Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant I had the same thougths at a recent party I attended. Balloons and cookies should be enough entertainment! The gift bags for each kid seemed over the top to me. But from the kid point of view, what a bargain! |

Elite 3201 South Florida | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant Some parents spend more ont he gift bags than what I spent on the gift for the birthday present! On the other hand, we did get little gift bags when I was little at some parties. I just did gift bags for Katie's party yesterday, they weren't too bad... - homemade heart cookie and 4 cookie - homemade "magic wand" pretzel stick (dipped in white chocolate and covered in sprinkles) - princess stikers - princess pen - chocolate gold coins - little kalidascope thingies Boys bags were similar but with a pirate theme. I think they cost me about $3 or 4 each. |

Expert 902 Wylie, TX | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant #1) I can't remember the last time I heard the word "Treflan" used in a conversation #2) The kid's birthday party is just as much about the Moms trying to outdo each other. My wife is the Queen of trying to outdo the other Moms. And it whips my $ss to all holy h$ll. |

Elite 3067 Cheesehead, WI | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant Woaaaa! I have a kid that will turn 4 in March. He's already been to a couple of 'themed'bdays at local museums, child activity places. I'm FREAKED out! I looked into a Chuck E Cheese bday and it runs at minimum 10.99 per person (xtra for goodies and cake)!!! So by the time it's all over and done with it would probably be 200 bucks for a 4 year olds birthday that won't be remembered beyond April! GEEEEEZZZ I refuse to play 'one up man' stuff but don't want to emotionally scar a kid either. 4 is too young I feel so maybe in a couple of years we'll do the bigger deals. Sad thing is the kids that would be invited are from his day care and I really don't know them or their parents....odd world vs. when I was a kid and pin the tail on the donkey, cake and noise makers were all we needed and all the kids were from the neighborhood. maybe we'll spring for a 'blow it up air' place where the kids run rampant on blown up slides, moon walk places etc... and I'll take the advice to send the kids home with sugar and noise. (actually, I bought one of those bull horn things at a local drug store last year... I had more fun with it than my kid!) |

Master 1275 Sonoma County, CA | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant spokes - 2007-01-21 12:47 AM It is quite weird shopping with X2 and the children at the same time. For one thing, it sort of cuts down on me getting checked out by the 3.17 hotties to 100 notties ratio that are in Wal-Fart at any given time. Ummm, yeah, your first mistake is even shopping at Wal-Mart....ugh. The place stinks like carmel corn, is filthy dirty and is filled with the dregs of society that go batsh*t over 24 rolls of tp, the latest Lord off the Rings DVD and really believe that necklace is 14 karat gold as they load their cart at the "Walmart SUPERSTORE' with every processed food package IN BULK their cart can hold including industrial size Corn Puffs, box of 48 corndogs, 106 ounce ketchup, "50% more!" boxes of Fruit Gushers (which is considered a fruit, of course) 8 liters of soda (on sale!) wiith flavors like orange, grape and watermelon and enough starch products to keep a laundry in business for years. And don't forget the 'Family Size' Stouffers lasagna, 2-pack of 'cheese-in-a-can', three half-gallons of rocky road, mint chip and cookie dough ice cream (again...ON SALE!). Personal favorites are the 15 Lean Cuisine frozen dinners (no, just b/c they're low fat doesn't mean you can eat 3 of them in one sitting), box of entemann's donuts (gotta send the kids to school with breakfast) and four bags of Tostitos...with cheese dip for a nice after-school snack. I wonder why we have an obesity epidemic in kids? Hmmmmmmmmm. Most of which probably have never had a tomato that didn't come in a can, an apple that wasn't sauced and cheese which either started out powdered or in a can. Gee, i wonder. |

sigh. sorry. i'm not a fan of wal-mart (nooooo, REALLLLY?) just tired of seeing kids being set up for a lifetime of bad choices with parents who can't look past their incredibly poor eating habits and health problems to see what they're doing to them. the movie supersize me didn't make me mad at mcdonald's...it made me mad at us, consumers, who buy into it all. |

Haha! Good luck with that. BTW, I'm not laughing 'cause your post was funny. More because I think you're delusional if you think you can escape the gift-bag hell. A couple of months ago we had our daughter's 2nd birthday and my wife went to town at the local Party Supply store making up 20 gift bags full of stuff. I swear, just the bags alone must have cost us close to $150. Damn!!!

Their slogan "Because we believe everyone deserves a good meal." Of course... everyone deserves a good meal, not an excuse to pig out, rationalizing away any sense of good nutrition.... but I believe we might be hijacking this thread if we continue... Champion 6285 Beautiful Sonoma County | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant WTH is a "gift bag?" When we were kids, the birthday kid got the presents. The other kids (guests) got ice cream and cake and a party. Are we raising hobbits here? Or is it a matter that the little kids can't handle the fact that they're not the center of attention at SOMEONE ELSE'S party? Please, enlighten me. I'm really confused. Plus, growing up, my birthday parties were pretty much family-only. Fortunately, we lived in the same town as many of my cousins, so it was always a fun time. I didn't start having friends-parties until I was in the 4th grade or so. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Children's Birthday Parties: "Gift Bags" Rant Not to continue to hijack (okay, I'm continuing the hijack), but are the obesity issues of our society really Wal Mart's fault? I think the blame rests solely on the parents who choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Just because Walmart puts it on their shelves doesn't maen people are forced to buy it. If the market is there, can you really fault Wal Mart? Also, why the slam on people buying a 24-pack of toilet paper on sale? I'm not sure what's wrong with that. Edit: My birthday parties were at McDonalds. $1.99 per kid for a happy meal, free room rental and a playground to boot. Edited by lisac957 2007-01-22 1:15 PM |
