Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I didn't see this posted anywhere else, sorry if it was. There's been discussions before about the etiquette of passing someone in the finish chute. But when you're a pro with money on the line, there's no way I would have pulled up short the way this guy does. I would have plowed right through his arm and taught him a lesson that the race isn't 70.29 miles. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Shouldn't he get a penalty for impeding the other racer's progress? He clearly pushed him back and grabbed his gear with his left hand. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have mixed thoughts. Yes....go hard until the end. It's not over until the finish line is crossed. However, it was obvious that guy 1 had a huge lead, wanted to celebrate, give 'love' to the fans there that support....he obviously had the race won and would have beaten guy 2 by at least 30-45 seconds had he just ran across the finish line. It's not like they were neck-in-neck sprinting down the chute and the guy who held a .3 second lead pulled up 20 feet short to high-five people. #2 could have easily let up a bit (as there was no one behind him) and let #1 have his moment of victory. |

In race mode, I'm not sure I could even "pull up," and that close to the finish, fach that--it's on. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree with this...the story of the tortoise and the hare could be applied in this scenario...the Hare keeps stopping to take care of stuff while the tortoise plods along and who won in the end...if you are dumb enough to celebrate your win before you cross the line and someone beats you, then its your own damn fault...I'd have had no sympathy for him if he had lost |

![]() | ![]() I bet that guy doesn't start celebrating before crossing the finishing line again. He never would have stopped me with that little chicken wing - of course he would have had to be celebrating for several hours to let me beat him. |

I'm sort of in the same boat. I don't have a clear cut "ruling" on this. What I particularly DON'T like is how racer 1 looked to block/push racer 2. Maybe they were friends and racer 2 knew he was beat and was just racing for time and wanted to scare racer 1? I'm probably similar to racer 2 (and consistent with my opinion about racing down the chute). In this case, I'm beat, racer one is showing appreciation to the crowd. I give it to him. If I catch him 100 feet out? I'm racing. If we enter the chute neck and neck? I'm racing. BUT, there is a reason cyclists and other racers keep checking over their shoulder even when it seems no one can catch you, to avoid that. Same reason you don't start showboating with the football after a long run before crossing into the end zone. |

Heck, I've gone full-tilt passing people in a sprint tri at the end. Nothing unclassy about it. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've seen enough finishes where the racer simply looks behind before entering the chute-- no-brainer if you're going to celebrate in the chute and care about being caught. |

If you are in second place and you round the corner with 20 yards or so to go to the finish and you see the first place guy in front of you hamming it up and you have a legitimate shot of passing him because he's not paying attention you'd just let up? Second place guy could have easily passed first place guy right at the end, and I agree that first place guy should have been penalized for interference. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I watched that and the thing that I don't get is that the guy was in first looks back to check to see where others might be. I think you can see second place guy coming up, didn't he see him? Also, reading Iron War, Dave Scott said he never understands why people high five in the finishing shoot. Its a race, and the mission is to get to the finish line as fast as possible, even if the placing is determined. I think Dave Scott would have blown by that guy for the win. |

As for not seeing the 2nd position guy, perhaps the finishing route snaked/arced so that one couldn't see more than 20 or 30 feet behind? Just guessing. My personal opinion on the premature high-fivers and hams is it comes down to ego. The best of the best typically know exactly where they stand in relation to personal bests, course records, etc. For them, it's almost a subconscious "yeah I won, and I could have won by even more if I wanted to, but this makes me look appreciative to fans...and when I'm asked about my time I can tell myself I chose to pull up at the end, and could have had a faster time if I wanted to..." |

I think the appreciation for the fans is an important point. Triathlon spectating is not the most exciting experience, so the fans do appreciate the acknowledgement--even from AG'ers. |

Supersonicus Idioticus ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nothing wrong here in my eyes. Let's remember, these guys are exhausted and pumped on endorphins. So #2 probably wasn't thinking too clearly about classiness, but it was good he slowed down right before the finish line. I would have done what #1 did: say "oh @#$" and scramble in front of #2. I don't think it is wrong to expect not to be attacked in the final chute, just like the final stage of the TdF, so the impeding is acceptable in my eyes. And good on the race director for acknowledging that #1 was the winner and did not DQ him. |

"attacked"? You mean, someone racing? In the finish chute of a race? That's not a reasonable expectation? |
