Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel like the Beginner Triathlete name needs a revamp.... many of the visitors and users of the site are not beginners. I have been racing for over 10 tens and I am only 28 and I feel like such a newbie when I come on to this site. I think a new fresh name is needed as the sport continues to expand and grow. Anything else think so? |

Anything else think so? Well... I found this site, lurked, joined, learned, and (hopefully) taught all because I was a beginner triathlete 4 years ago. If the site was nothingbutexperttriathlete.com I likely wouldn't be typing this today. Edited by Sous 2014-07-28 2:54 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So when do the "not beginners" get kicked out? I think Ron (and others on this site) have done a great job making BT a beginner friendly site even as some of us have been around for 8-10 years. |

![]() I think the BT name fits to attract new users. Once people get comfortable with BT, I don't think those people really care what the name of the site is called. It's not like being a member of BT prohibits you from getting faster, racing AG nationals/worlds, or Kona. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This has been discussed many times, and the owners/admins of the site have always expressed that they want to attract and serve beginners and they feel that the name as-is accomplishes that goal best. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will likely always be a beginner. If there were nobody but beginners here....the forums wouldn't be all that helpful. It's the non-beginners that can help set the beginners like me on the path to being a competent and improving beginner. As a beginner, my contributions are pretty limited to my own experiences, questions, and the stuff that everyone else takes for granted. And that would get boring and repetitive....and then you've got a ghost town that doesn't attract anyone. Including beginners. I think the things that do get overlooked is the extreme beginner and first-timer stuff. Like, "Will I be able to pee during the race?" The stuff that people who've done many of these all take for granted. Most of the races I've done are really good about referring to the USAT rules and somewhere they generally include a link to the most commonly broken rules. When other friends of mine start getting into it and they ask me questions, the things I find myself telling them over and over again is: "There will be portapotties. Hopefully on the course or right next to the transition. Email the race director, or ask others who've done it." "Yeah, it's totally OK to use a hybrid." "Yeah, some people will hang on to the wall of the pool, or stand in the shallows and take a breather on the swim. Totally OK, just finish." "Yeah, some people will walk some on the run. Totally OK. Just finish." "Yeah, sorry. I can't share my mp3 playlist with you. Hate to break it to you....No headphones. Generally means no music." "Make sure you know where you can get on/off the bike. If you can, check out the transition area the day before at packet pickup, someone will be wandering around who knows or did it last year or has done a million of them and will gladly tell/show you." "Here's the link to the most commonly broken rules from USAT that was on the website for one of the races I did." I think race directors could do a little better FAQ for 1st timers. Especially when they bill the race as first-timer friendly. In addition to some of that stuff...I'd like the race directors to have a little FAQ on transition setup and how to rack your bike. It seems a little different at each one I've been to.....with some commonalities of course. I know a lot of the other transition area related stuff is common sense courteousness, but they might get better results if they did that. Particularly with the mount/dismount issues I see. Still, there will be people who don't read it. Edited by jhaack39 2014-07-28 4:44 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been on BT almost 10 years. I don't think the name helps as our sport matures, but I think what has hurt BT the most was the update about 1.5 years ago where the method to connect with BT friends became much more cumbersome. Now most of my long term BT friends no longer log their workouts or participate much in this website. The vibe is vastly different than 2 or 4 years ago. ST keeps going strong so why has the feel and activity level BT changed so much with less posts and less action in blogs? |

Agree, the redesign, made the social aspect harder aside from what happens right here on the forums |

ST keeps going strong so why has the feel and activity level BT changed so much with less posts and less action in blogs? I'm one of those who used to log everything on BT, then stopped completely. It wasn't so much that the redesign screwed things up, it was that the redesign couldn't keep up with what other logging sites are offering. For me, Strava is 5 million times better than BT for what I want and am looking for in terms of logging (power analysis, maps, easy to search history) and social aspects (friends, kudos, comments, or just checking out routes that other people train on). Not to mention I can do mass uploads with a few clicks rather than manually uploading one workout at a time. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You had to figure this would morph into a "back in the day" thread (almost all internet boards do this).....but actually, the only opinions that matter are from those who are beginners and come to the site. Do they get what they came looking for? Do they get the help they seek and the answers to their questions? I bet the answer is a resounding yes. The rest is just noise....sometimes is enjoyable, sometimes it's grating.....kinda like AM radio. Edited by Left Brain 2014-07-28 7:33 PM |
