Age Group Rank = 6/162
Pre-race routine:

Standard stuff: got up, walked the dog, drove to the race.
Event warmup:

Ran a super duper easy mile from where I parked my car to the race site.
Run
  • 52m 29s
  • 6.2 miles

Comments:

There were over 3000 runners running on narrow, very often bricked, streets. Needless to say, it was really crowded! The first couple of miles were spent just trying to find some running room and getting around those that had put themselves too far in front. Even when things thinned out, it was crowded and I still had to squeeze by people at mile 5.5!!

After I found some room, I tried to pace off others. The weather was really playing havoc with me as it was stupid hot and humid. It seems we have skipped spring and gone right into summer and I have not acclimated to it yet. So, my effort level seemed much higher than my pace indicates. Every time i got my mile interval I was surprised by the number -and not in a good way :) Still I managed to keep a steady pace throughout the race. So, yay!

At about the 4.5 mile mark there is a "hill" and as I ran up I watched a woman pass me. This was discouraging as she runs in the pace group I ran in before my injury and I used to be faster than she. I resolved to try to keep her in my sights and within a short period was able to pass her. This must have rattled her, cuz she picked up the pace and passed me back! I stayed on her heels until the last half mile when she was able to pick things up some more and I could not hang.

What would you do differently?:

nothing really.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water and walked back to the car.

Event comments:

I can't be too discouraged with the result as it was within 17 seconds of last year's time. This year's effort felt harder for some reason -I'm guessing my endurance is not at the same place and the weather was worse.

Way to go, Hands!!  Finding some running room in a race like that is tough. Good job catching the woman from your pace group, then sticking with her to the end.  Even though it felt harder, you did an awesome job, which bodes well for the rest of the season.  Keep up the good work!!

All things considered, 17s off shouldn't get you down. All year to work back to it

And I hear you on the weather! Pollen, heat, and wind. Spring where?

Great job on the race.  Sounds tough with all the crowding, the heat, and that hill.

Despite your slight discouragement, it sounds like you put down a great time at the race, especially considering the down time for your rehabbing.  Nice job dueling it out with the pace group lady, sorry she ended up passing you for good eventually.  Spring events are tough with sudden weather changes and conditions.  Great job, really!! 6/162 AG is nothing to sneeze at! (groaner of a spring-related joke mixed with genuine praise/congratulations )

Being within 17 seconds with all that crowding! Sounds to me like you are making great progress and will be better than you were very soon. Great job!

Seems to me that if you are dissapointed with those great times, and 6/162 you are in a great place!!!!

Congrats on a great race in spite of the heat and humidity.
