Even though I was born in the US and 34 years old, I have never voted nor do I want to.

So, come on guys, who else doesn't vote?

I, too, vote so I can loudly offer my difference of opinion.

When our oldest son was able to vote just so "I can *****". Our middle son will vote when he's of age because he thinks its the right thing to do. Guess I did something right with the boys (I guess McFuzz has something to do with that as well )

I vote but didn't for a while.  I had gotten fed up and felt like voting didn't really matter.  You see a few years ago, an issue on a ballot passed, and the federal government came in and overturned it, saying federal law supersedes state law.  It was something that my partner was very involved with and it stung deeply.  He still will not vote.

Mac's right on.

My pet peeve is that the courts are too frequently overturning issues that voters have passed. That should not be allowed.

BOTH political parties are guilty of such lawsuits.

We may not like it, but it's well within their rights to strike down unconstitutional laws regardless of how many people are in favor of it.  The great thing about this country is that if we don't like that, we can try to amend our Constitution.

The problem I see with that philosophy is that the US is a very big country and what works for some states is not going to work for all states.  or counties or cities.  Each has different needs.  To over turn something on a federal level is difficult if it concerns a local issue.

The problem is that it's not a philosophy.  It's the law.  The good thing and the bad thing about the law is that it's very cut and dry in most cases.  The courts have a legal right to do what they're doing, and we have a legal right to attempt to change that.

I agree with your sentiment about local vs. federal issues though.

I've never voted either, I have no interest in it. I don't even vote on coj polls (well maybe once or twice) Politics don't interest me at the national or local level and I don't follow them.

I agree too.  The courts have the right...and honestly, I wouldn't want to live with any other system.  On a whole, it protects us, sometimes protecting us from ourselves, but it is difficult on that rare occasion that the federal law is prohibiting something that could benefit the lives of others.  All in all, I think that this is the exception and not the rule.  What I think could have stopped the animosity that many felt, was for it to be yanked from the ballot (not ballet like I just typed, good thing I caught it) before ever going to a vote.  I am sure there is a reason this doesn't and didn't happen.

I am a voter - missed one since I turned 18.  I liked going to the polls, seeing my neighbors out,  participating.

Question for those who do not vote - did your parents not vote or discuss current events?  Where does this apathy come from?

We get the government we deserve.

I vote now, but I didnt until I became a little more educated. THe first time or two after I turned 18 that I could vote, I didnt feel I knew enough about politics, the world, or the candidates to make a informed decision,. So i didnt. I did last election though and will continue to make myself aware...

Not voting is as much a right as voting.  Soldiers don't fight and die so you can vote, they do it so you have the ability and right to participate if you wish to do so.  I don't agree with those that don't vote...I don't have to.  A minority of each party's radicalized nutjobs have more and more say when the "average" American doesn't vote.

I agree with the idea that just as you have the right to vote, you also have the right to NOT vote.

But why wouldn't you want to vote? Do you have any idea how many of your daily issues are directly affected by who is put in office?

Taxes, insurance, your kids' education, local issues... ON AND ON

What you're doing by NOT voting is letting everyone else decide those issues for you. Don't you want to have a say on things that directly affect you? I do.

I vote in all the major elections but I usually miss the primaries and smaller ones.  When I was in college I even did the mail in vote - I didn't want to miss one.  I do get a little annoyed when I wait in a LONG, hot line , last time while very pregnant, to vote for the person I think should win and he never does.  That's the problem with a Masshole living in Florida.

I vote in all the major elections, and try to get to most of the local/primaries, etc.  The local ones seem to be the more heated battles since there are direct immediate impacts to the local development, taxes, schools, etc. that impact my day to day life.

Sure, there are quirks in the system, but it works most of the time and the courts do protect us from idiot voters that don't understand my needs ourselves

(Note = NOT equating you to the CSA....) Interesting, that's the very same argument the Confederated States of America made in the 1860s.

I agree that the federal government should not be involved in legislating local matters (i.e., crimes against the person, abortion, etc....), but also that states should not be able to legislate matters of federal concern (i.e., immigration, international trade, etc.....)

As for the courts overturning legislation, that is EXACTLY what the system is designed for.  You wouldn't want legislators and voters being the last word on constitutionality or validity, would you?  It's especially true in Article III federal courts, where the judges are not required to pander to a constituency.

As for voting, do or do not.  We have become pretty blase about that right, that as others have mentioned many peopl ein other countries have died for.  If you don't thoug, no bitchin and moanin.  But why not?  It's so easy.  You can even vote absentee on the comfort of your barcalounger....

The reason I don't vote is that I have the belief that everything will balance itself out in this country. Our political and legal system is built that way. That my vote doesn't really matter in the bigger picture. It may matter at the specific moment that I vote for that governor or bill, but ultimately in the long run, it won't. If the outcome of the bill is so repugnant, people will vote or protest or overturn it. Hence, the balance I'm talking about. If it's not so repugnant and the majority supports it, i'll ride the wave with them. But there's no reason for me to vote because this balancing will occur without me, whether I vote or not.

While all of what you say is probably true on the individual level, a problem arises when lots of people hold similar beliefs.  Is your individual vote likely to change the results of an election?  No, but if a quarter of the eligible voters all feel that same way, there will certainly be elections affected.

Plus I'm not willing to let other people decide things for me when I have a say so.  People fought and died for me to have that right, so I'm going to exercise it.
