Subject: As if the world doesn't hate the US enough as it is.

Today, the International Olympic Committee announced that the swimming finals at the '08 Olympics in Beijing will be held in the morning, local time. NBC requested the change from the traditional evening finals so that it could show the swimming finals live, in the evening, in the US. Hooray U S and A!

So, because American television wants to increase its ratings, they turn an entire sport on its ear. Here are a couple of representative quotes on the decision (from swiminfo.com)

David Sparkes, British Swimming Chief Executive:
We're very disappointed - it's clearly a decision the IOC may come to regret. It's clearly one the IOC may come to regret in time. However, I'm sure that Britain's athletes will respond to the challenge as will all swimmers worldwide. I now look forward to sharing British success in 2008 with the British public over their breakfast cereals.

Alan Thompson, Australian Head Coach:
The only thing that gets me cranky is that (the IOC) have made the decision for commercial reasons, not for the good of the sport.

Hein Verbruggen, Head of IOC's Coordination Commission:
One speaks of one or two sports, but in the end it's about 28 sports. Such a schedule is a matter of discussion with the host country, the broadcasters and the federations. ... What comes out of it is a compromise.

Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming Executive Director:
This is a great opportunity for our sport to be showcased to the North American television audience during the first nine days of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The live prime time exposure is something that can only benefit the sport of swimming, and enhance the public profile of our sport's top athletes. The IOC's decision to announce this nearly two years prior to the Olympic Games ensures a level playing field for all athletes. No matter what the schedule, our athletes will be ready to swim their best when their best is needed.

Why does the rest of the world not want the event to be held in the morning Beijing time? Or is it money with them as well and they want the events to be held at the time of their evening coverage?

What's the big deal? It's not like swimming is a real sport or anything more than a nuisance I have to go through to get on my bike.

Those OTHER countries are probably just being selfish so they can show the swim finals when THEY WANT at THEIR LOCAL TIME.   Dam selfish countries.

Ok, I didn't know if it was something along the lines of swimmers perform better in the afternoon. Was trying to give the other countries the benefit of the doubt, but if they want it in their prime time, then let the highest bidder win. I don't see anything wrong with it...everything is driven by money.

The swimmers will probably be mad because now that can’t stay up all night getting their “International Nookie Card” punched the night before finals.

There's a couple of issues:

  • Swimming has for eons run on a morning preliminaries/evening finals program. Swimmers like it because (especially for the best athletes at a given event), the morning swims are tune-ups for the evening finals. And most swimmers just swim faster in the evening. It forces all of the competitions that lead up to the Olympics to change their scheudles so that swimmers can get used to the Olympic format. Hundreds of meets worldwide will be affected.
  • By changing the schedule for US television, it does so at the expense of the rest of the world. The US gets to watch live coverage at 9pmEST, while Londoners are still at work at 2pm or Sydneysiders are getting ready for lunch at 11am.

So, the bottom line is that it puts US television coverage ahead of the needs of the athletes and the wants of fans in the rest of the world.

You type that as if the US televions networks are being selfish or something.

So the networks are just all about THEM THEM THEM.   Kinda reminds of [a thought I'd get beat down for]

Point 1: I'll buy that. Exactly what I was wondering. Ok, sounds selfish on the part of Amercan media (but are you shocked?)

Point 2: Then see my above post. Its about money and if England and Austrailia weren't willling to shell out the coin to win the rights, then there's nothing to complain about.

Thanks for clearing up the swim schedules, I didn't know how that worked.

I love broad generalizations.

So the world is going to hate the US and all its citizens because they moved one event? Apparently, you feel the international community as a whole is unable to distinguish between the decisions of the IOC, and between an American company and the American people.

Is that your feeling?

OK...i'll narrow it down a bit:

Swimmers and swimming fans will hate us.

But, realize that the IOC made it's decision solely based on the request of NBC. I've been following this issue for months since it was first proposed, and I haven't heard one swimmer (of any country) or coach who thinks this is a good idea.

Yeah, I can just see the marches in the streets of Gaza and Tehran as they burn American flag speedos.

Far as I can tell, the US didn't do anything.  Although, I guess Cheney must've turned away from his "gas up/gas down" button long enough to intimidate the IOC.

Yeah, only some uptight Brit swimmers got their panties in a wad.  Does the east coast hate the west coast because they play MNF in prime time?

Jim can turn any post into a US bash.  It's really a talent

Hey...I love my country. I just wish it would stop being such an all-important bully.

And I realize that the US government isn't behind this. I never said that it was. American television is. But it's about how the world perceives it.

Think of it like this: what if NBC convinced the WCT to make Kona a 2 hour event, so that it could show it live, in its entirety?

Well, I understand that. But, the title and your initial statement can be construed as being inflammatory.

But beyond that....Sucks to be a swimmer, I guess. And maybe it's a bad decision. But, as an athlete, I think that they should be prepared to compete regardless of the timing. And it's not like it's the day before. Making the decision now gives them some chance to train for it properly.

My opinion.....And nothing against anyone here, but... Regardless of the reason, the fact is that they moved the times around. Suck it up and deal.

Then why the title, Hates the US, vs. the apparently more accurate Hates the US Media.

As for NBC and the WTC, not sure I see any comparison or your point.

Well, the athletes and coaches will deal. But it's going to be a huge pain in the @ss. Every major swimming event from now until the Beijing games will have to alter their format so that the swimmers get used to swimming the Olympic program.

So, for instance, the US Olympic trials are a week long. During the week, finals will be swum in the morning in front of empty bleachers because people will be at work or school. The atmosphere will suck.
