 times to clear the fog and could have done so more.
What would you do differently?:

Use anti-fog. know the course better.
Transition 1
  • 05m 31s
Comments:

I really don't know what took me so long I felt like moved along and there was a good distance from the beach but I've done longer and steeper faster.
What would you do differently?:

Move.
Bike
  • 3h 05m 1s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.15 mile/hr
Comments:

First three miles I had to get my HR down. I did a good job being patient and doing so. My back really seized up the second half so I couldn't push. My average HR from mile 24 to the finish was only about 143 and near the end I had one at 140.
What would you do differently?:

Sleep in a good bed and not have such a bad swim.
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Highlight of my race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 15m 13s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

After mile 2 I knew I wasn't PR'ing the run so given my back was in bad shape and my ITBS was acting up and it was hot as hell I decided to just dial it back and not get injured. My average HR was only 155 for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Get healthy.
Post race
Warm down:

Hopped in the ice bath and had a bowl of ziti.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not getting in enough training post Disney trip, ITBS issues, bad bed, back issues, ITBS issues, heat.

I know going in that the trip to Florida with the family and the ITBS issues when I got home were really going to hurt me but this was an epic faile. I had a personal worst for everything minus T2.

Event comments:

The swim setup wasn't good. The Olympic and HIM buoys were too close and blended making it confusion with all the contact and fogging. The roads whille not bad had cracked cementr for miles and miles. I felt like the bike was shuddering for forever.

That was one rough swim out there.  Yes, the buoys were a little strange and blended.  I think they pulled in the HIM buys at some point before the Oly swims went off.

Those roads were rough on the bike.  And the hills on the run just plain hurt.

Good job in less than ideal circumstances.

I raced the Oly and the pavement quality really bothered my back too. I was feeling bad for all the HIMers being half-drowned on the swim, shaken to bits for 56 miles on the bike and then having to run in the peak of that heat! Great job!

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

Now, for the last 20 years I’ve always though that jogging seemed about as interesting as watching paint dry, and you know what? That’s how it turned out to be.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
