Subject: RE: Century on SCT July 4th Weekend?Itrithere4iam - 2007-05-15 7:23 AM Never done that distance before. How is it riding that far after eating? I'd vote for the "Floyd to 13 past Frankie's" route and eat on the way back. A Century on the Comet is probably pretty easy, relatively speaking. I did my one and only last November (in Rutledge) and it wasn't bad. It was cold (30's) at the start and we had pretty nasty head/cross winds the entire day, but it worked out. Having a good base in place is critical to completing any ride of significant distance and decent nutrition during the ride plays an equally vital role. FWIW, prior to my Century, I'd done quite a few 50-75 mile rides, but nothing longer. So, if you can get some of those under your belt between now and the 30th, you should be fine. Eating (something reasonable) at Frankie's on the way back would be perfect, because at that point (70+ miles), your body's going to need some significant intake in order to be able to finish strong. This was the thing I learned the hard way during my Century, despite the warning of a good friend. Somehow, me and another rider missed the rest stop at Mile 73 (if they were even there - there were so few Century riders they might've closed up shop)...anyway, we had GU and plenty of liquid, but a banana, an Uncrustable sandwich, anything substantial would've really helped...as it stood, the GU/gatorade was not enough and I bonked at mile 83. I got home OK, but it was hard going. Just my $.02 |
