Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've read various post from locals that 'predict' the water temp will be 72 come race morning. Well we'll find out in just over three weeks! |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In the 6 years of the event water temp was only an issue one year, when the race was held 2 weeks later in November it was a chilly 62, a few of the sleeveless older athletes had to be pulled out from the full. They also didn't have a great current that year if I remember correctly.I think it will be around 70 give or take a few. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did the half that year and wore a sleeveless tri wetsuit. When I made the turn from the ICW towards the dock I couldn't kick because the cold water temps were causing my calves to cramp. I had to just drag my legs behind behind me. It was cold for sure! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like people will start to wear the neoprene caps under their race specific swim caps when the temp starts to dip below 70, anyone have experience with needing the extra warmth for your head? Also, noticed in the athlete event information packet that you are basically going to lose any clothes that you show up to the swim with since there is no pre-event gear bag. Guess I better dig up some old rags! Edited by HercDriver 2013-10-05 6:06 AM |

![]() | ![]() If you dont have any rags lying around you could always hit up goodwill for a cheap sweatshirt & sweatpants you will only wear that morning- although for the time being it looks like the low will still be in the 50s in late October. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In my view a neoprene cap is not necessary until the low 60's at least. Did White lake half at 54 deg this year with no cap or booties and I was fine. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Doubling up on regular swim caps also adds a small but noticeable amount of warmth. That's what I'll do if the water or air is chillier than I'd like. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good idea on just doubling up on the regular caps if need be, thanks! |

Goodwill is a good idea, probably have something there I can use. So it looks like we take a bus from downtown to the beach transition area and then another bus to the start right? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Definitely ready to go, I have waited 2 years for this! I feel good about my training, but feel I could have run a little more. Had some injuries, but was able to bike a lot. Hopefully the all the biking translates well... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have done this race 2 times and it is one of my favorites. I'm doing the full this year as a relay team (bike portion). I've never done a relay before so it will be a new experience. I'm so excited for my team. We have a pretty interesting back story that I'm sure nobody cares about, but I'm going to tell it anyway. ![]() My team is made up of myself and 2 cousins (by marriage). Those 2 cousins are brothers who are in their 50's. They just met each other for the first time about 3 years ago. The older brother was given up for adoption because his mother (my aunt by marriage) was only 15 years old when she had him. I'll spare you the rest of the details but it's such a great feeling to be able to connect with family through triathlon. The son who was put up for adoption was a triathlete before he was reunited with his biological family. So that brings up the question, is it nature or nuture that creates triathletes? Go Team Sink, Crash, Limp!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() is there anything wrong with bringing your own sharpie and BM'ing yourself? |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is my personal goal not to BM myself at any time on race day. ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Herc, if you see us, be sure to say hello. I'm doing the bike leg and I'll be the only one on a Quintana Roo with Flashpoint 60's that have red and silver LC105 lettering on the aero portion of the wheels. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We swam the channel yesterday evening. Not to have anyone concerned, but it was flipping cold when I first jumped in. I wear a sleeveless suit and managed to warm up after a few minutes but brrrrr..... Water temp ocean side is currently 73 degrees. Definitely think it's going to be cooler than last year for what it's worth. Current was cranking though, so that was fun :-) |

Current was cranking though, so that was fun :-) What's this that I'm hearing about jellies? Someone mentioned to me at masters after doing Swim the Loop last weekend and now someone has posted about it on ST. Thoughts? Time to order the Sea Safe? Does that stuff even work? |
|
![]() ![]() |
Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't vouch for Swim the Loop since I didn't do it, but yes, I know of a few friends who got stung during the event. They should be going away since it's getting cooler. We didn't see any last night or the week before, but they were out this summer. I own SeaSafe and *think* it works. I put some one last time I heard about jelly fish in the area and only got stung on my back (where I didn't apply). It's cheap enough that even if it's placebo effect I'll use it. Better than the alternative. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was in the water at Wrightsville last weekend and there were a few jellis, but not the nasty ones. A kid in our group got stung and didnt even cry- just said ouch, a jellyfish stung me and that was that. With the water getting colder it is likely to become less of an issue. Other comments: I did B2B when it was 62-64 water temp and didn't need a silicone cap, like qrkid mentioned. I like the option of doubling-up with a regular cap though so take an extra that you can always discard if needed. I was happy I had a full suit that year though. When I was in the water at wrightsville last weekend it was fine...chilly but fine without even a wetsuit. In two more weeks it should be just about perfect for a nice fresh wetsuit swim. Good luck to everyone doing it. I am not racing this year but will be down there to cheer you on...I may have a beer or two while I am doing that ;-) Enjoy the race though ;-) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been surfing the past few days in a spring suit or with just a neoprene top and it hasn't been bad. I think a sleeveless suit is going to be the best call for race day. It was chilly yesterday in a spring suit but that was due to wind while sitting up on the board. |

Yep I have been bodyboarding this week and had a springsuit on. The only reason I wore the springsuite was because of air temp and wind at 7am. I would have been fine without a suite if the windchill while waiting for sets was not so low. |
