I have looked at my rollers and they didn't want to talk so I closed the door and haven't seen them lately. I am running the treadmill but don't fancy running in anything under 50 degrees (wimpy). On the swimming front, it looks like I'll join a Masters group that is local, but it's gonna be painful. They start at Oh so dark in the morning.... |

I ride outside on the weekends whenever possible..today it was 40 and windy when I started. I run in the dark or during my lunch hour never on the treadmill...yawn boring!! Swim, I have my workouts and do them same time all year long...Friday and Sunday nights and another evening depends but mostly Tuesdays. What I really miss is riding outside as it gets dark here now at 4:35pm...so after work is out. I bring my bike to work once a week and ride a hilly 12 mile loop at lunch since it is cold I don't need a shower & can ride longer and just wash my hair quick in the sink....total time away from my desk 58 minutes. With my new power meter, trainer rides are fun to see what I can do and my kids sit and talk with me and help me (get me more water, kleenex, adjust the fan & TV) so it is fun. Off season is the time when we can improve the most, so I try and use that time to my benefit and get faster and improve technique in my weaknesses...running & swimming. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i still run outside - just earlier so i can run in the forrest... monday i don't get out of school until 4pm so it's almost dark when i get home so i have to run in the streets... i don't mind bad weather - there's good clothing out there so it's no big deal... swimming is not an issue as our pool opens at 4:30am - so i can get my swims in before school - like in the summer... biking definitely is an issue... i have a hard time getting used to the trainer... so i shift my workouts every once in a while when there is a nice day... but the nice days will be over soon... snow and such... mountainbiking in the snow is an alternative and i rather do that than a trainer ride... |

I can't run on a treadmill it makes me physicly ill. Every once in a while I add in a trainer ride or swim when I have extra time (which doesn't really exist right now). |

Seriously, I know the temp in the pool is the same all year round but I have THE hardest time going to the pool early in the morning when it is freezing outside. I don't know what it is but it drives me nuts. I'd rather run in a blizzard than swim at 5am when it is 20 degrees outside. |

High-vis vest. gloves hat or headband Swimming hasn't changed much (although most of my swims are evening now, with the different pool) Biking? Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It doesn't get cold enough in GA for me to stop running outside. In fact, it has to be below 30 degrees anywhere to get me to put something over my shorts. Running in the cold, dark morning, I just make sure that I warm up more and wear something reflective. Biggest challenge is biking. I've relegated myself to 2 workouts on an indoor machine during the week and a Saturday morning long ride. I second the bundling requirements posted above, although I do find that some wrap-around earmuffs do work with my helmet. |

I run on a treadmill unless it is about 50F then I go outside. I ride the stationary bike at the gym and do spin classes. (though i am getting pretty tired of the stationary bike). I am going to go mountain biking today during my lunch hour. It is about 45F today and I hope that because I wont be going as fast, I wont freeze my butt off. Swimming is done at the gym, usually at night. THe gyms pool is kind of cold though. I cant wait for spring. Josh |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a big wuss too. I don't want to run in the dark and the cold. It has to be around 50 degrees for me to go run outside. I also hate getting the pool when it's cold out. It's a complete mental thing. So, I've been running on the treadmill during the week and riding on the bike trainer and doing weights. I can't swim right now because I broke my finger and had to have surgery and I can't get it wet. I want to go to spin classes, but they are so early in the morning. I'd have to get up at 4:30 to get there in time and that's not going to happen, so after Thanksgiving I'll probably start trying to do one a week in the evenings. I gotta pick up my workouts though because I am also starting to get soft, and that is not an option. Things get a little harder when your finger is broken though. Running is the best option I have right now. |

It probably has something to do with last year's Dec. swim challenge. What's getting me is running when it's dark, especially since the temp. seems to drop pretty quickly. The trainer's not bad. I actually enjoy doing something besides sitting on the couch when I'm watching TV! |

I'm new to this and may change my tune as winter gets colder, but so far running in 30+ temps still allow me to break a sweat. I try to cover most skin surface (long pants, stretch gloves), but take off my ear covers quickly (unless running across the river, which can be windy) and usually tie my jacket around my waist after the first half mile. It's hard to get started, but really quite pleasant once you're warmed up. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After the time change, I decided to start bike-commuting to work on occasion. It's about 46 miles round trip, with the ride consisting of mostly uphill climb for the first 1/2-2/3 of the way. The only main downside is that it's very dark for most of the ride home. So, just this weekend, I invested in a serious light. I plan to continue my Saturday rides all year, which end up about the same length. I haven't hit serious cold, so we'll see if I weenie out when it gets there. So far, I've continued running in the mornings before work and have been doing less-frequent interval sessions on the treadmill. Winter is where swimming is King. I'm committed to getting into the pool more consistently and really making some improvement. Incidentally, I'm in Masters too. I think you'll love it. I made a good deal of progress in my first few sessions. |
