Total Time = 3h 24m 25s
Overall Rank = 130/139
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 8/8
Pre-race routine:

Picked up my brother, JP and we drove from Ottawa to Brockville in the pouring rain. The rain let up about half way there though and we thought it would be a dry race. Still we were delayed enough because of the weather that we had to scramble to make it on time.
Event warmup:

Tried to go to the port-a-potty but the line was too long and we had about a minute to go!
Swim
  • 43m 59s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was one of my worst swimming performances in any triathlon. I felt that I was not moving at all. Also, because I could not get to the port-a-potty I REALLY had to GO!!! I simply could not do that while swimming ... so I stopped and .....
What would you do differently?:

Join a swim team and learn the technique all over again. Also, train more in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 04m 7s
Comments:

By the time I left the water, it was raining. Got back to my bike it had been pushed aside by a late arriving contestant in the try-a-tri event. I could not find my glasses nor my bib! After a few minutes of looking, I took off without them.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 21s
  • 40 kms
  • 28.45 km/hr
Comments:

Started out okay. The odometer was working for about a minute and gave out! I had trouble again with my front derailleur ... and I just got it adjusted the week before! I had to leave it in the big gear in the front, which was a pain in those long uphills. I also got a FLAT at the 20km turnaround point!! Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!! Fixed it and was on my way but I just felt that I was moving too slowly after that.
What would you do differently?:

- Have my brother JP tune my front derailleur. He is a better bike mechanic than most of the twits in the bike shops around here.
- Buy a new odometer.
Transition 2
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

Transition is about par. It takes me a fair amount of time because of the distance that I have to cover on foot and I cannot run in my cycling shoes.
What would you do differently?:

I MUST learn to start the bike segment with my shoes already attached to the pedals.
Run
  • 1h 09m 26s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 56s  min/km
Comments:

It stopped raining by the time I started the run segment. I started out slowly so as not to cramp up. I did well until I got to the first turanround that has a short but very steep hill to negotiate. I ran down it and almost crashed!!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. The run segment was my best event in this triathlon.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Full bladder in the swim segment ... flat in the bike segment

heheheh  gues for the swim, you might want to add "learn to pee while swimming, like a real triathlete"

Sorry about the bike problem.  But you still did great.  And great job on the run!

Great race Michael....   you are being too hard on yourself... I think you did great...   Flats are part of the game....  and the derailer... what is going on with that one huh?  Great race....I wish I could do some of those this season, but it does not seem like it...

Congratulations...

cheers

Congratulations, mon ami! We are the Olympians once again!

I wondered why you guys were so late! You should have peed on the train or under the tunnel....

I think there was a current or something (or was that you peeing ) because my swim time was slower than last years which doesn't make sense

I didn't know you flatted! In the rain at that....bleeech!

You looked good on the run...glad it felt as good as it looked

Nice race time even with everything going on. I felt bad for the two people slower than me and everyone in the sprint and T-a-T, because I was warming up the river the whole way through the second loop The key is to just relax... Great to meet you and JP! And thanks again for having them keep the finish line together until I was done.

It's funny that you said that Route 2 had a rough road surface. You must have nice roads in Ottawa, because Route was smooth as babybutt compared to the sinkhole laden swiss cheese that we call roads here in P'Tucky

I agree, you are to hard on yourself.  It sounds like a great race!  I'm just sorry that you also had to ride in the rain.
