Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok local peeps, Motivated for my first 1/2 Ironman but on the fence about which one? Timberman is mid August which I like because of Lake Wini and best time for my teachers schedule for Max training. Pumpkinman because of great feedback I have heard and more training time Patriot half also have heard great feedback about I live in Hudson and trying not to have to get a hotel room, incur great travel costs (limited budget!) All are local enough and sell out quickly and registration opens soon. Feedback ?! |

New user ![]() | ![]() I had the same dilema this past year and chose Pumpkinman. It was a great race and I'd highly recommend it. I was a spectator at Timberman so I have a little familiarity with that race as well-a major difference is the field size. Timberman has around 2,000 racers while Pumpkinman was between 500-600 or so. I preferred the smaller race for my first but that is a personal preference, others may like the hustle and bustle of a large event. The pre-race logistics were also much easier at Pumpkinman-getting in and out of Timberman on race day was a bit of a nightmare. One other advantage to Pumpkinman is the post race thanksgiving feast which was fantastic! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Patriot would be my recommendation. Fantastic event, very well run, 600 or so entrants, fun atmosphere, and a good course that is challenging but not going to beat you up. I'm going back for my 3rd time next year. Registration opens on 10/1/13. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello, Patriot is a great time of year (June), fast, and well run by Mark Walter. If you need more time to get in shape, race Timberman in August. Better yet do both this will give you a chance to learn from one and race the next. Best of luck, Mark |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did both Patriot & Timberman this year. Very different races. For a first, Timberman would be fun if you are a confident cyclist. First & last 12 miles seem to be all uphill. The middle is pretty flat. FUN run with lots of crowd participation. Big race with 2300 racers, but you get the full WTC race experience. Patirot is more the local race flavor, but as said above, well run, fun, and welcoming for a first 70.3 |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the feedback everyone! Actually doing Patriot and Pumpkinman sounds good, have to see about cost etc.. I don't enjoy cold water so much, can anyone tell me how chilly Patriot was as its mid June & Pumpkinman as its early September...yes I have a wetsuit and still a lil wimpy about the temps!!! Joy |

New user ![]() | ![]() The water at Pumpkinman was quite warm this year; I believe they stated the temp was 74 on race morning. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Joy- We rode together once from the stow library! Patriot was my first half. I am slow (placed exactly halfway in my age group) and by the time I got to the run the aid stations had run dry. Well, not exactly dry- they still had water but you had to drink if from the gallon jug at the aid station. Nothing like sharing a water bottle with hundreds of strangers! No cups to carry it with you. No oranges, coke, or pretzels, etc. like they had for the faster athletes. It seems to me they've been doing it long enough to plan for cup usage accordingly. That said- I hope to do it next year. No need for hotel, etc. Registration opens tomorrow. Either way, good luck! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Heather! Good feedback, try not to be slow is what I hear you saying! I actually am thinking of doing both Patriot mid June and Pumpkinman in early September. Finish the first w/some dignity and having learned things, improve for the second...I've got the fever!!! Thanks Joy |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, I'm the RD for the Patriot Half. Thanks for considering our race and for the kind words from other BT members. Water temperature for the Patriot Half has historically been in the low 70s. The exception was the 2013 race where it was in the low 60s due to rain we got in the days leading up to the event. That was the lowest temp we've seen in the 7 years we have put on this race. So, most likely, temps for the 2014 race will be in the low 70s... but you never know. As for running out of the cups on the run... yes, I hate to say it, but that happened temporarily at this year's race. When it happened we took action and re-stocked the aid stations, but I know from the feedback I received this was an issue at the 2013 race. I guarantee it won't be at the 2014 race. Fyi, we are tracking to sell out by the end of the year and the early bird price expires 10/31/13. |

I've heard great things about your events and I've signed up for the Patriot (as a relay) and will likely do the Olympic in VT. And to the OP I signed up for the Pumpkiman as my first (solo) him. see you there! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Update!! I registered for the Aquabike for Patriot in June, that should help me get ready for Pumpkinman in September! Still leaving plenty of time in between to enjoy a couple of my favorite local sprints. Timberman seems like a hassle with traffic...etc. I prefer a non branded race anyway Good feedback!! Thanks Joy |
