Extreme Veteran 364 Luray, Virginia | Subject: Your opinion on sunscreen Last year I was very dutifull in applying sunscreen every day 2-3 times. This was a pain in the arse, and I think I would almost as soon have skin cancer than go through the trouble and money to apply this much sunscreen again. I have had my doubts about sunscreen. As with any product I am told I need, I wonder what did people do 100+ years ago when said product did not exist. Exactly when did cancer appear anyways? Today I stumbled on some articles claiming sunscreen is harmful: http://www.newstarget.com/020237.html http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_1889.cfm There are plenty more on google... I do realize that, according to who you listen to, someone will say everything in existence is good/bad. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

Master 3019 West Jordan, UT | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen When I wear sunscreen my skin does not burn, hurt like a SOB, and peel. I think that is a good indicator of it's effectiveness. Before sunscreen people wore hats and long sleeves to work outside. Also before 50 years ago, you would just die of cancer complications without knowing you had cancer. Without biopsies and x-rays, etc. How would you even know you had it? Plus 100 years ago life expectancy was around 60, now it is pushing 80. If you hate putting on sunscreen, just put it on when you do stuff in the sun. You don't need it all day everyday. 5 mins to put on sunscreen is worth it to me.

The way I see it is that if I'm going to burn, I shouldn't be out in it that long anyway. I tend to tan very easily, and have burned maybe a total of 5 times in my life... Who knows, I may end up being the Fred Hutchinson poster child some day though... |

During the warm half of the year, I stay outdoors most of the day. Sunscreen has been proven to only last around an hour. And chemicals in sunscreen can apparently cause cancer. Regular 83 Kaneohe,Hawaii | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen Aloha, Please use sunscreen. Even if it's a pain in the arse. I just went through a pre-cancerous(sp) treatment on my bottom lip and it totally sucked. Imagine if you can, having you entire bottom lip an oozing, bleeding scab for about 5-6 weeks. I have some pictures I'll be glad to PM you if you need any more motivation. It's hard to eat, drink, sleep, talk, go out in public, train, etc. It sucked. And it was only on my bottom lip and it was pre-cancerous. Years of surfing, going to the beach and being an outdoors person took it's toll. I am pretty young(in my mind) 42.

I have had my doubts about sunscreen. As with any product I am told I need, I wonder what did people do 100+ years ago when said product did not exist. Exactly when did cancer appear anyways? Anyone have any thoughts on this? I watched my best friend die from malignant melanoma last summer. He had a horrible, painful and untimely death (47 YO) from metastatic brain tumors. There is no way you could witness his experience and conclude that you "would almost as soon have skin cancer than go through the trouble and money to apply this much sunscreen." 100+ years ago, environmental conditions were different - there is a lot more UV light now than there was then. Also, life expectancy was a lot shorter due to infectious disease and other factors. Understanding and diagnosis of disease was limited as well. So people were less likely to get it, or if they did, it was likely to be given some goofy name when "diagnosed." Cancer is bad, bad stuff. Edited by billcobit 2007-03-18 6:03 AM |

Champion 5807 Henderson NV | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen I am pretty diligent about putting sunscreen on 3 times a day. I do pest control and I either have my arm out the window or am out doors walking around. Starting about 26-27 years ago I started breaking out with itchy hives if I don't wear sunscreen (I promise they keep me awake). I am missing a chunk of the top of my left ear because I missed a spot, got burnt.ouch!! I use minimum SPF 30 and still tan quite nicely though.
Bottom line: USE SUNSCREEN!!! |

Elite 3687 | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen I always hated putting on the slimey crap and thought it was a pain too. I found a sunscreen called Bullfrog. Completely greasless and goes on easy. Seems like it completely evaporates and would be worthless, but it works great. I wear it in the carribean sun for 5 hour boat dives and it has never let me down. |

Elite 3020 Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen I burn easily in the sun - and wearing sunscreen is worth it to me just for the fact that I don't have to go through the pain of sunburn. Let alone the fact that I don't want to get skin cancer. I use spray-on sunscreen as I can't feel it, and that's the biggest drawback of sunscreen to me. Kinesys ROCKS. And dude, stop trying justify not wearing it w/ internet stories that basically say that once it wears off you need to reapply it. Duh. And - you put two links and they are to the SAME article? What's up with that? |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen USE SUNBLOCK. i really like bullfrog gel for me, and waterbabies or alba botanical for them. my children are so fair that they WILL burn, which causes damage. my husband also burns quite easily. we use the sublocks nearly every day spring to fall. we also have some solarweave clothing for the kids. there are wicking shirts made with spf in the fabric, or you can buy it to wash your clothes in so that you don't have to put sunscreen all over your body. cotton shirts don't block all uva/uvb rays. |

This one study that suggests that maybe sunscreen can possibly cause cancer under some circumstances, but more research is needed before they can draw conclusions? Or the consensus among the medical community that sunscreen is an effective tool against skin cancer? Science is a process. Medical consensus is based on years of proven research. One study does not a consensus break; one study can prove just about anything, esp if the right people are paying for it. It's definitely something to be aware of, but until they're sure it does more harm than good, I'm wearing sunscreen (when I can remember, that is). |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Your opinion on sunscreen I have vitiligo, which means I burn like a newborn baby. Not a delicate pink sunburn, I'm talking blistering ouchy nasty burn, just from taking a walk. I've worn harcore sunscreen every single day of my life since I was diagnosed when I was two. I also was a little skeptical of the chemicals. You know what I did? I bought a sunscreen without chemicals. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are much better sunblocks anyway, and they make them now so you don't have to sport the white nose of your lifeguarding youth. Sunscreen costs money, its a pain to put on every day, and it rubs off and washes away. Then again, after a lifetime of putting on the stuff, my face seems to have stopped aging. Oh, and that whole not burning to death thing is great. Stop reading random articles. Read medical journals and scientific articles, the boring kind with lots of little numbers at the end of the sentences. Then question those, too. Then put on your sunscreen and go for a ride. |

And use the stuff you spray on, so it's easy to apply multiple times. You can even get travel sized containers of sunblock. Fits in a cycling jersey very easily. |
