Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi. I am going to California for Ragnar So Cal in April. The race ends in San Diego, by the Embarcadero marina. This is near the bridge to Coronado. After the race my friend and I (both female, mid-30s) are going to spend two nights in San Diego. I have NO idea where to stay. We like to walk to restaurants, it should be safe/clean, but we don't want to spend a ton. Which part of town should I be looking in? We don't have to stay right by the Marina but we'd like to be in an area that is easy to get around without a car once we get there. We're flying out of San Diego. Any advice? P.S. I am willing to entertain areas nearby, doesn't have to be San Diego proper. Edited by BikerGrrrl 2014-02-04 10:00 AM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gaslamp district is awesome - lots of reasonably priced options, too. It's downtown-ish. If you want the beach, it's not your best option, but it'll likely be cool in April. Pacific Beach isn't too expensive, lots of restaurants, but a young crowd. La Jolla is a little more expensive, but prettier and nicer. You won't need a car in any of these places, either. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() san diego is a town that you really need a car to get around in. what do you want to do during your 2 day stay? last time i went there i stayed in hillcrest - great restaurants, right on balboa park, so a decent walk from the zoo. but, you have to drive for nightlife, beach, and coronado. gaslamp is fun for restaurants and partying - and the padres play there now if you want to catch a baseball game. so if you DON'T have a car, you should stay near what you want to see. if it were me, i would stay on coronado if i couldn't go anywhere else. nothing in san diego compares. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I like gaslamp. There's a couple of very cool hotels. Hardrock, Westgate (old elegance), Kimpton hotels, a Westin, Marriott. Hotwire usually gets you something around $100 for 4 star. Coronado is very nice, but you're not going to find lodging out there except for the Coranado itself ($$$). You could stay in Old Town; there's a really nice Best Western on top of the hill and a sub-par Courtyard. Stay away from Hotel circle. Just blech.... If you go to La Jolla, La Valencia is absolutely stunning. I got upgraded to the $900 a night ocean front suite from a $100 base room since they were doing some remodeling or their base rooms. Woke up to the sound of seals playing on the beach outside. Edited by pitt83 2014-02-04 2:16 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm learning that Gaslamp is the right "area" for us, although I am not able to find anything in our price range. Even with Hotwire... I ended up booking a hotel in Old Town, the Best Western, which appears on the map to be conveniently located. My hope is we can use the Trolley, etc, to get where we need to be. I did find a pretty good option on Coronado in our price range, but it seems a bit small/quiet for two gals-about-town. We don't have a lot of expectations since we'll have about 1.5 days total. So, just walking around, shopping, eating, etc. I can always change the registration, though, if another good idea crops up. Edited by BikerGrrrl 2014-02-04 2:46 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That Best Western is a great hotel. Nice views off of the balcony, clean rooms. You can exit at the bottom straight into old town, which is a fun 1/2 day to spend anyway. The trolley is at the other end of old town (maybe 1/2 a mile) and goes into Gaslamp. OldTown is fun: Fred's is a must go to. Beware of the bandalero tequila shot girls.... As tempting as it might seem: Don't go to Tijuana. It's not safe. Just don't... And yeah, don't worry, that's not a part of Mexico I need to visit (again). |
